Hello! ?
Welcome to ? 2!

A huge thank you and well done to Silverlining thanks for creating the first thread (which I’ll link to shortly)
It was an amazingly successful thread; which was remarkable considering that most of the time it was invisible! smile

Though often awake at night I don’t usually get up but definitely agree with its usefulness especially when using the shower.

Good morning everyone! All good wishes LabradorLinda for your surgery tomorrow. I had to be at the hospital very early too so you might be on the morning list. I went down to theatre early once the anaesthetist and surgeon had been to see me. I had spinal block with sedation and was sipping soup by early afternoon, pain free. Are you having a spinal block or general anaesthetic, do you know?

Quite a while before surgery I bought an Aidapt folding walking frame, the without wheels version. This has turned out to be so useful. Before surgery I used it at nighttime go to the bathroom as I felt much safer with it than using the two stick I had to use all the time.

When I was able to use our shower, once all the surgical clips were out of my wound, I placed it just in front of the shower door so I felt safe when getting out. I hung my towel on it and my glasses and am still doing the same, nearly thirteen weeks later! As I said, it is
the version without wheels, so doesn’t move. It folds away, that is a bonus, and I wouldn’t be without it.
I was provided with a height adjustable shower stool from our local authority and the all important raised toilet seat with arms. It is the arms which are so supportive when getting on and off!
Hope this information helps.

You are nearly there LabradorLinda. As Dudue Said we are both neatly 7 months post surgery but still remember I was terribly nervous before the operation but really there was no need.
Wishing you all the very best.

Thank you everyone...
Susie B..... have you had your surgery recently?

SusieB50 Sat 05-Nov-22 22:41:59

Yessilverlining I too have a rubber mat in my shower still . I did buy a raised loo seat but never needed it , it’s now with a friend who had a hip replacement recently. So many varieties of care, advice and provision across the country , I was just thankful I had my op within 4 months of referral. My first exercise on prescription is in 2 weeks , I had my assessment at the gym and I found the smell, noise and the sight of all the equipment very intimidating, but I have an instructor for 6 sessions😬.

silverlining48 Sat 05-Nov-22 20:36:11

I still use mine smile

silverlining48 Sat 05-Nov-22 19:10:43

Have I mentioned a decent rubber shower mat to stop slipping really helps make you feel safe.

Visgir1 Sat 05-Nov-22 18:27:09

One other thing which I'm sure you have probably though of, remember to move all mats from bathroom floor for a little while.
Plus any mats you could slip on.

Charleygirl5 Sat 05-Nov-22 16:40:49

The problem is one does not know what type of raised loo seat will be given. I am amazed you were not given one Susie.

Please do not be discharged until you are 100% okay about getting off the loo safely.

Do you go to the loo during the night? After my last knee replacement, as I live alone I thought it safer if I had a commode by my bed and it was a boon. I did not need it for long but it was very useful and is now in my shed in case I need it again. It was supplied and emptied by the carer who was sent for I think an hour in the morning for 6 weeks for free. If I needed her after that I would have had to have paid but each authority differs.

My loo seat is part of a structure that fits over the whole loo. It's free standing with good handles on each side. It was from Amazon. I wouldn't be without it!

SusieB50 Sat 05-Nov-22 14:56:14

You should be given a raised seat , ( I wasn’t!) which helps . I had a very secure towel rail to pull up on , but you can get raised seats with arms that will help . Both my loos are fairly high and I’m short so didn’t have an issue .

labradorlinda33 Sat 05-Nov-22 14:39:08

Thank you again.
I'm practicing using my grabbers to get dressed and my Sockaid.
However, I am worried about getting on and off the toilet. How do you do this without leaning forward and risking dislocation of your new hip? T I A.

Sounds like you really need this and you will be so happy when it’s over. No more pain, honestly, it’s a massive relief.

Charleygirl5 Wed 02-Nov-22 21:11:54

labradorlinda it is now less than a week, hang on in there!

labradorlinda33 Wed 02-Nov-22 18:03:49

Thank you for remembering about my run up to surgery.
Yes, I had an ECG, bloods and swabs taken.
I start using the special microbial wash on Friday and do a Covid test on Saturday. If all ok I will be having my surgery on Tuesday the 8th.
I have to be there at 7.30 am.
I am using 2 sticks to walk now..The pain is excrutiating when I walk, so the surgery needs doing and I haven't waited that long.

silverlining48 Wed 02-Nov-22 17:19:22

Hope all went well at the hospital today, nearly there.

Charleygirl5 Sun 30-Oct-22 11:58:37

As you say, labradorlinda your week is mapped out for you and soon you will be wondering what the fuss was about. Good luck.

labradorlinda33 Sun 30-Oct-22 11:04:33

Ah thank you everyone....so supportive and encouraging.smile We're away in Kent until tomorrow.. seeing family and having plenty of food and 'drink'.
On Wednesday I go to the hospital for bloods . Thursday I start showering with the special wash and Saturday a Covid test.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone..

Aveline Sun 30-Oct-22 08:44:10

I second that iPadGrandma. I still remember my sheer disbelief on realising the pain had gone.
I did worry about my incision area and was so scared of maybe pulling it as I got out of bed etc but not pain.

iPadGrandma Sun 30-Oct-22 07:55:33

Labradorlinda My own experience in August was that I had no pain at all after my hip replacement. If there was any in the first few days after surgery, it must have been dealt with by the strong pain killers given in hospital. Your old hip will be gone and you will have a new one. I hope all goes well for you too.
