As a royalist but also a princess Diana fan, I'm struggling, I can't stand to see camilla crowned queen, I don't want to watch, it's making me less of a royalist, I wish he'd just pass it on to William and Kate

.....Or celebrating it.

The National Lottery if asked should confirm if they are taking money from food banks to give to the coronation

NotSpaghetti Sun 07-May-23 08:09:41

I don't want to cause a riot here but if the guy quoted above (750 people fed last week) is correct, his local foodbank is obviously wrong.

They say they fed 4565 people in the past year - 2,734 adults and 1,831 children. These figures are across Bodmin, Camelford, Padstow and Wadebridge.

I think it's a disgrace to have to have foodbanks at all - but having worked with a local one I do see how important they are. Sadly.

Whether the lottery would discuss where they are gifting money instead of to one of the applicants I don't know. The Trussell trust is involved - so maybe they know something?

I don't know if there really is a link between food banks and the coronation.
Maybe someone has some actual evidence please?

My feeling is we don't pay enough tax in this country I have felt this for years. I'm not an accountant and not experienced in taxation but I know I'm not alone in thinking this.

Also, for what it's worth, we should have a minimum wage that is really a living one.

Just a few thoughts. Not looking to argue with people.

I've never seen a placard with a strap before far less the industrial level of placards. This was obviously meant to be large scale and would turn nasty as the peaceful happy crowd would inevitably have been furious at them.

People were arrested in London this morning for preparing to protest about the coronation.

I know, and I’m still waiting to find out why. Perhaps you can help.

I read on the BBC News app, when the story was new, that one of the protesters said that the police had mistaken straps on the placards, which the protesters said were for stability, for the means to tie themselves onto things as a protest.

Yes, they were luggage straps apparently.

We always carry a few, you never know when they might come in handy
😂

Letter in The Guardian - because it's behind a paywall I'll type it out here:

Regarding your recent coverage of the Coronation and the cost of the Crown, our local foodbank supported about 760 people last week out of about a population of 10,000 in our local area. In recent years, the foodbank has used grants from the National Lottery to support its activities but recent applications for funding have been unsuccessful. They have been told much of the funding is going to events celebrating the Coronation.
While it is a massive indictment of our Government that so many people are driven to need this help, it is also a sad reflection of how out of touch our monarchy is, that a man worth £1.8bn will indirectly result in so many people going hungry. Jonathan Holt, Camelford, Cornwall.

Read that yesterday evening as quoted on Twitter, and I think that is a fair comment to give weight to earlier posts about the cost of the Coronation and foodbanks.

I’ve not been a Camilla fan but - today I enjoyed her smiles during the ceremony. She looked good and their love and support for each other was evident. I fear I’m a Lost Cause. It’s the marching men, women and horses with the marching bands that did for me.

Yes I can just imagine her doing that DamaskRose Camilla looked lovely and I liked the Jack Russells she had embroidered on her dress. A woman after my own heart.

Back to Camilla.

Hope she is enjoying a large G&T now, chatting with the family and walking about in her slippers.

Just what my DDiL messaged as soon as it was finished! Yes she did look lovely.

^Doesn't Camilla look lovely?^
Yes, she does.
Someone criticised her for smiling but it was probably a smile of relief!

I also thought she looked lovely.. and loved seeing her smiling, as I did some of the invited guests,. surely it should be a joyful occasion..

I'd be surprised if they were arrested for their views

Perhaps information led to a stop and search and there was a reason for the arrests.

Until we know, everything is speculation.

nadateturbe Sat 06-May-23 15:39:47

Did the police really need a good reason??

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 06-May-23 15:33:52

‘I think we all know it’s wrong’. Really? I certainly don’t think it’s wrong. Perhaps ‘Some of us think it’s wrong’ would be a more accurate statement.

Yes, very British, not.

nadateturbe Sat 06-May-23 15:27:05

Some people were arrested in UK today for their views Mollygo.

I'm not stupid GSM. But our HoS is an inherited position. Not democratic.

I think we all know its wrong. Some people just prefer it and quote bad examples of republics to justify it. 🙄.

No no Easybee it is wrong. Not democratic.

Putin was elected in a democratic election.
Just saying.
We have a Constitutional democracy in this country.

In some democracies, comments like we can put on GN, could result in arrest or worse.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 06-May-23 15:16:25

Do you not understand the words ‘constitutional democracy’?

nadateturbe Sat 06-May-23 15:13:43

You can't have an opinion on a fact.
Stealing is wrong. Fact. Having an undemocratic system is wrong. fact.

You can have views on which works better. But some things are just wrong.
In your opinion. You don't believe in it, therefore it is wrong.

Which is rather like saying, I believe in freedom of speech, but there are limits.
