Is this bad news?

I have just had a bout of gastroenteritis (clear for 48 hours now). A blood test showed low sodium levels (130, when the norm is 133 - 146)
The doctor rang this morning and I have to do another blood test tomorrow.
I am worried that this is going to be bad news. Has anyone else had low sodium levels, and was it treated successfully?

I am not a doctor, but with a norm of 133-146 there is a range of 13 units, so being 3 out is not a lot, particularly if you have had gastric turbulence. My guess is that the retest is just to make sure that your levels are not on a downward slide. I haven't had low sodium, but I've had other things that were out of range at one test but were fine after a retest.

Your level is just below normal, and may well have been a result of your recent gastroenteritis. Try not to stress about it as the next result may show an improvement.

Thank youDoodledog that's reassuring.

Mine normally sits at that level Antonia I’m a conundrum to my GP. You’re recent illness will have upset your levels, I’m sure the next test will be fine.

Have you taken any replenishing/rehydration drinks for the gastroenteritis you are recovering from?

Things like Dioralyte over the counter might help.

Could you do an internet search and find out if there is an easy way to rebalance your sodium?

I've only recently learned, what lots of other knew, that there is a lot of science around hydration/re-hydration.

For instance DD2 often get an upset tummy before marathons, nothing like gastroenteritis, that affect her sodium levels. She also has to watch her sodium levels while running.

Apparently she is a "salty" runner and has some complex recovery drinks. Her running pal is a "sweet" runner and has a different mix for her recovery drinks.

I hope your recovery is going well and that you find a solution to your low sodium levels.

allsortsofbags I was taking these. I stopped for a couple of days but I'm back on them now. I'm glad your daughter is able to manage her levels.
