Hi I had a fall on my left knee and badly cut it had to go to hospital and have 9 stitches in,also had an xray but nothing broken although was very painful to walk on it.I slept with it raised up in bed and taking paracetamol very often,it's 8weeks now.Its still painful at times but the wound has healed good and I am 76smile.It could have been a broken hip so was happy it wasn't.

Please be careful taking ibuprofen. It isn’t advised for the over 65’s and, if taken needs something to protect your tummy eg omeprazole. I’ve never found doctors to be very good with problems like this although it might be an idea to have an x ray. If it’s soft tissue damage that won’t show up anyway. I’ve found chiropractors and physios to be more helpful and knowledgeable. I wouldn’t advise pushing yourself. It will need rest, elevation, heat or cold or both. I take turmeric for my joints but it can’t be taken with some medication. I do use ibuprofen gel if I have a flare up: it did work better than my long time favourite Voltarol recently. And I now do the pre knee replacement knee exercises to strengthen the muscles round my knee. I also use a patella strap sometimes although I sometimes think it make my knee even more sore.

Ouch. I fell heavily on an arthritic knee (concrete floor) and did all the things you're doing at first. Eventually had to go to the doctor because it was so painful and stiff. An x-ray showed no damage but before that I got told off by my (lovely) doctor for not going sooner. It took weeks to get better. Not sure any of this helps you but all I would advise is to get it checked out sooner rather than later. (I'm 70 by the way.)

Really run of the mill but just wondered if anyone had any advice. I fell on Monday. Thought I was OK but by the evening the left leg was really quite painful around the knee although I'd managed my normal walk. By Tuesday it was painful in bed and felt unsteady first getting up, ie as though the knee would give way. It didn't and gradually the bruising is coming out. Getting out of bed/chair it feels very unstable for a few steps but then feels stable. I'm resting, icing and hot water bottle and managed Sainsbury's this afternoon. Anyone any advice as to what to take to get the internal swelling down (if there is any). Have taken the full dose of Ibuprofen but not sure it does much. I'm late 70's and realise things taken longer these days but usually I'm quite fit and active. Would physio help? Is it best to try and do all the daily things I was doing before this or will that overdo things?

Sorry for the ramble but just in case someone may have been through the same thing and may have some advice.
