Dry Eyes affecting vision.

I was diagnosed with dry eye (which was really bad in one eye in particular); was prescribed eye drops and used a heated eye pad, all to no avail. After 5 years the problem was getting worse and I was suffering from continual eye infections. Finally I was referred to an eye specialist. After tests it turned out I actually had a blocked tear duct. I had surgery, which completely solved the problem. To be fair to my GP and optician (who both diagnosed dry eye) I think I do have dry eye too; both eyes run in very cold weather and when I wakeup in the morning. But it is mild and nothing like as uncomfortable as the blocked tear duct was.

My dry eye condition is in fact the opposite, my eyes stream when I am outside and when I yawn. I am seeing an Eye Specialist who recommended. putting in eye drops 5 times a day. It hasn’t improved the condition much.

I read an interesting article by Dr Scurr this week in the DM which mentioned a device for warming and vibrating around the eye, especially for dry eye. I use the heated eye bag with only limited success, so I’ve shelled out and will start using it today. I’ll report back if there is any improvement. Fingers crossed 🤞

I use prescription eye drops every day, but occasionally I miss putting them in and my eyes soon let me know I forgot.

Just ordered the eye bag you recommend Rainbows. How long do you microwave it for? I see you can’t wash it but I suppose you just keep it in a clean container!!! Thank you.

I have chronic dry eyes and get preservative free eye drops which I use thought the day on prescription . I also get an eye ointment which is for nights but I use it early evening before watching TV and it helps . I have had cataracts done and it made no difference.

Flodora, did you have a problem with your cataract aftercare which was related to your dry eyes? I was thinking of you using antibiotic drops. Did you continue to use your preservative eye drops at the same time? I can imagine that the soreness and pain associated with the condition would be made worse by the operation. I am so sorry about your trouble.

I am so sorry to read of your awful problems. I had not heard of Sjorgrens. It sounds awful and I do hope you can cope with the symptoms enough to manage a good quality of life.

Marydoll I'm finding my stomach really bad with reflux, etc and I've had 2 dental appointments in last 3 months. I love reading and I'm dreading getting to the stage of being unable to do so. I've realised a lot of things that my mum suffered from for years are the same as mine, but she was never diagnosed.

I've just become resigned to it, along with a whole raft of stomach medication.
I was a patient in the cardiology unit last week and one of the doctors commented on my nausea episodes, whilst there, saying he thought my Sjogrens was to blame.
Its a horrible condition, with no cure.

Baggs No aroma thats just the name,I spray a little water on it before I switch it on .its been very good and it stays a constant temperature for the time chosen,between 20 and 60 for up to 40 minutes

Alioop, my rheumatology consultant keeps an eye on my condition, because it is an autoimmune condition.

It doesn't just affect my eyes, but my mouth and stomach.

I have Sjorgens too Marydoll, but I'm still waiting on my 1st hospital appointment to see what they will give me. I get very sore, dry eyes so hoping it won't be long before they send for me.

Thank you sooo much. What wonderful advice. It makes sense and I am definitely ordering the eye bags and will also bathe with warm water. The idea that you can get too used to eye drops makes sense as I now have to use them more often than I used to. Thank you all for your excellent advice. So grateful.

Here's a link to the eye bag I've been using.

I have dry eyes and I use an eye bag everyday. It can be heated in the oven or in microwave. I leave it on for 10 minutes first thing in the morning. Then I gently massage my eye lids with my ring finger. After about a month, the difference was incredible. I no longer wake up with gritty eyes and stiff eyelids.

@Baggs - there is no smell or aroma to the Eye Bag.

Does your heatable pad have an aroma, paddyann?

Baggs, that was the term my opthamologist used.

I was told to buy a heated mask and use it twice daily .I bought one with a usb and a set temperature and my eyes are almost back to normal .Ido it last thing at night and listen to music while I have it on as it sends me to sleep otherwise .Bought mine from Amazon ,the morning session I do while I use my kegel so killing two birds with one stone just before I get up

Last year, after treating a damaged cornea with antibiotics and drops for dry eyes, my optician suggested I massage my eyes every other day with warm compresses to encourage the tear ducts to work properly.

I use washable cotton make-up pads dipped in warm water and massage three or four times most mornings. It seems to have more or less dealt with the runny eye problem I had.

No idea how I injured mt eye (hole in cornea) and got an infection – perhaps something caused by my hedging work. Odd that I don't remember an ouch moment.

Anyway, the warm compress eye massage thing might be worth a try for people with sore eyes. You can buy microwavable pads to hold over your eyes for the same purpose but I find the make-up pad method simple enough.

I have Sjogren's systems, which means my eyes are permanently dry and it affect my vision. I also have unripe cataracts.

I get dry drops on prescription, but recently my optician wrote to my GP asking him to prescribe the latest dry eye medication, as my eyes were pretty dry and sore.

Sometimes, we just get used to the drops. I have tried a number of ones, but after a while, they don't help.
Perhaps you need to have a word with your optician.
