👯‍♀️Hip & Knee Replacement #3 👯‍♀️

Thanks Charleygirl. The NHS put me on the urgent list for tkr then I was offered an arthroscopy to try to remove some of the swelling. I would then be back down the waiting list. I would not go private in the UK it's horrendously over priced and you are only in hospital a maximum of 3 days.
I had my left knee replaced in March in the EE (Lithuania) and I am going there again on Monday.

fflur as I said earlier to somebody else, the xray will not improve. Would it not be possible to cancel the private surgery and get yourself on the NHS list? A lot depends on your age and where you live as to how long you wait.

I live in London and it is horrendous.

I had my second knee replaced in 2018 and I was in for at least 9 days. A fellow came stomping into the female ward shouting about something. He had had bilateral knees replaced the previous day and he wanted to be discharged so he was trying to find a doctor who would agree.

Each of us is so different.

I am in a similar situation Fun2read and Silvergirl. I was in so much pain a few weeks ago However I have been so much better the last two weeks. I think it's the opposite of a flare up, which is a well known phenomena, I just feel better than usual mentally and physically. I think my strict iron tablet regime has kicked in as well. My dilemma is different though in that I arranged to have a private tkr in the hospital that did my first knee in March. Feel guilty spending all that money when I feel so good. The surgeon has seen my x-ray though and I definitely need a tkr so hopefully I will recover quickly. I think moods and feelings of wellness are usually transitional whereas severe arthritus will never miraculously disappear however much we hope it will. My I am shocked you were sent home the same day Granysb, I have heard rumours they might do that here in Wales.

Adding to the conversation to bump the thread up hopefully. FuntoReadI think it’s wise to get the hip done even though not much pain now. I had one done April 22 and the consultant said my other would need replacement too in the future . I’m getting intermittent pain now but GP seems to think it’s too early . But I’m going to ask to get on the list as it will probably be at least a year. I’m very happy with the first op - life changing in fact .

The driver taking me to my knee op said that the oldest patient he had picked up was 95! Not sure if it was fir hip o

I have just had a Quick Look and there are no age restrictions for hip operations. Commonly ages for operating are 70/80s.plus.
Obviously your neighbour may have medical issues when may affect surgery but nonetheless his age alone shoukd not get in the way of surgery.

My goodness we are dropping down the active list fast. We should be at the top, but hey, t ‘was ever thus.

I don’t think that 80 is too old, I am not far behind.
Has your neighbour seen the gp to ask about a referral to a consultant? Taking morphine long term can’t be good for you.

What is the oldest age for a hip replacement? A neighbour’s dh has so much pain from both hips and can hardly walk. He is now on a very high dosage of morphine and quality of life is poor. He was told there was a high morbidity rate. I think he must be 80. He now wants to insist on the op if possible. Is this likely? Any ideas I can pass on.

We are close to our 4 th hipster and knees thread and I have been thinking of all those who have contributed to this since it began early last year.
I have just seen a neighbour who was in a lot of pain for a long time but despite my encouragement was reluctant to seek help. In the end she did and now, a couple of months post operation, is fully recovered with no pain and no problems. Absolutely delighted. 🤩
It really is a life changer.

To be fair to my DH, he has longstanding back problems, can't drive because of visual impairment, and is being seen by cardiology at the moment.Add to this he is 85 now, and I think it was quite reasonable of him to suggest going to DDs, and her response was that she expected it.

Well in this case, he is definitely 'excused'. Enjoy your time with DD and being spoilt.

grannysyb your DH can certainly take a rest because with his problems he could not cope. With luck you will soon be up and about again.

Fun2Read I think you have made the correct decision because if the pain returns it would take an age to get you on the list again and we are not getting any younger.

I was thinking that there was something odd about my pain disappearing as it always seems to get worse for everyone else so it is very helpful to hear about your experience Silvergirl. I have decided to go ahead with the operation as putting it off is so risky. As you say it is a strange situation and I really do hope that things work out well for you and as silverlining48 says it might be worth going back on the waiting list. Good luck with your decisions too.

I didn’t have constant hip pain either silvergirl, so dithered a bit, but after a guided injection the pain worsened considerably and I knew then the operation needed to be done.
The thing is it is unlikely to improve over time, so you might want to look into your options again.

Fun2Read. I have had a similar experience to you. I went to physio with serious pain in my arthritic hip. She x-rayed it, referred me to an Ortho Specialist with a view to a replacement and gave me exercises to do. By the time I went to the specialist the pain had almost gone and he used my lack of pain as a reason not to operate. I agreed with him at the time although my range of movement is still very poor. He said a THR may not improve that anyway. Unfortunately a few months later the pain was back and I regretted not putting myself on the waiting list. After exercises etc over the past month or so, the pain has reduced but not gone away. I find it all very strange as most of the people I know have constant hip pain prior to the THR. Good luck with your decision.

Maybe DH has health issues himself and truly could not cope. Otherwise, I'd be very annoyed at him. OH was amazing when I came home both times.
