H Pylori treatment -side effects?

I take omeprazole twice daily. But have severe stomach pain and wind on and off maybe once or twice a week. Doctor things its a peptic ulcer caused by H Pylori and has given me two antibiotics to cure the infection. I don't like the sound of possible side effects especially as I am on statins, have slight heart issue and already suffer symptoms with M.E. and am over 70.
Has anyone ever had this treatment of Amoxycillin and Clarithromycin?
I hate taking all this for something I might not have. Surely it would be better to stop omeprazole for 2 weeks and do a test.

Actually I have just spoken to the doctor and arranged to do the test first. But would be interested to hear how others faired with the antibiotics in case I eventually have to take them.

Omeprazole has a number of side effects, and because it reduces stomach acid (which is there to kill off any bad bugs), these bad bugs can proliferate and cause the symptoms you mention. This sets up a vicious cycle.

I'm an Admin on a closed health group and we have this problem come up frequently.

Thanks Sparklefizz I'll have a look at the link now.

My DH had this bacteria but couldn’t have the two antibiotics due to inflammation. I gave him pure Manuka UMF honey 50+ three times a day on an empty stomach for 3 or 4 months and he definitely improved. Manuka UMF 50+ is known to kill H Pylori and MRSA.

Thanks Shropshirelass. I didn't know that. Sounds good but I'm wondering about effect on blood sugar. Mine is quite high.

Nada I sympathise, I haven’t had HPylori diagnosed but did a self test and it was negative. I had feared it could have been that as I would hate having to take two antibiotics at the same time, as I react to most medication. Also the honey as alternative, I would worry about my borderline sugar level! Still you are right essential that you have a diagnosis before taking two strong antibiotics. Let’s us know how it goes I’m interested.

If you're diabetic, you really should avoid honey of any sort (I'm sure you know that). Infection in itself will have an effect on your blood sugar level.

Just read the link Sparklefizz I have been taking Omep for years. This pain has only started. The article says doctors will check for side effects after one year of taking it. Didn't happen. I'll be stopping it for two weeks from now, so I'll see if it makes a difference.

Sparklefizz Wed 08-Dec-21 12:18:13

Don't stop it quickly nadateturbe but wean yourself off it very slow or you will get withdrawal symptoms.

Oh right! will do! thanks.

Thanks Growstuff. I'm not diabetic but my blood sugar is high according to doctor (45) so I have to limit sugar.

Bluesky that's what I thought. thanks.

I'll post an update at some stage. I hope my stomach copes with food without the omeprazole. Apparently I have to be off it two weeks completely before the test.
Isn't life fun! smile

I was diagnosed with H. Pylori (following blood tests) about 9 years ago and prescribed amoxicillin and clarithromycin together with omeprazole to counteract the effects of the antibiotics (as I recall). After 4 days I developed a rash and swollen face. GP stopped the antibiotics and prescribed a strong antihistamine. it transpired that I have an allergy to certain antibiotics which I wasn't previously aware of. I am surprised the antibiotics were prescribed without tests confirming H. Pylori so pleased to hear tests are being done. I know of at least two other people for whom these two antibiotics have caused no problems at all, Hope it resolved soon for you.

I had H. Pylori and took the two antibiotics with no side effects at all. If I forget or miss omeprazole I have the most awful reflux during the night, or early hours, which wakens me. I never eat later than 7 at night and go to bed around 2 am (or later!) so it isn't late digestion that does it.

Thanks Pixieboots.

GrandmasueUK So you took the antibiotics but still have the problem? Did they not do another test to see if you still had H Pylori?

My son is like that (night reflux if forgets pill). He has been diagnosed with Barretts Aesophagus.
