I’ve never really smoked, only tried a couple when I was around 13 at school as most do, and luckily never appealed to me thank goodness to carry on. Having been to drs very recently I was asked if I smoked, when I said No never! I should have asked why he asked me, he did the oximeter test it was 98.6 and said that was ok, friend said oh drs very often ask if you drink or smoke if they can’t get you on that, they will get you on your weight! Which did make me chuckle !

Yes. It’s the most awful addiction.
It ploughed loads of cash into the NHS
And all those non smokers are living longer
There is a lot more to it than meets the eye

No, it stinks. If it tastes as bad as it smells I’m amazed anybody does it.

Will anyone be brave enough here to admit to a 40-a-day Players habit??

I smoked one when I was drunk at a hen party in my 20s. I had no idea how to inhale and someone had to give me instructions. I ran to the toilet and threw up. It put me off for life.

It’s just important to have it on your medical record. And also might be used to put up a red flag regarding smoking related illnesses. And important that the NHS knows how many people smoke these days. I with I’d never smoked. Gave up years ago but I’m sure it’s affected my breathing.

I never have but I did give it a go. I used to get butts from the paths and sides of the road when I was about 9 or 10 with a friend. Disgusting when I think about it now.
My two boys socially smoke but I have never seen them do it and I wouldn’t want too.

(Just asking for a friend, y'know!)

My late husband and I both smoked from teenage years.

I remember him going for a BUPA medical with his company, and the doctor said I won't ask if you smoke, because I can smell it on your form! My husband was most embarrassed, but we didn't stop smoking.

Unfortunately his health was very badly affected and he then gave up, too late.

I sometimes smoked menthol cigarettes until I was thirty and having my first child. I never had the desire to smoke again I regret smoking in the first place.

No never, my parents were heavy smokers, it stinks, ashtrays are revolting, and most importantly its unhealthy and toxic.

Shelflife Mon 06-Jun-22 17:59:54

Never ever smoked, although when I was young everyone lit up, the staff room was thick with smoke. Must have been a passive smoker- one parent was a heavy smoker, last few years were not good! I had no intention of ending up in such a distressing condition! Died of a smoking related condition , made a massive impact on me !!

I smoked from the age of about 15 to about 55, obviously something I really regret now but it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do was giving up smoking, I was actually on Nicorette gum for years. I don’t think I could afford to smoke now as I used to smoke at least 20 a day and my cigarettes are about £10 a packet but saying that I would’ve found a way. I am a recovering alcoholic as well but I have to say I found giving up the booze a lot easier than giving up cigarettes..

I used to smoke. Ridiculous for someone with asthma. Gave up in 1976, the long hot summer, a chest infection and important professional exams (people were allowed to smoke in an exam then). Husband smokes small cigars and a pipe. Wish he didn’t.

Definitely agree with you on that one nearly 16 years sober but giving up the cigs has been a no go as yet

I have asthma due to a childhood of passive smoking.

My parents both smoked, and Dad smoked very heavily (100 a day!!!!) Cigarettes were unfiltered in the 1950s. Both parents died of smoking-related illnesses.

Seeing my Dad coughing his heart out every morning was a real turnoff so I've never smoked.

I smoked from age 14 until I was 58. Stopped for both pregnancies, for three years after my second child was born, for five years in my thirties. So sad, it’s been 8 years this time. I doubt I’ll smoke again, but recognise that I’m an addict, so can’t be too dogmatic about that.

Zonne Mon 06-Jun-22 18:10:57

Not so sad, so far. My phone’s auto-correct is annoyingly random.

Shelflife Mon 06-Jun-22 18:14:03

Shinamae, well done ?.

MiniMoon Mon 06-Jun-22 18:23:22

I never wanted to smoke. Friends at school used to ask me to try, but I always declined.
Both my parents smoked, and I was often sent to buy cigarettes for my mother. My Dad gave up when her was in his 40's, but my mother continued until well in to her 50's. She developed COPD in her later years, and blamed it on smoking.

CanadianGran Mon 06-Jun-22 18:29:19

I did from about 18 to about 30. I was quite a heavy smoker, as so many of our crowd was at the time, and took quite a while to finally make up my mind to quit. I have never even thought of starting again because I know how awful it is for health, and how hard it is to stop again.

JaneJudge Mon 06-Jun-22 18:31:14

no and I don't have a massive tv either

Shandy57 Mon 06-Jun-22 18:56:44

Even my daughter crying because children on the school bus mocked her because she 'smelled of smoke' didn't make me give up. It's a terrible addiction, and I do still vape. I remember on holiday being desperate for a 'puff' on my vape before we got back on the train, and a member of the party said I should just drink the fluid! I used to smoke one of the strongest brands, Marlboro.

Kate1949 Mon 06-Jun-22 19:01:17

I've never had a cigarette. When people were smoking at school it never occurred to me to have one. I don't know why. It was nothing to do with health or smell. My husband smoked 40 a day for many years but gave up when they went up in Thatcher's budget one year. He found it very hard.
I am guilty of drinking too much wine on occasion though.
