My Gp surgery will do suction but won't syringe and only when a patient has tried the method I posted. Apparently most people find it works so well they don't need to have the suction. I'd tried the 2/3 drops of olive oil method as well as the hydrogen peroxide based drops but they weren't having any effect. This method was so effective, which is why I posted about it as I thought it might help a few people and save them money as I know some GP surgery's don't do suction and patients pay privately to get their ears cleared. Preferably use an unopened bottle of olive oil so it's clean and I warmed the oil in an egg cup in the microwave. It was such a relief as my hearing was so badly affected and I was having balance problems.

For years my GP advised almond oil and we always kept some in the medicine cabinet. Recently olive oil has been prescribed.

Is mine the only family that used almond oil not olive oil? That also came from the chemist not the grocer

When I was young everyone used warm olive oil for earache and ear wax. You could only get it from the chemist in a little brown bottle with a cork stopper. I am not ancient only 65. Seems the old remedies are still working.

They don't syringe at our surgery any more, Jaxjacky.

I did have mine 'hoovered out' once. It was lovely!

I thought everyone used olive oil for ear wax.

That's the only reason we had olive oil in the house when I was a child.
It was a small bottle kept in the bathroom cabinet, not a large bottle in the kitchen food cupboard.

I must admit I haven't tried it for years but I might try it on DH, he doesn't seem to hear anything I say, or he mishears it.

I’ve been having my ears syringed, now microsuctioned, almost yearly since I was 14, my GP advised olive oil years ago, now Earol, which is olive oil based.
If you saw what comes out of mine yuck!!

I squirt loads in! Takes a few days for the wax to rise to the top, though. I sometimes wonder how I can hear at all the amount that comes out! But only in the one ear.( it’s quite Shrek like blush)

This has always been the way we have cleared ear wax buildup....

Not something I've suffered with and when I googled it the NHS help line said use 2 or 3 drops of oil not 1-2mls of warm oil!

For some reason I only have a build up of wax in my right ear so I put olive oil in it every so often.

I think it becomes more common as we get older as the wax can get drier. I posted this because I've used olive oil in the past to soften wax prior to having it syringed, but I've never used this much oil and left it in for so long and it was extremely effective. The hydrogen peroxide based products that I tried had no effect at all.

I woke up on Wednesday morning and I was completely deaf in my right ear and had very reduced hearing in the left one. I'd been having problems for a while and been using drops from the chemist with little effect. I popped into my GP surgery to see if they still did ear clearing and receptionist said if I waited for a short while a doctor would see me and I saw a trainee GP who confirmed I had a build up of wax. Treatment was put 1-2 mils of warmed olive oil in my ear and lie down for 10 minutes, drain and then do the other one . Do this 3 times a day and if in three weeks I still had a problem they would treat it at the surgery. I did it three times on the Wednesday, woke up on Thursday morning with much improved hearing in left ear and some hearing in the right. By Thursday evening I was back to normal. No need to buy any special oil and I saved the £67 it would have cost me to have it done privately.
