Is anyone else getting shorter?

For a while now I’ve been saying that Marks and Spencer’s regular length trousers are anything but regular. At a hospital appointment yesterday, it seems I have lost nearly four inches over the last few years! Strange that I’ve never noticed it with my other clothes.
I know some height loss is common, but this seems a lot. I take Alendronic Acid to prevent osteoporosis, so I’ll be interested to hear what the doc has to say when I see him/her next week.

I was measured at my Annual Checkup recently and (so far) I’m still 5ft 5 inches.
I was told to expect some height loss in the coming years. I’m 70.
MarinaL there are other options apart from the op you suggested. Google the other options.

Women should check their height at least annually as any change is a possible sign of osteoporosis which needs to be nipped in the bud.

You need to start your own thread MarinaL
Entitle it Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. In this way those who know anything about the subject will see it and hopefully respond.
For what it is worth my understanding is that it is a common op (referred to as a rebore amongst some), highly successful with few complications. Having to wait two years is a disgrace.

Has anyone any experience of a male condition called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Basically an enlarged prostate which will need an operation to cut some away to improve the flow of urine. Nearly 2 year waiting list! Wondering how effective it is and the after effects. We've been given lots of printed info but would really the view of someone who's been through it.
Any advice appreciated.

Yes I'm a bit shorter in spite of the fact I wear a raised shoe on one foot - and my grandson is now sooooo tall!!!!!! smile

I have had a diagnosis of Osteoporosis for 21 years, yet I haven't lost any height at all according to the nurse who measured me at my last Dexa scan.

Thanks for bringing this up as I never measure any part of me.
Bit dismayed to find I'm 1 inch shorter . Huh!

Grandma70s Thu 03-Nov-22 07:17:57

Nobody ever seems to measure me. I was about 5’ 9, but am definitely less now. It’s hard to tell because I can’t stand up really straight.

My once 6’4 brother, now 86, says he has lost at least 4 inches, probably more.

But 3.75 and 4 inches is a lot, 2 inches is the average. More than that is often associated with osteoporosis or other health problem.

sweetcakes

I've gone 5ft 4 to 5ft and a 1/4 of a inch in the last 10 years but 4 inches that's a lot!

Well 4 inches isn’t really that much more than 3 and thee-quarter inches!

It's worth mentioning that M&S reently changed the lengths of their ranges - the petite and regular ranges are now quite a bit longer than they were. I think they do an extra petite now as well - Mumsnet have had a long thread on this

I am sure I have got shorter.Reaching into wardrobe shelves and top kitchen cupboards is now such a bind due to having to climb onto a chair first. I recently volunteered for the Future Health program for research and on measuring I am still 5ft 1inch in stocking feet

annsixty Wed 02-Nov-22 21:12:03

My GD on standing at the side of me remarks that I am shrinking.
I have osteoporosis and when having DEXA scans I am measured very accurately.
I have lost almost two inches in about 3 years
Short to begin with but now even shorter
Part of life’s plan .

Marydoll Wed 02-Nov-22 20:50:09

I have gone from 5ft 2 to 5ft.

I have osteoporosis and two unhealed vertebraic fractures, held together with cement, which would account for it.
Only yesterday, DH commented that I was getting even shorter.

JaneJudge Wed 02-Nov-22 20:43:35

yes i am shorter too sad

The taller the GC get the shorter I seem to be. I was 5'5" now 5'4", I do have Osteoporosis so maybe not surprising. I have an idea you are slightly taller in the morning.

I'd read that as well, and I often have to adjust my car rear view mirror in the morning.

I've always been 5'5" but at my last annual check-up the nurse said I was 5'4".
I said, "Oh I've always been 5'5" !" and she laughed and said, "Maybe so, but you're not now!"
I got my husband to measure me at home and he made it 5'4 1/2". I'll settle for that for now!

My Mum had osteoporosis and lost several inches in height.
What annoyed her most about it was that it made her stomach stick out, and she felt she'd just won that battle after many years of trying 😕

tickingbird Wed 02-Nov-22 19:49:18

No but I wouldn’t mind if I did as I’m 5’ 10”!

BlueBelle Wed 02-Nov-22 19:21:13

I ve gone from 5’7” to 5’4”

henetha Wed 02-Nov-22 18:24:07

I've lost two inches, officially, the hospital told me. My mother once told me that we come from a long line of shrinkers. smile

M0nica Wed 02-Nov-22 17:50:46

I am preparing myself for the day very soon when DGS will be taller than me. I will then, officially be the shortest person in the family.

I am consoling myself with the knowledge that DD will be 50 next year was the same height as me before I started shrinking. She too will be beginning the downward shrink and we may yet be the same height again.

Oh dear - I hope I don’t get any shorter 😫

Lexisgranny Wed 02-Nov-22 17:25:56

It seems I am fortunate, having only lost half an inch since my teens.

Incidentally I do have a theory about M&S trousers. For years I wore their long length trousers, having always had long legs, but then suddenly it seemed, only needed regular. I believe they increased the length of each category as heels became higher, which also coincided with my heels getting lower! The fact that I have only lost half an inch and will be 80 next year seems to support theory..

annsixty Wed 02-Nov-22 17:25:27

I have lost almost two inches and have to shorten M&S trousers too.
But they do seem to be making them longer as they are now about 4 inches too long for me.

MiniMoon Wed 02-Nov-22 17:13:57

M&S petite range fit me perfectly now. A few years ago they were much too short. I was measured when I changed GPs about 20 years ago and I'd lost a half inch then. I wonder how much shorter I am now.
