Just tucking into brekkie of tea and fruit bread toast. I don’t use much salt in cooking because I thought it was bad for you but perhaps I should add a little more.
Australian raisin bread is the best! There's nothing quite like it here in the UK.

My favourite breakfast!
It has to be white bread too (farmhouse) which is even worse with apricot conserve or homemade bramble jelly.
And tea.
Sometimes I'll have Greek Yogurt with fruit and honey.
However, I do eat protein, vegetables and fruit too.

Eaten tea and toast all my life but I do use salt in cooking and definitely not short of it
Do these elderly people put nothing on their toast other than butter or spread?
Marmite = sodium
Peanut butter = protein
Not ideal of course but are we talking about very elderly people or those who just can’t be bothered?
I just have a slice of toast and low fat spread, and coffee for breakfast. OH has Weetabix (yuk). I usually just have soup for lunch. OH has a variety of things with plenty of protein. Always a meat or fish-based meal with plenty of veg in the evening. I don’t enjoy cooking and know that if I was on my own I would just have toast and something/ baked potato/soup. Some protein from eggs or cheese but not enough. I envy those who enjoy cooking a delicious, nutritious meal for one. That will never be me.
i love my food, I have always loved my food and when I have lived alone I have always had three good meals a day,
Because of a medical condition I had as a child I have always been conscious of making sure that i am eating a healthy diet; plenty of fibre, plenty of liquids and plenty of exercise.
I find it difficult to envisge a situation when I would be reduced to just living on tea and toast. I do not like supermarket bread and I am really not wild about tea.

I too have low sodium and am banned from taking Omeprazole as it lowers it further, it’s a balance between bp, not helped by too much salt and keeping my levels ok.
We eat well, erring towards low carb/fat, lots of fresh veg.

I love to cook, easily spend half the day in the kitchen. However I'm not a big eater - so, I eat lots of healthy protein with my carbs.
Perhaps peanut butter or houmous on your toast?
I have had low sodium for a long time, it's not due to lack of protein or a balanced diet for me. I do now add salt to cooking which has raised my sodium levels a bit.

I like food (and cooking) so much I don't think I'll ever "not bother to eat".
jackiehill I was brought on cheap but nourishing food. My father was malnourished as a child many days only having bread and jam or dropping . My mom was brought up on cheap cuts of meat but plenty of veg , dried pulses and pots.
My brother and me where brought up how mom was. We always had 3 meals a day and always a pud after dinner.
My late husband loved his food. Made sure we always had breakfast,lunch and dinner. The children where brought up like me.
I am now 65 and always had 3 meals a day.
I am disabled from birth and because of my health the last 6 years have porridge for breakfast made in the microwave. Lunch is my home made red lentil and whatever soup. The whatever is what I have in the way of veg. I make enough soup for 6 lunches and blitz it with a stick blender . I store it in the fridge and add but if water yo reheat as it thickens in the fridge. My dinner again is made enough for 6 dinners. I eat chicken, Quorn sausages,mince and chicken pieces. Lots of veg and usually pearl barely in the stew or pasta put in last 20 mins . I do make a lasagne which lasts 6 dinners. It's portioned into 6 oven proof dishes to reheat everyday. I have short cuts for everything including baking. I make my own jams , marmalade and chutneys but my way.
Being disabled means I have adapted my cooking even when making fresh meal everyday day when the children where home and my husband was alive. I have been widowed nearly 20 years.
In 2017 after having jaundice and no on depandant on me . I decided to tackle my obesity. I was over 19st. My way of eating I have lost 7 st which I realised was a marathon not a sprint. Lost it 2 years ago . Still trying to lose the last stone. I was size 32 now 16.
Eating my way means I never have to worry about not having a nourishing meal in the fridge everyday.
It's not just older people who don't eat healthy lot of to younger people don't they really on ready meals or take away. Cooking isn't hard and anyone can do it. They just to want to do it . Cooking from scratch is cheaper and using left overs just needs a bit of imagination.
This has been highlighted recently by a Dr , may have been Micheal Moseley , I can’t recall.
It gave me a wake-up call as I can resort to tea and toast or breakfast cereal when I just “ can’t be bothered “.

I recently had a short stint in hospital because of low sodium levels. The symptoms are weakness, cramps, in limbs. Nausea & dizziness. Brain fog and confusion. Unfortunately it affects the brain mostly, and if untreated can cause coma & death.
It seems that older people no longer have to care for a family, often do not bother to cook, and tea & toast are our 'go to' breakfast or snack. We do not get enough protein. This is then made worse by certain medication, which many of us are on as we get older, resulting in low sodium. This was a wake up call for me, and I think all older people should be aware.
