Asking for recommendations for a good multivitamin, I am a 70-year-old woman..

Jaffacake2 Sun 22-Oct-23 12:28:52

I take Centrum multi vitamins and minerals for women over 60. I have quite a limited diet due to allergies so thought I should take supplements. Not sure if they make a difference physically but reassuring to me that I'm not missing something vital ! On sale Boots and big spuermarkets.

Supermarkets, they don't seem to work with improving spelling !!

If you like them Shinamae, have a look at the Subscribe and Save repeat order option on Amazon.
It's easy to set up, you can amend it if you need to, and it gives you a discount on the price.

Now that’s an industry over saturating the market and making people confused and just grabbing your money.

I’m 76. I’m so-so about taking vitamins. I cherry pick what I want and need - only Vitamins C and D3 (for bones). Anything more than that is wasted on me, or they even have an adverse effect on me. I would not want all the excessive vitamins in a multi-tablet.

The two I take are vital to my health and every woman. I eat a balanced diet and exercise enough. Talk to your Doctor about other ones they recommend for you based on your medical history.

I do NOT take these: calcium, iron, B vitamins, magnesium. I do not have high blood pressure on cholesterol issues. (Who knows, both may change in the future as I get older.)

And remember - some vitamins and herbal supplements may interfere with any medicines you are taking. Be cautious.

Research, inquire, don’t waste your $$!

I have taken a Holland and Barrett senior multi for years , was recommend by my old GP when I was 53

@Gundy . Retired nurse here . The only vitamin I take is vitamin D as prescribed by my Diabetic consultant. I totally agree with you and believe it’s a money making racket . Any surplus vitamins will be ejected in your wee .

For Shinamae, I've had multivits for years, Boots have perfectly decent range, but you do NOT need the ones labelled 'Senior', and beware of any with 'extra Iron'.

I do prefer to get those with the recommended dosage of Selenium, which I read somewhere is a key mineral (sorry, forgotten why!).

For those saying a "balanced diet" is fine, well, yes it's good, but one multivit a day isn't overdoing things, and may just make up for something you've missed?

I ALSO take a garlic cap every day, ( better if it's odourless!), helps ward off colds and flu for some people (and I don't get many colds, famous last words).

The ones I found and I’ve ordered. I am going to send back because you need to take two a day and there’s only 90 in a pot so that works out very expensive so they’re going back..🤔

I agree with others on here. If one is eating a good & varied diet, multivitamins are completely unnecessary. They just produce expensive wee.

Most people who have varied diets don't need supplements though they can be useful as we get older.

Vit D is best from sunshine (not through window glass but greenhouse glass is fine). Supplement is probably no help unless you are very low - then go out in the sun a bit more.

Multivits with vit E can give too much vit E which in excess can lead to cancer.

Vitamin B12 needs supplements for vegans, ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminB12-https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminB12-HealthProfessional/
