Hello 👋

Here is the new thread!
Thank you to regular and irregular posters all.

Especially those such as Silverling and Charleygirl who have provided so much advise and support. (There are lots of other lovely posters, but too many to list).

As well as advice, there is also much wisdom and kindness.

I will link to the first and second threads below.

Wherever you are on your replacement journey, you are most welcome to join us here smile

Good afternoon to all hipsters and kneesters.
Thankyou for asking Fanny but it isnt ùntil wednesday, so I am putting last minute things in place for my return home.
At the moment all the does and donts seem daunting, but I am sure that is nerves getting the better of me.
I will keep you all updated thursday.
Once again thankyou for the support

This cold weather does not help our arthritic joints but as a few of mine have been replaced I have less pain now!

Give me 3 months and I will be moaning about the intense heat.

Poor neglected thread sad

Downtoearth how are you doing now after your op? I hope that you’re okay.
Thinking of you and looking forward to hearing from you thanks

I think I am going to turn the mirrors all around Susie, I have my hair cut every 3 weeks, and not being able to wash it and get to have it cut, and my nails painted for quite a few weeks is going to be a big dent to the ego, I dont have a lot goi for me at the best of timesgrin

SusieB50 Mon 17-Apr-23 16:58:50

downtoearth I know that look! After I had my hip replacement, and I came home three days later , I looked in the bathroom mirror and I could see my poorly 86 year old dad looking at me !
I looked dreadful but my DS who collected me didn’t comment until I mentioned a few weeks later . He said “I was a bit shocked mum” …
I think now it’s such a short stay after really quite major surgery we forget what a trauma to the body it is .

downtoearth Sun 16-Apr-23 16:19:24

Well done Irish eyes, I am hoping to be as good mobilty wise as you.

Have had major surgery on other bits before, leaving me looking like I have just been dug out of the grave, hoping this time better.

silverlining48 Sun 16-Apr-23 12:24:49

Oh and keep smiling Irisheyes smile

silverlining48 Sun 16-Apr-23 12:23:55

Irisheyes I havnt had a knee op but know its a more complicated process than a hip. So on that basis you seem to be doing brilliantly.
Take time to rest too, remember its major surgery and keep in touch.
A lot of us have had our surgery some time ago so fresh views are always welcome.

I have had both knees replaced, several years between and no way could I have walked for 20 minutes a day so soon. I was in a lot of pain about 6 weeks after each event and I would not like a repeat performance although now I am fine.

I have a friend who was walking up and down stairs the following day as though nothing had happened. Each to his own.

Irisheyes Sun 16-Apr-23 11:59:43

I had a total knee replacement 16 days ago and finding it the hardest thing i have done. Not being totally negative, I’m managing to get into the the shower, over the bath, using a small step stool. I have cut down on painkillers and manage a 20 minute level walk most days but I feel absolutely washed out, pale and weak. 13 years ago i had a partial on the other knee and recovered fairly quickly. Guessing being older is part of the problem.

Charleygirl5 Sun 16-Apr-23 11:03:41

I was in the same position as you but I was getting to the stage I could not get my 1st leg over the bath with ease. I decided to get rid of the bath, buy a double shower and also a stool for sitting on which is great when I wash my hair.

If that is not possible, I would fit a shower board and also buy I am not sure what they are called!) a roughish mat for inside the bath as well as one for outside.

My shower floor is very slippery but the mat I have is so rough it would never move so I do feel safe.

You are not getting any younger so maybe think about the future?

downtoearth Sun 16-Apr-23 09:46:27

Thankyou

silverlining48 Sun 16-Apr-23 09:00:11

Seems like you are already organised downtoearth. It will all work out and won’t be long before you have your life back.

downtoearth Sun 16-Apr-23 08:55:11

Thankyou SL,and everyone who has offered tips and information, this has enabled me to become organised with things I needed to put in place.

silverlining48 Sun 16-Apr-23 07:37:56

I washed at the sink for the first few weeks, as did not want to risk a fall.
Suggest you mention you won’t have help to the hospital. There ought to be some fir a few weeks after discharge.
Its manageable of course as others on here have also been on their own but it will be difficult, especially in the early days. Keep in touch and I wish you well.

downtoearth Sat 15-Apr-23 16:12:29

JE fortunately I am in a GF flat, so all on one level.

I am wondering about showering, my shower is over the bath, this is the problem I havent been able to solve.
Has anyone solved this problem, I have thought maybe a shower board that can be secured, and use the scarf method of hoisting leg in and over, I do have a grab rail fortunately there already.

I dont have anyone that can be with me.

cornergran Sat 15-Apr-23 16:01:06

After a TKR I was sent home with a frame. The hospital physio insisted. Of course not all work the same way.

JenniferEccles Sat 15-Apr-23 15:49:45

Yes I see your point about the wheeled trolley for night time loo visits but if you live in a house you will then need it downstairs during the day. You say you live on your own but do you have somebody with you for the early days who can take things upstairs and down for you?

Visgir1 Sat 15-Apr-23 15:37:41

I had TKR Christmas 21 and THR Aug 22 then had to wait good 6 months between the two.

TKR much more painful, but Hip fine.
Had my first THR 8 years ago.

OT contacted me week of op and equipment arrived the same week. I used crutches for both Knee and Hip this time . Zimmer first time around, I found Crutches much better.

I did buy a little rotating shower stool off Amazon to put in the shower, as after having x3 replacements I found I needed help in the shower.
I also found bubble wrap placed over the dressing sealed up with Micropore works a treat and keeps it dry. I also bought a shower sponge thingy on a stick that I found invaluable.
Recently gave the shower stool to a friend who was having a THR then eventually a Knee.
As for getting in and out of bed, agree something long to help heave you leg up into bed.
Make sure they get you a high loo seat /frame that a must.

Best of luck, I've been back at the gym since January 5 months post op and don't even think about it now.
