Hello! ?
Welcome to ? 2!

A huge thank you and well done to Silverlining thanks for creating the first thread (which I’ll link to shortly)
It was an amazingly successful thread; which was remarkable considering that most of the time it was invisible! smile

Morning all, 16 days post op and I have just had my first shower and hair wash! It was wonderful smile.. However, feeling a bit smug, I got dry and dressed when suddenly my leg screamed at me to rest...
That brought me down to earth with a bang!
Hopefully no harm done....shamrock. I'm now resting with ice pack and have taken my meds.
I underestimated how much it would affect me..shockhmm.
Take care everyone..

You sound a lot more optimistic GrandmasueUK and your partner is supporting you which does make a difference to how you feel.
Take care...smile

Thank you all. I got my appointment letter this afternoon. I hadn’t realised I’d be on the ward for at least 2 hours. I have to take my dressing gown and slippers and I thought it was just a 15 minute appointment! My darling partner has decided that to help me lose weight he will buy me meal plans so I don’t have to worry about cooking and calorie counting. He’s a keeper and he was so supportive. I feel a bit better after a nap and watching some rubbish television.

silverlining I am disappointed that you do not know your place in life- like me we are obviously grovelling around the bottom! Maybe when we move we will stay for 5 minutes in Active.

Grandmasue I am so sorry to hear about the state you are in but pleased that the surgeon recognised that he had to do something to help you.

He recognised the tears were genuine and he is trying to help you. It is very difficult to lose weight at our age, especially if like me 1/4 of a mile is your best.

I hope you sleep well tonight.

silverlining48 Tue 22-Nov-22 17:54:06

Nope, we are about to drop off the end of Active. As has been said it’s a miracle we have kept going for so long since for most of the time we are invisible.
Greetings to all our happy band of hipsters and knee-ers too.

silverlining48 Tue 22-Nov-22 17:47:33

We are nearly at the end of Series 2 of hipsters anonymous so hope that Fanny may once again do the technical honours when we begin series 3. I found the dancing girls so useful when trying to find our thread in Active.
I post this in the hope that we make it onto Active. Here we go.....

Hello GrandmaSue, sorry to hear your struggles and hope the injection helps. I am overweight myself but read that obesity should not affect this particular surgery, but we all know that too much weight doesn't help recovery. Have a google and see wgat you find about this. Might help your case.
I was in a similar situation as you years ago where my bmi was just into obesity category. I tried hard to lose weight but its difficult to shift if pain and weight is involved. After appealing to him he put my case firward fir the Trust's consideration and it was granted. i had the operation which made a huge difference to my life and I hope you get yours.
Be careful of pain killers, they can cause terrible constipation.
Good luck and keep in touch. flowers

Aveline Tue 22-Nov-22 14:35:34

GrandmaSue sounds like the doctor took you seriously. I hope the injection helps.

labradorlinda33 Tue 22-Nov-22 14:16:52

GrandmaSue, you have certainly come to the right place. I have been made to feel welcome and have had lots of support and advice....You will too I'm sure..
It sounds as though your surgeon has realised you need help and I'm pleased you have your injection next week.
I do hope it helps. Take care and enjoy your nap. I'm having one too as I've been quite mobile this morning and it's catching up with me..

Well ladies, I went to see my surgeon today, it isn’t good news. I told him that the bariatric surgery could possibly be 2 years hence. He was fine with that but I burst into tears, said that I couldn’t wait that long as I couldn’t put up with how my life is now. I really don’t want the bariatric surgery anymore, as I have seen quite a few people on various sites saying they wish they hadn’t had it done. The pain is bad, but my quality of life is horrible. I’d written things down for him and I think the tears shocked him, especially as I told him I’d been having very dark thoughts. He still wants my BMI to be lower. It hasn’t changed that much, as I’ve lost weight, but also lost height!
He suggested a cortisone injection and increase my pain medication and my anti depressants. I agreed to this and he said he’d put me on the injection list, which would probably be about 6 weeks. I have just had a phone call from the hospital offering me the injection next Monday morning as he classed it as urgent! So something is being done. The pain is really bad at the moment, mainly because my leg has been twisted about and manipulated for the x-ray. I’ve just taken some more painkillers and I may just have a nap, as I didn’t get that much sleep last night.
Thank you for listening to me. I feel as though I can share with you because you have all had similar stories and I feel optimistic reading yours.
💐

That's great labradorlinda-just what we promised. This surgery is really worth it.smile

labradorlinda33 Tue 22-Nov-22 13:14:30

Sorry about your pain Washerwoman. I hope it lessens but how lovely to sleep wellsmile..I am now 2 weeks post op and I had my dressing off. I can take the dressing off at the weekend and if it's dry I can leave it off .....shower here I come!!!!
I can't quite believe how much better I feel compared to last week.
I went to a party last weekend and it was lovely to see friends.
I'm still in my routine of resting, walking and taking meds
I hope you are all keeping well...

silverlining48 Tue 22-Nov-22 11:00:10

Washerwoman sorry to hear about the pain but it’s early days and it will slowly start to improve. In the meantime keep in touch, there us good advice and reassurance on here.
Take it easy while there is swelling. Must have been great to get a full nights sleep.

Aveline Tue 22-Nov-22 09:56:14

Yes. Just let it settle. Ice and elevation should help to drain off the fluid build up but it'll take time. Trying to exercise it by bending and flexing will only make it worse. Keep walking about though. Have to keep the muscles going.

Washerwoman Tue 22-Nov-22 08:51:27

Morning all! After excruciating pain yesterday afternoon when I tried to lift my leg off the sofa and something tweaked inside I went to bed early and actually slept quite well.I iced it at 2am and this morning after the pain killers kicked in managed to partly do the flex and extend exercises whilst seated just now. I am however going even attempt them when the leg is as swollen as it was yesterday evening.

Aveline Mon 21-Nov-22 11:19:14

I forced myself to go to Aquafit this morning. Had to scrape the ice off the car and drive gingerly against the low sun then nasty walk on slippery leaves. Getting into the pool was bliss though and I feel a glow of satisfaction. I can watch TV all afternoon with a clear conscience.

silverlining48 Mon 21-Nov-22 09:00:59

I give up!

silverlining48 Mon 21-Nov-22 08:59:09

Giving it a bump onto Active. Why oh why are we invisible?

silverlining48 Mon 21-Nov-22 08:55:47

Morning knee and hipsters. I referred myself to hydrotherapy at the local hospital and am off later for my second appointment . Looking forward to the lovely warm water and hope it helps extend movement to being able to get on and out of the bath for example.
I tolerate a shower but much prefer a bath.
Have a good day all and hope everyone is feeling better day by day.

silverlining48 Sun 20-Nov-22 20:02:57

Not a downward slope Aveline you are quite right, friends can and do surprise you. People who I didn’t expect to be supportive were, while this really old friend wasn’t. This was following serious diagnosis of two very close family members.

Aveline Sun 20-Nov-22 19:54:00

That's very sad you two. I didn't mean to set the thread on a downward slope. I meant I was surprised at several people I'd thought of as, well, warm acquaintances turned up trumps. I really appreciated their visits, thoughtful gifts and one even came every week to take me out in her car. Meanwhile some of those that I'd thought were close friends stayed at arm's length ready to socialise once I was more able to be out and about.

silverlining48 Sun 20-Nov-22 19:36:17

That is disappointing Charleygirl. I know how you feel as I had a similar situation with a long term friend. I realised despite 65 years of friendship, she was a fair weather friend. It drifted for a while with occasional lunches, but it was just superficial so we stopped completely. It’s a relief as I spent/ wasted a lot of time with it running through my head.

Charleygirl5 Sun 20-Nov-22 17:54:29

Somebody I have known since I was 11 told me to my face she would not be helping me post-op. Fine, I could manage but I think that included her carrying two mugs of coffee I would have made from the kitchen to the living room!

She has not visited my house and I had my latest surgery in 2018. We do meet for lunch occasionally but we each drive from our respective homes to the restaurant. It is good to know where I stand!

Aveline Sun 20-Nov-22 16:11:20

You certainly find out who your friends are after joint replacement surgery. Sometimes they're not who you think they are. By which I mean people you hadn't realised were so kind.

Washerwoman Sun 20-Nov-22 14:33:42

Thanks. I was given a Cryo cuff to bring home.A wrap that has iced water in it and its brilliant. I am currently elevating my leg with it on and it's so soothing.I am alternating doing that with walking around. It must so much more painful with a total knee op.So as you say day by day - and I'm lucky to have DH ,and good friends offering lifts when I start going out.All the best to the hip and knee gang!
