I did Dry January a few years ago as a charity fundraiser and what I actually did was eat LOADS. This time I am doing for health reasons and have joined Slimming World as well - anyone joining me here for DJ?

Just looked at this and all I got from it was that blue sky let a checkout assistant change her habits. Made me realise that perhaps I am not as silly as I thought when do similar. Do not drink much nor have ever and try to follow my own priorities as each other week seems to have an avalanche of charitable prompts,

Well done Bertha on the weight loss - 12lbs really makes a difference doesn't it.

I've had a dryish January and will continue with that as part of my 'wellness' regime smile

Congratulations BigBertha1.

It's the last day and nearly there. I definitely won't be having an alcohol today and have kept to the SW plan. 12 lbs lost.

I usually do DJ and there is a useful Dry January app you can get which tracks how many calories and £££s you’ve saved. I’m doing it by default this year as I’ve managed to stay dry since last October which is pretty much a first as I certainly used to enjoy a glass or two with a meal or just relaxing. I have lost weight though, now trying to put some back on which isn’t as easy as it sounds.

BigBertha1 I'm doing Dry January too. I do enjoy a drink but don't do so excessively. I've done it in the past successfully and I know it's been beneficial for me - so yes let's support each other all we can ?

I don't drink but I'll have to pull the reins in on smoking as to my mind there's no need nor point in either. Too much lung cancer through smoking and breast cancer with alcohol.

BigBertha1 Thu 30-Dec-21 05:52:15

I just wondered that's all and if anyone else was doing it we could offer each other encouragement/support. I was suggesting anyone should do it just wondered....sorry to have trodden on toes.

I'll seriously consider it. It will help me recover from my birthday celebration.

Kate1949 Wed 29-Dec-21 19:30:11

Nor me.

DillytheGardener Wed 29-Dec-21 19:27:59

I won’t be giving up alcohol in grim ole January, no thank you!

SueDonim Wed 29-Dec-21 19:20:39

We don’t drink enough for dry January to make any difference. We go weeks without drinking any alcohol at all. Mind you, if eschewing a bottle of wine for a month meant I’d lose a stone in weight, I’d do it! grin

Maggiemaybe Wed 29-Dec-21 19:16:01

It's my birthday month, too, kitty and Laura. Here's to all the January babies! wine

Maggiemaybe Wed 29-Dec-21 19:14:12

Is BigBertha1 actually asking for support? From the OP I assumed she was just interested in knowing who's doing Dry January. And presumably why or why not.

Blossoming Wed 29-Dec-21 18:38:10

I don’t think it’s very supportive to try and talk the OP out of it. Cutting out alcoholic drinks is useful for weight loss as it has lots of calories but no nutritional value.

I do enjoy a glass of wine, I just don’t need it like some people do.

AreWeThereYet Wed 29-Dec-21 18:32:20

I don't think the op is suggesting people should - only asking who will be. I don't drink much either so most months are dry for me. We didn't even finish a bottle of wine over Christmas or open the Baileys (my favourite). Before Christmas I threw away half a bottle of Baileys from last year - what a waste ? I'm not anti having a drink now and again, it just never occurs to me to drink most of the time.

LauraNorderr Wed 29-Dec-21 18:31:16

Same here Kitty ? so at least one wet day.

kittylester Wed 29-Dec-21 18:20:57

Not likely! It's my birthday month!! wine

Kali2 Wed 29-Dec-21 18:05:33

We only drink in company- so there is just no need. After all the drinking with family and friends- we will be quite happy to give it a miss quite naturally.

BlueSky Wed 29-Dec-21 18:03:09

I agree Lemon if you don’t have any medical conditions and only drink as per safety guidelines, I can’t see why an older person should deny themselves one of the few pleasures left!

LauraNorderr Wed 29-Dec-21 14:33:58

May I request a bucket of Argy poteen as I have some paint to strip from the shed walls.
Don’t really drink so dry January doesn’t mean much to us.

AGAA4 Wed 29-Dec-21 14:23:57

Poteen doesn't count lemon. It's much stronger than the usual alcohol.

Maggiemaybe Wed 29-Dec-21 14:23:16

Well unlike most posters so far I do enjoy a drink, and no, I won’t be having a dry January. As lemongrove says, why deprive yourself of life’s little pleasures? Especially in one of the most miserable months of the year!

lemongrove Wed 29-Dec-21 14:19:34

Ahem! AGA you have had your head in a bucket of poteen for most of the last few years.tchgrin
