tiredoldwoman Tue 21-Jun-22 05:57:20

Ladystardust - I was prescribed this last week and it knocked me iller than I was - ga-ga ,sick, dizzy with severe diarrhoea . I wrote on my box too ! Exactly the same as you smile

The one that’s made me ill today is Cefalexin. It will go on the list of antibiotics I can’t tolerate. I can’t take Amoxicillin either.

Grandyma Mon 20-Jun-22 20:29:12

I can’t tolerate it at all. Makes me terribly sick. Trimethoprim does too. I have a uti at the moment and my Gp prescribed a different antibiotic because of my intolerance to the previous ones. I took the first one this afternoon and been vomiting ever since. I just don’t know the answer. I’ll get back to the GP tomorrow.

someone whom i know was advised by an out of hours doc not to take them.
he said might be bad for her chest.
he'd never seen her before, but she is CEV, and i wonder if he was trying to warn her of something.
he said not to quote him about it.
this was just before covid took off, in the january.

That’s interesting Honeysuckle I didn’t know there was a slow release one. Gosh you sound like me.
Are you aware of the CUTIC support group?

Honeysuckleberries Mon 20-Jun-22 20:09:36

There are two types of nitrofurantoin. I have cystitis about 8 times a year and had nausea, stomach cramps, and a horrible smell in my nose when I had to take it. I now take the time release ones and whilst horrible they are actually bearable.

MrsKen33 Mon 20-Jun-22 20:00:55

I’m allergic to it. Hot red rash all over my body on second time of taking it.

Farzanah Mon 20-Jun-22 09:20:59

I have chronic UTIs and have used Nitrofurantoin a few times, it always makes me nauseous, but like all meds it won’t suit everyone.
Most medications has some side effects, it just depends whether the cure is worse than the affliction.
I couldn’t manage my condition without antibiotics, and use cephalexin, but am aware it’s not ideal because antibiotics long term interfere with gut biome.

Sago Mon 20-Jun-22 09:09:13

I took it for a year and other than yellow pee no side effects.

kittylester Mon 20-Jun-22 08:04:28

Trimethoprim always works for me

Chewbacca Sun 19-Jun-22 22:39:03

Yes, I've just finished a course of them and found them to be brutal. Like AuntieFlo I had an angry red rash on both legs that has taken a while to go; and like kittylester they made me really sick and unwell. The side effects were almost as bad as the uti. Won't have them again if I can help it.

LadyStardust Sun 19-Jun-22 22:28:52

I've only had one major UTI in my life and was prescribed Trimethoprim. It made me feel far, far worse than the infection and I have the empty box in my medicine cupboard, written on is, NEVER AGAIN! Good to know there are alternatives if needed in the future!

Whiff Sun 19-Jun-22 22:18:36

Nitrofurantoin or Cefalexin are the only 2 antibiotics that work on me when I have a UTI or kidney infection. Never had any side effects from either.

Mine Sun 19-Jun-22 21:56:32

I'm the opposite can't tolerate Trimethoprim but have no side effects with Nitrofurantoin....I always have that prescribed if I have a UTI...

Missedout Sun 19-Jun-22 21:28:39

I also have a problem with Nitrofurantoin. It's the standby antibiotic for me when I have a UTI and affects me mentally and physically. I get agitated and depressed, my appetite disappears and I have indigestion and diarrhoea.

Sometimes I am prescribed Trimethoprim, I welcome that and have no problems. I suspect that my prescription depends on the results of the hospital laboratory culture. I'm another who is allergic to penicillin so the antibiotic choices are limited.

Floradora9 Sun 19-Jun-22 21:27:20

I felt really ill after being prescribed these. I felt so bad I phone 111 . When I told my GP she told me I had had them before but never again. My DD had the same reaction to them .

Reubenblue Sun 19-Jun-22 21:12:17

I was recently prescribed it and it made me very ill, I am allergic to penicillin so possibly it’s just me and antibiotics. After some research afterwards though it does seem to cause problems for some people.

kittylester Sun 19-Jun-22 20:45:40

It made me dreadfully sick.

Auntieflo Sun 19-Jun-22 19:14:57

I am allergic to Nitrofurantoin.
Brought me out in a rash all down my legs.

Chestnut Sun 19-Jun-22 18:22:38

I've taken it with no problems, but we are all different. If you are having side effects then change to something else.

Sweetpeasue Sun 19-Jun-22 18:19:09

Have had Nitrofurantoin for many UTIs and been on low daily dose for 2 yrs advised by Urologist . No problems with it. Medications may not always suit everyone though.

Georgesgran Sun 19-Jun-22 17:52:15

I do believe it can cause liver problems if that’s why OP is concerned.

Hellogirl1 Sun 19-Jun-22 17:37:10

I`ve been on it for over 7 years, no problems.

Georgesgran Sun 19-Jun-22 17:36:20

It’s the only antibiotic that works for DD2’s repeated kidney/bladder infections.
Why are you asking?

Hithere Sun 19-Jun-22 17:35:19

I am familiar with it. No issues at all
