A friend who lives alone is having a knee replacement soon. She will have help in the days immediately after getting home from hospital, but wonders how she will cope with the elastic stockings for six weeks. Can anyone advise, please?

I bought a devise to help put socks on and found I could use that for the compression stocking. It worked well. My surgeon told me not to worry about the stocking after a few weeks and I had no problem from not wearing it.

Put the plastic bag that the stocking comes in over your foot pull the stocking up and over the foot and leg pull the plastic bag out through the hole at the bottom of your foot Bingo works every time. Any plastic bag works.

A lot depends on where you live in the country but after my TKR in 2018, I received 6 weeks of free care x2 a day. I cannot remember how long the carer was here but it was long enough for me.

Very awkward to put these on oneself. I had a new hip recently and asked if i really needed to wear the stockings and surgeon agreed. Instead i had 4 weeks of self injecting my stomach....
Mayve your friend can discuss with the surgeon,
We have a helpful hip and knee thread which can be found via Health on the Forums.

I couldn't wear surgical stockings when I had my hysterectomy so had Heparin 32 injections to stop DVTs . One twice a day. I was fine on them and no side effects.

When you have a hip replacement you can’t change the stockings yourself as you are not allowed to bend. If you friend has to wear them , and can’t arrange for anyone to come in and help, I would suggest showering in them.
