Cutting a long story short I have (at last!!) been given a date for a new hip. It will be my first proper operation so feel relieved and happy but nervous ?, All I was told at the hospital was it would be a 48 hour stay.

I don’t know anyone who has had this done and wonder if anyone with experience has suggestions or advice about what they found helpful either before or after the operation or useful aids, or anything about the whole process.
Thanks ?

Wow that is pricey, but convenient being collapsable as long as it doesn’t collapse when you are using it.
Mine is just an ordinary aluminium one, which does get in the way a bit, it’s hiding in the dining room at present. grin

After I had my ankle pinned and plated I bought a stool for my shower. It is height adjustable and I am sure I bought it from Amazon albeit many moons ago. It was fabulous after my knee replacements and I will be using it forever.

That frame is expensive but if you and DH will get a lot of use out of it- so be it.

After my first knee replacement, I used a perching chair in my bathroom because I could not stand safely for long enough to wash my face etc.

It is in my garden shed with the walking frame and other items I no longer need but may in the future.

I use one walking stick- I have one indoors and the other is permanently in my car for supermarket trips.

My hip aids are mostly in the loft too, just in case, Charleygirl, and also keep a stick in the car boot and the other by the front door.
Am still using the toilet frame which is really helpful when sitting down or standing up either with or without the raised toilet seat. You might find one of those useful Fanny. When you have had the hip or knee too dine, you its tyen that you notice quite how low a toilet actually is.
A question. Has anyone developed swollen feet/ achey lower legs? I havnt had this problem before and have been for a blood test (5 bottles!) now awaiting results. Been looking to buy socks with lucy lastic ...as my usual socks now leave an indent.

I had a sturdy, height adjustable shower stool for my late DH but have found it invaluable in the bathroom to sit on after my shower .
I popped into Tesco today to buy a couple of items and used a basket rather than a trolley , of course I ended up with more than planned and then realised how pathetic I was still . I struggled to get back to my daughter in the car for goodness sake !

silverlining48 Tue 31-May-22 19:04:36

Susie Not pathetic, you are still recovering from major surgery. I wouldnt carry anything heavy. Its enough carrying myself, grin.
Hope you are enjoying your break. We are visiting friends there this weekend.

Charleygirl5 Tue 31-May-22 22:13:25

silverlining I had the same problem but I bought socks for diabetics on Amazon and they are perfect. I have no problem getting them on and off as they are wide. Be careful because some are really narrow.

silverlining48 Tue 31-May-22 22:37:06

Thanks Charleygirl, have had trouble finding any in the usual shops, didn't realise there are special diabetes socks, will have a look.

Silverlining and FannyCornforth, I am sorry that you both ended up on the floor and hope you are recovering well.
Getting up is no joke as I found out when I fainted on the landing floor on my way back from the bathroom during the night, just before Christmas. With my husband’s help I eventually managed to crawl to the top of the staircase and pull myself up.
I had my telephone appointment yesterday with a pre-admission nurse at the hospital, the same nurse I had in February. I did wonder what on earth they could be asking me this time as I have just about answered every question they need an answer to.
The nurse told me that my pre-admission information and tests had all expired and would need to be repeated!
So I had to go through all the medical questions again. I still only sleep with one pillow (strange question, I thought), have never smoked. Why do I feel guilty that I may have had a glass or two of something alcoholic during the week?!
Will be off to the hospital again next week for all the tests all over again.
On a brighter note, we’ll be returning for lunch to the lovely Italian restaurant we found near the hospital last time. I will be in need of pizza and a glass of wine after all the blood they take.

Still waiting for a date for surgery and feeling frustrated.

Oh ipadGrandma what a waste of everyone’s time and energy . My poor friend who can now hardly walk has had THREE pre admission sessions . His wife is tearing her hair out . The first time he actually got into the ward and then suddenly the anaesthetist decided his heart needed more examination / change of meds , then he was found to be anaemic . Now they want his op done in the main district hospital where there is ITU back up . All very reasonable but one department doesn’t seem to be talking to the other.
I’m staying with my brother now having had a very lively few days with my daughter and family . I was pleased to have my Airbnb to retreat to . It’s extremely quiet with brother but very cold and an awful night on a sofa bed which although not uncomfortable it was cold and I couldn’t settle and eventually went to sleep at 2.30 am wearing a jumper over PJ’s and socks !
I had a nice walk though this morning before it poured with rain again .
I ache everywhere except my new hip and have a blanket over me ! It’s 12 C here in Norfolk .?

silverlining48 Wed 01-Jun-22 15:00:24

Well I hope things warm up in Norfolk by the weekend. Nothing worse than feeling cold, especially in the night.
I had a short walk today, 5000 steps, but have done much longer walks over the last few weeks.
Hope you get a date soon iPadGrandma. I answered the pillow question with a 3 or 4. There’s not a right answer I suppose, though 4 does seem excessive but I arrange them in a particular way and ..... well, that’s what I do. One is used to support operated leg as am sleeping on my side again.
Really hated the back sleeping.
It’s 7 weeks today since my operation and the first 10 days/2 weeks were awkward but recovery was far quicker than I expected and though there are a few other problems the pain in my hip has gone completely. It is rather wonderful and am so grateful.

Charleygirl5 Wed 01-Jun-22 15:35:26

silverlining in the past I have bought socksology and also ladies extra wide socks for diabetics from Amazon. Both were superb but I marginally preferred the latter because they are slightly thinner so I found them marginally easier to put on.

Long gone are the grooves (indents) above my ankles. They wash well, the dye does not run and they last for ages.

silverlining48 Wed 01-Jun-22 16:10:18

Thankyou I will check these out. I cant use my old socks any more so need to replace with some that are comfortable.

GrannyLaine Fri 03-Jun-22 12:53:26

Hope all you hipsters had some lovely Jubilee celebrations and those of you who have not been feeling so great are on the mend. Silverlining, I hope your swollen foot / feet isn't causing you too much concern: I'd say it's an odd thing at this stage of your recovery and perhaps not connected to your surgery? My leg was swollen, foot to thigh, from about day 4 to day 12 if I'm remembering correctly but I've had nothing since.
iPadGrandma, I do wish they would get a move on for you, I'd be annoyed at all those repeated 'pre-ops' as I'm sure you are. What a waste of your time and theirs.
FannyCornforth how are you doing? not long for you now...

travelsafar Fri 03-Jun-22 13:52:32

I have been out this morning and the pain in my back and hip unbearable. I had to keep finding somewhere to sit in town and at the check out in the supermarket I was bent over the trolley to try and ease my pain. I wanted to ask you 'hipsters'if the back and hip pain both go completely along with the stiffness. I am having op in July, am scared stiff but sooo hopeful this pain will all go and I can walk in comfort once more.

GrannyLaine Fri 03-Jun-22 14:49:04

You have my total sympathy travelsafar, chronic pain is so debilitating isn't it? I can only speak from my own experience but my hip pain went as soon as my hip joint had been replaced. Obviously there was pain from the soft tissues that had been disrupted but that's normal post surgical recovery and it wasn't long before I was pain free altogether. I didn't have back pain but DID have referred pain into my knee which was as bad as the hip pain. That also disappeared immediately. Keep a positive mindset and look forward to a pain free future!

Aveline Fri 03-Jun-22 14:51:44

travelsafar please don't be afraid. I can still remember standing in the shower the day after my hip op and being amazed and so grateful that the old nagging pain had just gone!

travelsafar Fri 03-Jun-22 16:22:01

Thank you for the reassuring messages. smile

silverlining48 Fri 03-Jun-22 17:46:25

The pain does go after the operation travels, don’t worry. Not long to wait now. flowers

Charleygirl5 Fri 03-Jun-22 22:58:45

travelsofar you are experiencing so much pain now I think you may receive a pleasant surprise and discover the immediate pot op pain is not nearly as bad as before.

Please try not to worry- the sooner it is over and done with the better. Keep free from colds and you should be counting the days. You have a pleasant summer ahead of you.

SusieB50 Sat 04-Jun-22 16:06:22

travelsofar you will be so relieved to find that awful grinding pain has gone immediately you start walking - the same day or next morning . There is obviously pain from the surgery but you know that is temporary. I can now walk free from hip pain . Back pain ? Well that’s another story ! Hope it will all get better once I can do my gentle Pilates and water exercises ??

SusieB50 Sun 05-Jun-22 20:38:52

8 weeks tomorrow and I have just walked up the stairs without thinking and only realised when I got to the turn.At last I’m on my way to normality ?

SusieB50 Sun 05-Jun-22 21:28:17

That should read “walked up the stairs normally “!

silverlining48 Sun 05-Jun-22 23:14:27

That’s progress Susie, happy for you ?

Naughtyneine Mon 06-Jun-22 09:09:36

Travelsafar...I know it's hard to believe that the pain really will go that quickly especially when not only is in your hip but down the inside and outside of your thigh and into your knee etc but it does. Yes of course there is still pain and stiffness from the op but each week you realise that it's lessening and from day one that excruciating bone on bone pain is no longer there. It's 6 weeks since my op now and I'm almost back to normal ( my back has played up a bit but that's down to previous surgery and pins in my pelvis) . I can garden...do housework (?)..decorate ...all the things I didn't think I'd ever be able to do the same before the op. Hang on in there and hopefully in a few weeks you'll be posting positive news on here too.

travelsafar Mon 06-Jun-22 11:00:25

Oh wow its wonderful to know I will be able to garden properly once more. The garden is my happy place and I love being outside or in my greenhouse. Thanks so much for that info and really pleased that you are doing so well.?
