Last weekend my husband and I went with a friend for a couple of days in France. Picked him up on the Saturday and was less than thrilled when he said he 'had a bit of a sniffle'. However, had a lovely time until a couple of days later when I started to develop a cold (my first since January 2020). This cold got progressively worse, I coughed and sneezed continually and could barely get enough energy to climb the stairs. High temperature, sore throat etc. - all classic cold symptoms but so much more severe than a normal cold. A friend suggested I take a Covid test and bingo - I (and now my husband) have Covid. Had it once before, Feb 2022, but this time it is much worse AND we have had 5 vaccinations. I hadn't even thought about Covid these past few months and yet I have just read in the newspapers that there is a resurgence of cases but no specific monitoring is being done. My daughter, who works in a hospital, has said they are told not to even bother testing for Covid as they have to come into work as long as they are fit enough to work. Soooo - just be aware, this particular illness has not gone, it's just been lying dormant but is now (partly because of the weather being so bad, apparently) starting to spread again.

Hope you feel better soon Doodledog. I had Covid last year but with much milder symptoms; yours sound awful. It is SO hard to rest or sleep with constant pain. flowers

How are you now Doodle?

Doodledog Tue 15-Aug-23 13:42:07

I feel a bit better today thanks. I have a cough, and am still tired, but nothing like as bad as at the weekend.

Mr Dog has come down with it now, too, though.

Iam64 Tue 15-Aug-23 13:43:07

Oh dear, get well soon mr dog

He'll have it worse than me, I'm sure 😉

Get well soon, both of you.

I'm getting up tomorrow. I've been stuck upstairs so as not to infect Mr D, but now that he's succumbed there is no point. He had the house to himself when I was away, and then I've been up here ever since, so I'm re-staking my claim on the rest of my house as of first thing tomorrow.

I had a very bad day yesterday. I felt so much better than suddenly felt a lot worse. I have woken up feeling weak but less awful, so I hope it has broken.

Callistemon21 Thu 17-Aug-23 10:27:38

Oh dear, did you try to do too much?

Hope you start to feel better now, but do rest.

maddyone Thu 17-Aug-23 11:14:41

Hope today is a better day for you.

Doodledog Thu 17-Aug-23 11:26:08

Thanks. No, I got worse over yesterday, so didn't get up after all. Mr D has had it before, and said that this is usual - a 'good' day is followed by a setback. I hope I don't get more like that. It's been a full week now.

My son (in South Africa) said the same... a good day followed by a bad one.

You really have to restrict your activity level. He said that after the aches had gone, the worst thing was the fatigue and tiredness, but by being economical with his activity, he gradually regained his strength - but, it took a while.

Of course, everyone's different. It may not be as bad for you.

Sending you positive 'vibes' DD. And - stay hydrated (boring as that is).

Doodledog Thu 17-Aug-23 11:53:26

I have a zero activity level grin. I've been in bed all week and the most I've done is have a bath now and then.

Anyone claiming that this is just like a cold clearly has either never had it, or got a very light dose.

I was away at the weekend, at a folk festival, singing in crowded pubs. Came home Tuesday. This morning I woke up with a bit of a cough. Now I am on the sofa with a blanket round me, my head is thumping and my eyes feel awful. Husband went and got me a test and there it was - a second line, not dark but there. ..... I am really 'p'd off! After all this time and all the jabs!

Doodledog Thu 17-Aug-23 19:31:14

Oh no! I hope you have a mild dose and get over it quickly. flowers

I find that a large bowl of hot water laced with Olbas Oil is great for helping with breathing.

Have you tried menthol crystals instead of olbas, much more effective and cheaper than Olbas.
I have chronic lung conditions and was first given this in hospital in November 1977!
I remember the date, for I was newly harried and it was so strong, it nearly ripped my lungs out. 😉

I hope you feel an improvement today, DD.

Get well everyone

Me and DH tested positive last Saturday. We had both been ill for a week before our DDil (a nurse) suggested we do a covid test. I've fully recovered but DH is still not great. We are both fully vaccinated. There are lots of people saying they have 'bad colds'. I bet they actually have Covid. The schools go back in a couple of weeks. We are in for a bad autumn aren't we.

Doodledog Fri 18-Aug-23 16:33:27

I don’t wish this on anyone. It’s like no bad cold I have ever had.

I read today that private covid testing kits are to be sold along with private immunisations
Also, that a new strain of covid has been found in several countries

Yes, that’s right. My son told me that private Covid jabs will be available for £100 each. I’ve no idea if that’s right, or where he got the information. I haven’t seen him yet as he’s just returned from America where he was on holiday. He/they all caught Covid on the way over and weren’t great for a week but then recovered. He says he’s buying the vaccine for them when it becomes available. I’ll ask him tomorrow how he knows about the private vaccines and cost as we’re seeing him tomorrow for grandson’s birthday.

Luckily I think most of us Gransnetters will qualify for the free vaccine, but I believe it won’t be available for quite a while. Not sure when.

I know about the new strain too. That’s worrying. Especially since we don’t know when the vaccine programme will be rolled out.

Get well all Gransnetters who have Covid. Stay safe everyone else.

I find it ‘disappointing’ that our government appears to be ignoring the recent spike and the new variant

So do I Iam.
