Hi, Grankle. I had a hip replacement on 1st August and I was very nervous about it. But once the spinal block was done (with a sedative that sent me to sleep) I knew nothing until the anaesthetist said 'wake up, it's all over'! It was that easy. I couldn't see what I was worried about.

Although there is pain from the operation wound you know it's going to improve and the absence of the actual hip pain is wonderful. I can still hardly believe it.

I was dreading sleeping on my back because I never do. However, the advice I was given was that I could sleep on my non operated side from the start as long as I had a pillow between my knees.

Aveline, remember I mentioned that I was concerned that I couldn’t manage the recommended exercises? I confessed to my surgeon that I hadn’t been doing them as I was worried I’d cause myself an injury and that I needed to be as fit as possible as DH needs quite a bit of care. Mr A (surgeon) shrugged, smiled and said, “just keep walking, you’re doing just fine.”

Sounds like you're making good progress greenmossgiel! Don't discard the stick too soon. I always found useful to indicate to others not to come too close in crowded places. Also, it always got me a seat on the bus!

silverlining48, I had my TKR on 21 June and was also given a raised toilet seat and 2 sticks. The loo seat is still in use and I think it will be for some time yet.
Saw surgeon a couple of weeks ago and he was really pleased with my progress. It seemed the way I sat down (without thinking) was almost enough for him to gauge this. He doesn’t need to see me again.
I can now walk outside without using a stick, but do take it with me to our wee corner shop as it has 2 steps. My balance is a bit wobbly now and again, so more often than not, I have my stick with me.
Haven’t managed a bath yet, but can step over into the bath and sit on the seat which we bought quite a while ago to help my husband.

You may be given a raised toilet seat after your operation, I was. Together with two sticks and have kept both in case there’s a next time.
Do tell them you are on your own. There may be provision fir a few weeks post hospital help via Red Cross

Please tell the staff you live on your own because discharging you the next day I think is too soon.

Have you got a low loo because you will need to borrow a raised seat from the Occupational Therapy dept.

Trying to sleep on your back for 6 weeks will not be easy.

You will not be able to clean the house or flat, can you arrange to get a cleaner?

After each knee replacement, I was too exhausted to change my bedding but I had a cleaner for yonks so that was not a problem.

Welcome Grankle. Monday isn’t long to wait, I know I was nervous but really no need. It was fine and recovery from a new hip is more straight forward than a knee.
Would add to charleygirls good advice that a long handled shoe horn is very useful fir putting shoes on…
Getting into bed is awkward, a tea towel or piece of material under your legs helps to lift them up together.

It will take a week or two before you can more easily move around so if you can try and get some help for the first few days. Even if it’s just someone popping in.

Grankle if possible could somebody stay overnight with you for a few days?

We do not know what you will be used for walking to start with and if it is crutches or a Zimmer it is very difficult to carry a cup of coffee from one room to another.

Unless there is somebody able to cook for you it would be better to have a few microwaveable dishes because it is difficult to cook and you will be learning everything at once.

Getting in and out of bed is difficult as is going to the loo during the night.

A picker-upper will be your new best friend.

I will not overburden you at once but there is plenty of help available here. It does not matter how stupid it appears to you, we have all been there at one time if not for a hip replacement, for a knee.

I'm going in hospital for a right hip replacement on Monday, it will be done using a spinal block. I have been told that, all being well, I could be out on the day after my operation!
The nerves are really kicking in now.
Can any tell me how much help I am going to need? I live alone.

I had my hip mri’d today. I have no idea how long I have to wait for results but at least it’s done. Could hardly hear Classic fm on the earphones over the noise of the machine.

Had a hilly walk the other day only 3+ miles, fair whacked me out.

Saw my surgeon this morning. He's well pleased with my knee. I don't need a stick any more but will carry one when I'm in town until the crowds lessen. I want to get back on the coast path eventually and for that I'll take my walking poles, which are pleasant to use anyway.

I went to Perranporth this afternoon but actually couldn't get on to the beach! Hundreds of people had parked their windbreaks and tents very close together just where the big sands begin. So I went to the library instead and then lay on a bench in the sun. I'll do my beach trek after the school hols.

It's hard to believe I'm finally out the other side of this joint-replacement-marathon; it's been years. It'll take my head a while to adjust. It'll take my body just a few minutes. 😂😂 Next stop, my allotment.

Silverlining my late DH came from Walmer and we used to walk the cliffs to St Margaret’s too - beautiful ! In fact any walk next to the sea is exhilarating.
We are staying in Cornwall and will try the coast path but I think I’m being too ambitious! I will probably manage the sea front from Penzance to Newlyn which is lovely….
Hip quite painful this evening but a friend has told me it was a few days before it improved so still hopeful .

I had my right hip replaced last December and all is well with that one. I was never offered a steroid injection, I guess the arthritis was too far advanced for that.
My left hip is now quite painful, so I’m seeing a consultant in September to discuss a replacement for that one. I’m hoping to be fit enough to enjoy a family break in Center Parcs in April! mizuna is my inspiration!

Ah Susie, I had a guided injection which made things worse for me, hope you have a better outcome. Give it a few more days.
Which cliffs are you walking on. My favourite walk is Dover to St Margaret’s. On a clear day it’s possible to see French white cliffs along from Calais.

Hello all , I had my second injection into my other hip on Tuesday, early days but not sure it’s been so successful this time . The pain is definitely reduced though so hopefully I will be able to walk on the cliffs in your neck of the woods Mizuna - having a family holiday for a week there.
Hoping the beds are comfortable and we have some good weather 🤞

silverlining all the best for tomorrow. At least the result will show if the cement has moved or even split because you should not be having pain so long after your last fall.

I will keep my fingers crossed it is something simple and manageable.

I am having an mri on both hips tomorrow. Since I fell last summer things have been a bit painful , so just checking all is well.

Mizuna hope all is well tomorrow. It sounds like you will be passed fit.

Mizuna I think he will be very pleased with your progress especially as you have not overdone things and listened to what your knee was telling you. You have done well.

I am a tad jealous as living in your neck of the woods is so good. It beats London!

I've been wondering about Callistemon too. I've put my crutches aside now and am using one walking pole. I can feel an improvement in my strength every day. Our bodies are so clever at healing themselves, aren't they? I see my surgeon tomorrow for my two-month check-up and am looking forward to that.

Aveline I think but not 100% certain somebody in soop's kitchen is in contact with Callistemon so may be able to help you. It was very recent so you should not have to search far back. She and others were mentioned. If I come across it on another thread I will get in touch. I had forgotten she had a new knee recently.

Has autumn arrived? I was thinking I may need a hwb tonight.
