Fobbed off yet again by hospital

Bit of background, I was diagnosed with a type of Blood Cancer in September 2020. Because of Covid I was given the news in a garbled phone call with no prior warning what to expect. Since then apart from 2 appointments at the infusion unit to have a blood check and receive my oral chemo prescription (back at the beginning) I only have 3 monthly phone consultations. After each of those (5minute) calls the consultant orders a new blood test before the next call and authorises my prescription which I pick up locally.
In July my consultant said she was leaving and I would get a new appointment in September/October from the new Doctor. Having heard nothing I rang the hospital and was told they didn't have a new consultant yet and the others in the department are refusing to take on any more patients.
So now I have no one looking after my case.
I emailed my GP (they dont take phone calls!) but no response after a week. Just rung PALS and they are chasing up the department but thats it.
I needed a rant about this, thanks for being there!

I could hear the edge of panic in their voices as the hours ticked by, and they tried to be all brisk and businesslike.

Callistemon21 Wed 26-Oct-22 22:32:04

I've heard of lost property but not lost patients.

MissAdventure Wed 26-Oct-22 22:34:03

I could have left her and taken home a nice cardigan (sorry, mother!) grin

???

Sorry, MrsAdventure, I mustn't laugh. It was your DD who made me do it.

MissAdventure Wed 26-Oct-22 23:17:28

DD? Daughter? smile

welbeck Wed 26-Oct-22 23:22:52

I was telling your mother about you.

Yes, welbeck, I was talking to MrsA about MissA
Sneaking.

My brain is definitely exiting stage. Left.

It sidles out a bit more as the weeks go past.

Callistemon21 Wed 26-Oct-22 23:25:56

I really must go to bed moon
Is it a full moon? ?

MissAdventure Wed 26-Oct-22 23:26:25

Oh, the cogs have turned, albeit slowly! grin
Sorry about that.

Callistemon21 Wed 26-Oct-22 23:28:14

Apologies to HAZBEENwe seem to have derailed the thread blush

Sorry, I do understand the difficulties you are facing and it really is frustrating.

welbeck Wed 26-Oct-22 23:28:52

having to wrestle with textual criticism, all those years ago, has borne some fruit ! maybe.

welbeck Wed 26-Oct-22 23:30:20

yes, OP, hope you get some better attention soon from the medics.
all the best.

MissAdventure Wed 26-Oct-22 23:30:49

I worry I won't be able to communicate at all at some point.

I was supposed to be having a memory test but I xant remember what they said. smile

My medic dd says they ‘lose’ patients all the time. They disappear off or discharge themselves or even have their mates come and ‘spring’ them, like they’re in jail! Problem is that they have to be accounted for so if they don’t turn up, security and police have to be involved.

Dd spent most of one night coordinating the search for a patient. He’d gone home but his family weren’t very pleased to see him and brought him back first thing next morning. grin

Hazbeen I’m glad you’ve managed to get sorted. flowers

My mum was bed bound, though.

My daughter 'done a bunk' when she was in.

Callistemon21 Wed 26-Oct-22 23:46:06

I did threaten to discharge myself once (it's a long story, I won't bore you) but I did tell the poor overworked one nurse on the ward first.

MissAdventure Wed 26-Oct-22 23:48:51

I discharged myself last time I was in.
I'd been outside in an ambulance for so long, I started to feel better.

Callistemon21 Wed 26-Oct-22 23:59:17

I thought home would be safer than hospital at the time.

You ladies have given me such a laugh this morning when I caught up with this thread!
I now have to go into battle today to get my blood test before the appointment on Wednesday or there will not be any use speaking to the consultant! Seemingly there are no appointments at either the GP or the local hospital!

Whiff Thu 27-Oct-22 09:53:14

HAZBEEN are there any walk in clinics or pharmacies near you that do blood tests? Have a look on NHS site or phone 111 and they may be able to help you.

I spoke to my GP Monday and as I was having my Covid jab yesterday at 10.20 at the pharmacy opposite the surgery she arranged for me to have my blood test at the surgery at 10. Both my surgery and pharmacy are both very busy and have large volume of patients.

It seems to depend where you live in the country what health care you get. Where I live GPs and hospitals see a very large number of people . I think it must be down to funding by the various health authorities what care you get.

I have better health here than I got where I used to live.

Hope you can get your blood test done before you see your consultant. But if not surely he will arrange it after talking to you on Wednesday and then arrange another appointment.

I was told by the Consultant that if I couldn't get an appointment with the nurse at the surgery or a visiting phlobetomist, there was a "drop-in" clinic at one of the large hospitals.
The trouble is that "drop-in" for me means a 36 mile round trip ?

Callistemon21 Thu 27-Oct-22 10:49:47

HAZBEEN, hope you got an appointment.

Sometimes negotiating the system is so difficult!

Theoddbird Fri 28-Oct-22 12:15:46

Glad you got it sorted Hazbeen. Hope everything goes well for you flowers

MissAdventure Fri 28-Oct-22 12:17:38

Me too. smile
(Sorry for hijacking the thread a bit, but glad it made you smile)
