My friend who had two non-contact concussions has finally been scanned and has sustained brain damage.

I am sorry but you cannot be too careful about concussion. I have had too much contact in my life with people who have had concussion to be other than exceptionally caustious.

Brain damage is caused when the brain swells - and that can take several days, with no bruises or soreness at all. However even slow swelling or slight swelling in the wrong place can do serious brain damage.

Lovetopaint037 can appreciate your fuzzy head and general overall weakness sensations.. i too had a backwards fall 8/9 wks ago and because neighbours helped me up, i didn't go to A&E until i saw GP 2 days later as was feeling very unwell...GP sent me to A&E ..i had a knee scan as knew it was the knee that gave way initially...Unless you have vomiting/and or loss of consciousness, you won't get a head scan...I was surprised as always thought if you had bumped your head and{ you could actually feel the bump on back of head}, you would automatically get a head scan... i didn't fit the criteria so not eligible...never knew this...thought i would be bouncing back to normal by now but still having vertigo problems...wishing you wellflowers

LTP037 It is not uncommon for the effects of concussion not to be felt for several days. I had a friend who was in a car accident and banged her head. She was fibe for 3 days, and then the swelling of her brain began to affect her. She was off work for over a year.

Do not take risks, get yourself checked over to eliminate the possibility of concussion.

Thank you everyone. Monica thank you I didn’t feel as if I was concussed. In fact the muzziness occurred after a couple of days. I must admit wondering if the tablets were responsible but have now come off them.

LTP037 The fCT THat you did not hit your head when you fell does not mean that you did not suffer a concussion injury.

A friend has suffered from oncussion twice as the result of falls that led her head to move sharply, although she did not actually hit her head on anything.

Go back to your doctor and ask for a scan and concussion assessment.

Glad you're feeling a little better. What an unpleasant time you've had.

Lovetopaint - my 83 year old neighbour, tripped over my steps, fell and fractured her femur. She was in hospital for about 6 weeks and is now almost back to normal. She has slight occasional pain in her leg, but nothing will stop her. She is out daily although walks with a slight limp.
She takes strong painkillers, cocodamol. She has also been given a tablet for her bones because she has osteoporosis,
She does feel lightheaded at times. I’m sure it’s due to the tablets. Any medication that obtains codeine makes you lightheaded. It can also cause constipation. The Doctor has given something to counteract that.
Be careful everyone. My grandchildren always ask me why I walk with my head down 😂

Just having a similar conversation with my 85 year old aunt. In her case it was seeing her husband fall over - no injuries - he's fine - but she was upset and says she just finds it difficult to 'get back to normal'. However, slowly, she is - just takes longer!
Hope you feel better soon.

You have no idea how much better I feel now I have read your kind replies. Thank you so much. So thank you Mizuna, Grannynannywanny I can feel your pain you poor lady, do hope you are feeling yourself soon. Yes Iam64 thank you for your reassurance. Yes Callistemon21 when this first started I thought this might be the case so reduced them as soon as I was able. I was taking paracetomal and ibrufen alternately. Thank you again.

Callistemon21 Tue 08-Aug-23 20:36:47

I'm not sure what painkillers you've been given but yes, it could be those. I can't take codeine, they make me feel 'spaced out', nor tramadol. Shock, too, could make you feel strange.
Just as well you've seen the GP.

I can sympathise as I can fall over a pin and damage myself.

Take care and don't try to do too much.

Be easy on yourself

Iam64 Tue 08-Aug-23 20:07:16

Loveto paint, I wonder if shock is a contributing factor. So yes, I suspect you’re feeling weak and muzzy and weak as a result of trauma. We aren’t 39 any more and don’t recover quite so quickly

Calipso Tue 08-Aug-23 19:41:31

Might it be a side effect of the pain killers Lovetopaint?

Grannynannywanny Tue 08-Aug-23 19:32:54

I think a fall does leave you shaken up and out of sorts. I tripped on the kerb 10 days ago and scraped and bruised my already swollen painful knees and bruised my wrists. I still don’t feel 100% after it.

That was a nasty fall you had Lovetopaint037. I hope you’ll feel better soon. Try to be reassured by the fact the doctor has given you a good check over. Take things easy and hopefully you’ll soon be back to yourself 💐

Thank you silverlining. Your tumble sounds so painful. I do hope you are comfortable and able to walk.

Mizuna Tue 08-Aug-23 19:26:32

That would have been quite a bump, falling on to hard ground. Plus seven stitches, ouch. I simply tripped on a sock (yep!) in my flat and plunged down on to the (thin) carpet very heavily. Concrete floor under the carpet. Was sore for weeks and very shaken. No muzzy head but it was the shock of suddenly finding myself on the floor that did it for me. I'm so careful due to my crutches and dodgy knee and was amazed at how weak and feeble I felt for a few weeks. (I'm 70, by the way.)

silverlining48 Tue 08-Aug-23 19:22:50

Sorry to hear that love to paint
It’s a shock isn’t it. I had a fall, or rather a trip or a tumble a couple of weeks ago and broke some toes.
It’s good to have seen a doctor. Once you get blood results am sure you will be feeling better. Try not to worry flowers

Lovetopaint037 Tue 08-Aug-23 19:06:47

Was just wanting to know if any other elderly person has had a similar reaction.

Lovetopaint037 Tue 08-Aug-23 19:02:38

Thank you Wellbeck but the doctor went over me yesterday and now waiting for results of blood test next week.

Just over two weeks ago I fell at the top of a neighbour’s driveway. I tripped in an old gate stop which I stepped back on. I fell on my elbow and back. Taken to A&E and had 7 stitches in my elbow. Obviously shaken up and needing pain killers for for pains in various areas. Since then I have felt mussy in the head and very weak. I definitely didn’t hit my head. I went to the doctor yesterday. My bp is okay, my ears have been checked and she listened to my heart. Now going for a blood test next week. I am 82 years old and wondering if this could be a reaction to the trauma. Concerned as I am not improving and still weak and mussy. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Just want to get back to normal.
