Same here. I was 58 when I was diagnosed, I’m 62 now. It’s not that bad , you just have to read the ingredients on packets all the time to be sure . Gluten can be in all sorts of things that you woudn’t think, stock cubes, malt vinegar, soy sauce for example. It’s a bit daunting and confusing at first but you get used to it x

Melanie61 I can't thank you enough. Because I'm 65 I can't believe I've developed this out of the blue. I don't even eat much bread or cakes but I suppose gluten is hidden in lots of things. It's a complex journey ahead of me but I will get myself organised and get cracking.

I was covered in the rash, it’s awful.
Nothing relieved it. The only way was to cut out gluten completely from my diet. It started to improve but took weeks for it to go completely. I have no problem with my skin at all unless I eat gluten. I’m very careful but if I eat out and there is cross contamination, say a sandwich prepared on a surface that has normal bread on it , I get a flare up but nothing like the original rash.
The problem is in diagnosing gluten intolerance is that you have to keep eating gluten until you have a colonoscopy which will give a diagnosis. A blood test sometimes doesn’t show it up.
I couldn’t stand the awful itchy rash so cut it out straight away after my doctor thought it was gluten intolerance, so I’ve never been formally diagnosed. That’s ok though , I’m better and my doctor agreed that this was ok. Hope this helps

Melanie61 yes it is exactly that. How did you deal with it?

Is the rash a mirror image on both halves of your body? I had this. It’s a characteristic of Dermatitis herpetiformis. I had no internal symptoms at all

I get a similar rash all down the front of my throat. I got it last Summer for the first time, then again this Summer. I finally worked out that it seems to be associated with the hayfever I started getting about five years ago and which seems to be getting worse every year. The rash starts on my throat and spreads down my chest and up my jawline onto my cheeks. At it's worst my throat dries up and the skin peels, a bit like a snakeskin (but it's done wonders for the lines on my throat 😆)

This year I tried Allevia for my hayfever and it actually worked, and I noticed that the rash disappeared. I also tried an eczema cream and that seemed to stop a lot of the burning and cracked skin.

Lactose intolerance can cause a rash. Perhaps get tested for that?

I have the most awful rash, scalp, torso, knees. Red, angry and I've never known itching like it. I've a drawer full of creams from my GP, nothing has worked. Had this since April but doctor has now tested for gluten intolerance. Am at my wits end. Anyone else been on this journey?
