Several newspapers today wrote up the results of survey of older women carried out by the University of California.

They took a sample of roughly 5,500 women between 63 - 97, all without heart disease and found, essentially, those in the sample who were on their feet and busy pottering around the house and garden for at least 4 hours a day had a 43.5% lower probability of getting coronary heart disease, 30% lower risk of stroke 62% lower risk of cardiovascular than those who spent less than 2 hours in such activities.

Now I know all statistics like this need to be treated with caution, but at a time when we are told we will die unless we walk, miles, go to the gym etc. This research is saying that just standing up and moving around the house, showering getting dressed etc etc, providing you can manage to do four hours a day in total, not as a continuous activity, can make an enormous difference to your health,

This makes it achievable for people who are not capable of even short walks or exercise classes.

Of course housework is good for you. It involves moving about!

Chatting to a friend relieves stress!

Baggs Mon 14-Mar-22 14:58:09

My mum always said housework was good exercise.

Callistemon21 Mon 14-Mar-22 14:35:06

I was going to clean today as well as do several loads of washing then a friend phoned. We hadn't had a chat for ages and catching up was much nicer than vacuuming.

I hate housework as well. I lie in bed and look at the cobwebs on the beams and turn over and read my book how many steps does that count as?
Do men realise they are missing out on living a long life by letting us pick all their things up off the floor, putting away something that as sat on the worktop for months or asked the question for the umpteenth time "Where's me?" Which we go and look for, for them because we have tidied it away.hmm

Quite reassuring to read Monica, I’d been up for at least 4 hours walking backwards and forwards because at the moment I can only carry one thing at a time, by the the time I sat down at 11pm to take my ten o’clock med.

One of my Grandmothers liked to sit about all day smoking one ciggie after another. She lived till she was 87. Same age almost to the month as her mother, my Gt Grandmother, who was a lively as a cricket, always on the move.

What price surveys, eh!

I hate housework. It certainly isn't good for me mentally. It makes my blood boil.

Horses and dogs keep me active physically though.

Love it, Grandmabatty!

I love housework. I frequently sweep the room I'm in with a glance.

I think housework is good for you it a complete workout well for me it is. I have to keep active because of arthritis if I didn’t my joints would seize up. The only job I don’t do is vacuuming the carpets as it’s too heavy but my husband is happy to do that job.

*Four hours* housework a day ?

It is the standing that is important. Being upright and active.

Callistemon21 Sun 27-Feb-22 21:00:22

The average person would be surprised at how many steps they are doing each day without really trying.

Oh, good!

Just standing up is supposed to use more energy.

By the time I leave for work in the morning, I’ve generally done about 2000 steps, that is just getting ready, tidying up, bringing logs in, nothing out of the ordinary. I aim to do 5000 by lunch time, if I’m lagging behind, I get up and move around a bit more, about 8000 when I finish.
Getting supper, sorting laundry, tidying up, all uses up another 2 to 3 thousand.
I know it’s hardly amazing, but I’m not exercising, just up and down all day.

I hate housework . It gives me back ache and makes me nowty!

The principle of exercise hold true, do what you can manage, it helps a lot with heart disease, diabetes, and weight control. That hold true for men as well as women.

well, if pottering about in 15 minutes bursts is life lengthening, I will live to a 100. Looking for keys is an Olympic standard activity in this house, combine it with wrestling with a duvet cover, 20 minutes ironing (I was cold and it warmed me up), walking down the garden to check on what is happening, but resisting the urge to mow the lawn, now considering washing the car, so that should be me sorted.

travelsafar Sun 27-Feb-22 13:01:02

I've been on the go since 9am, showering and hairwash, fighting with the double duvet when I changed bedding, then I tied up the kitchen, and have just finished giving the car a real good wash and polish. Recovering with a coffee and thinking about getting out in the garden to do some jobs which will involve a lot of getting up and down. Think I will be OK today with the 4 hours of activity!!!smile

Smileless2012 Sun 27-Feb-22 12:27:30

I like it too paddyann, always have. Wouldn't be without the dish washer though.

paddyann54 Sun 27-Feb-22 12:22:07

I like housework .Sorry if that upsets folk but housework doesnt need much thought you can switch off from all your worries and have a clean house a couple of hourslater.Igot rid of my dishwasher decades ago and my friends were horrified,I like washing dishes, its my quiet time I can watch the birds in the trees or the cats chasing the squirrels and not think about the past few months that make me cry if I dwell on them
I have always been this way, organised .busy ,practical.Nothing wrong with liking housework

And I thought it was very interesting and took it on board MOnica. It’s very helpful for people who don’t get out much. Thank you.

Skybubble Sat 26-Feb-22 23:49:53

I always tell myself that I’ve had a work out after cleaning the house because it feels like it!

BlueBelle Thu 24-Feb-22 20:14:09
