I would just go to A&E. They will check you over thoroughly.

Sorry to ask you Luckygirl but have you been diagnosed by a doctor?

My brother suffers terrible facial neuralgia. Im not sure what if any treatment he gets. Being in that much pain Id try to get appointment with GP or even ask the pharmacist their advice if appointment too far away. I hope you feel better soon.

The morphine patch seems to be improving things. That and avoiding doing anything that makes it worse. The way I am going I will be doing nothing but sitting around!

yes, I have had this and it did eventully clear up...extremely painful........ anti inflammatory pain killers In my case I took Syndol tablets....it is nerve pain...trapped nerve in neck going up into skull. neck massage sometimes helps
I copied and pasted below.

Occipital neuralgia causes intense, shock-like pain in the back of the head, as well as migraine-type symptoms. It's often caused when the occipital nerve, which travels along the neck and up to the base of the skull, becomes trapped.

Luckygirl sorry to hear, you seem to have a lot of pain issues at the moment. As other have said ring 111 to get advice asap.

Luckygirl3 I agree wholeheartedly with NotAGran55. You should seek medical advice. From what you’ve said in your post you are no stranger to pain recently. But this sounds to be on a different level. You have a severe pain at the base of your skull and you can’t self diagnose from Google. Please seek help.

Luckygirl please call 111 as your symptoms sound awful on top of your other issues. Best not to self diagnose when you are in so much pain ?

I’m not able to tell you anything about occipital neuralgia, I’m afraid Luckygirl, but I instantly thought about shingles. When my DH developed shingles a few months ago the pain came a few days before the rash, and it was the worst pain he has ever had. He had to get to see the go very quickly when the rash came, so that he could be prescribed anti virals and pain medication.
I do hope that you’re ok.

In the last few days I have been getting the most dreadful pain in the base of my skull on one side. I have never known pain like it and it makes me weep. I am usually quite stoic with pain and in fact have both a broken foot and a slipped disc at the moment, neither of which are anything like as painful as this. I am on an opiate patch as well and it is not touching this pain.

I have looked it up and it cannot be anything else but occipital neuralgia.

Has anyone else experience of this and can tell me it will go away at some point? I think it may have been triggered by using crutches at the moment.

Any reassurance gratefully received.
