Hello! ?
Welcome to ? 2!

A huge thank you and well done to Silverlining thanks for creating the first thread (which I’ll link to shortly)
It was an amazingly successful thread; which was remarkable considering that most of the time it was invisible! smile

ipadGrandma I would like to alay your fears I was the same as you right up to sitting in the ward waiting to go down for my op. Was I doing the right thing. I was terrified. But I am so glad I did it. Yes it's painful but you know that pain will go. It's hard work keeping up exercises and finding new ways to do things. I am into my 2nd week post op and feel positive that I did the right thing and eventually all will be well. Good luck will be thinking of you.smile

Aveline Tue 02-Aug-22 20:44:44

Great news. Not long to wait at all but time enough for you to get organised at home for your post op recovery - just think, you'll soon be recovering from your long awaited hip replacement!

silverlining48 Tue 02-Aug-22 17:53:05

Excellent news ipadGrandma. On that date it will be 17 weeks since my new hip hop. We are all nervous waiting and at least you have little time to worry, you will be fine, no more pain. Honestly. Try not to worry. There is no need.
Let us know how the weekend tests go, don’t forget there is always someone around on GN if you want someone to talk to.
You and visgirl can compare and contrast, best wishes from me flowers

iPadGrandma Tue 02-Aug-22 17:33:08

Hi everyone, good to hear all the news and just for once I have something special to report.

My THR surgery it now planned for Wednesday, 10th August!

I have to go to the hospital on Saturday for MRI pelvic scan so surgeon can see what’s going on, (for those who don’t know, I was in hospital with Septic Arthritis 14 months ago, so it has not been straightforward) and Booked Admissions said he will have the results on Monday.

I have to go to hospital again on Sunday for PCR test so it’s going to be a busy weekend.

Now I am feeling anxious about everything. It’s only a week tomorrow. They will phone me the day before to let me know what time to arrive, apparently.

I am trying to keep busy but am so immobile I can do very little that is useful.
OH about to make us a pot of tea to enjoy in the garden, I hope!

Visgirl. I believe we’re getting our new hips on the same day. Best wishes to you, and all my hip friends.

Will keep you posted.

Aveline I find the gentle aqua exercises class I go to very good . Like you I’m very stiff having had my hip replacement 4 months ago. My hip is fine no pain but I’m so stiff all over and my back pain is awful. I went back to my osteopath yesterday and he gave me a really heavy session of pulling and stretching including my ankles and feet! I think it’s helped , but have DD, 2GC and Gdog staying . It’s pretty full on here the GC are very lively , at 72 I find them all totally exhausting including my DD! I can’t believe that ten years ago I looked after DS and DDiL two year old twins from 1-6 once a week without turning a hair and worked full-time on the other days!

Thank you Callistemon! I don’t mind bossy at all smile

I’m going for a blood test at The Nuffield tomorrow (‘pop in anytime’) and my results will be back by Friday (‘I’ll ring you as soon as I get them’)

It’s a different world isn’t it?

Getting a blood test via my GP would be a right rigmarole (including the bonkers 8am phone roulette) and take about 3 weeks.
And I must add that my GP Surgery is absolutely brilliant. I can’t fault them at all.

FannyCornforth

After a bit of googling, it looks as if I am aneamic.

You need to have some blood tests done, even being slightly anaemic can make you feel terrible.
As well as tiredness, your muscles can ache, you can get headaches, breathlessness, palpitations as oxygen will not be getting around your body.

At least a blood test will show up if you are anaemic or it's just post-op fatigue or something else.

(Sorry to be bossy)

A qua fit is very good exercise water supports the body so less likely to sprain anything.
Well done Aveline. Do let us know how it goes

Aveline Mon 01-Aug-22 15:21:40

On Bonesmart there is much mention of post op energy drain. They even have charts outlining the progression. I had very little bruising and only a short lived swelling. I wouldn't dream of sitting on the floor but I can manage socks etc perfectly well.
I'm generally very stiff all over so I took the plunge today and signed up for Aquafit again. I feel such a devil as it's quite expensive but I used to love it and it really helped my flexibility.

silverlining48 Mon 01-Aug-22 14:19:24

Thats a fair amoubt of sleep Fanny but clearly you needed it. Have a word when the hospital ring you.
dizza glad you are progressing and not too nervous about the second operation. Not long to wait.
I had my operation mid April so we are at similar stage of recovery. Strangely I had no swelling or bruising at all, but still not able to sit on the floor and stryggle with socks. I do have problens with big toe which affects my walking. Theres always something isnt there grin

FannyCornforth Mon 01-Aug-22 12:43:15

Thank you too Charley

Dizza I will read your post later, I’d better get something done while I’m still awake!
Welcome to the thread! smile

FannyCornforth Mon 01-Aug-22 12:41:24

Thank you again Silver
The hospital are supposed to be calling me today about the pain that I had last week.
I’ll mention it then.

This is how much I have slept:

Saturday, I went to bed at 6pm and woke at 12 am and at 4am to go to the loo.
Went straight back to sleep both times.
Woke at midday.
DH bought me some cereal, and I fell asleep for three more hours.
I got up at 4pm to watch the footie.
I had some tea, and went to bed at 9pm.
I usually read or faff about on here, but I fell straight to sleep and woke at 4am (for wee - of course!) and fell asleep till 10 am! ?

Forgot to say a big thank you to Silverlinings for the thread and all her advice and support to others, I found the thread very useful.

Hi everyone, I posted back in early April after my first hip replacement, just thought I would give an update,

I made good progress in the first few weeks, graduated from frame to stick at week 3 as I found the frame was hindering fluid walking.

The swelling had vastly reduced by week 5 although 4 months later there is still slight swelling and tenderness. It was a funny time, extreme boredom and frustration and sleeping on your back for weeks!!!

I have felt that there have been periods of time when I have made good progress and others where no progress has occurred. I think that is probably because the difference is so noticeable in the first few weeks and is more difficult to recognise as time goes on.

At the moment I am doing ok however my left hip also needs replacing and the dreadful pain like toothache is inhibiting much progression and hampering the recovery of the right hip. But good news I go in for my operation on September 19th. Very, very fortunate to be going back to our specialist orthopaedic hospital ( private hospital but being treated through the NHS)

The best advice Ican give I’d do your exercises regularly, try to keep spirits up . I am hoping in a years time to be pain free with no mobility problems.

It can be tricky because you can lose confidence and I look at others and think how lucky they are to not have to think about walking and movement! I hope to get back to that.

It is baby steps really, I went out with our daughter shopping on Saturday, was worried about it, but did manage ok, walking slowly and with breaks.

Good luck everyone who is recovering or having their operation soon. I was absolutely terrified, but am approaching the next one with a positive mind set as as I had such great care in hospital and DH was very good helping at home in the first few weeks.

Any questions please ask.

Fanny you have just had major surgery and you need to rest. We are also getting older which does not help.

silverlining48 Mon 01-Aug-22 12:10:33

Fanny sorry to hear that. You may be right about the anaemia, is it worth seeking medical advice?
Nothing to feel guilty about, but I know what you mean.

FannyCornforth Mon 01-Aug-22 11:38:54

After a bit of googling, it looks as if I am aneamic.

FannyCornforth Mon 01-Aug-22 11:13:47

It’s sort of hovering near to the top now grin

FannyCornforth Mon 01-Aug-22 11:11:10

The list has been doing that for ages. It just doesn’t work properly - it’s not just us!

FannyCornforth Mon 01-Aug-22 11:10:02

Silverlining, thank you.
To be perfectly honest, no, I’m not feeling great at all.
I’m really, really tired. I’m sleeping loads, and have absolutely no energy.
I’ve not even been posting on here, which is totally unlike me.
I’ve no interest in anything at all.
I feel so guilty, as I should be feeling great, and I’m not sad

silverlining48 Mon 01-Aug-22 11:00:47

DESpite my 4 posts just now they don’t show on the Active, or inactive, list. Does anyone have a clue why?

silverlining48 Mon 01-Aug-22 10:54:28

Fanny how are you today? Hope you are feeling better. flowers

silverlining48 Mon 01-Aug-22 10:47:57

YUP!

silverlining48 Mon 01-Aug-22 10:47:36

naughtieneine if you put an asterisk at the start and end of the name it should go to bold. Let’s see shall we?

Travels ( I don't know how to highlight names.. sorry). I think you do have to use your instinct too. I have up my sticks very quickly as I felt they were more dangerous for me on steep winding stairs and holding onto the wall/banister was better. I did use them when I was out on my own for a couple of weeks but held onto DOH when he was out with me. Driving was a contentious point on the other feed as I did drive very early (12 days post op) because the urgent physio appointment that they wanted me to have because of different leg length was 30 miles away ( no local ones available for 4 weeks). My OH works full time ( and needless to say they had staff shortages/Covid so he couldn't have time off to take me) and we have only been here for a short while and don't know anyone well enough to ask. I made sure I could stamp my right foot to do an emergency stop if necessary. If I made any mistake it was thinking I could follow up the physio session with a big shop in Aldi. By the time I got home I actually could hardly get out of the car. I think you are very much like me and want to be back to 'normal' asap. The advice seems to vary so much as to what you can/ should do so maybe check with doctor/insurance for clarification pertaining to you. I did garden very quickly too...I have one of those kneeler/seat things and used my arms to push myself up rather than using my legs. My measure was if it hurts...don't do it... Leave it a few days and give it another go. I've spent the weekend in a pair of really quite shorts wielding a pick axe removing a bank of very compacted earth in my in laws garden. I would never have believed anyone who told me 6 months ago that it would be possible. The only thing that hurt was my bruised bottom from falling down the mole hole. !!!. You are doing great!.
