Greetings hipsters and kneeknockers. It is with great pleasure and some surprise that we have reached episode number 4 in this 🧵. Welcome to all.
Onwards and forwards we go. Advice, support, encouragement and everything else available here.

Mizuna Wed 17-Jul-24 20:02:06

Thanks Charleygirl, I had a good day.

Redcar Wed 17-Jul-24 20:06:33

mizuna I’m pleased you had a good day, no doubt it feels as though life is getting back to normal again.

Mizuna Wed 17-Jul-24 20:53:40

Thanks Redcar, it's been so long I've forgotten what normal is. I think once I can get to visit my daughter in Liverpool again I'll know I'm getting there. (Not tomorrow though. 😂) She's blind and last time I went it rained incessantly, the pavements were treacherous and my crutches slithered everywhere. She kept me upright by hanging on to me. We made a right pair and had some good laughs but it will be good to go back without any drama. 😁

Hope it isnt be too long before you get your trip to see your daughter Mizuna

I had an appointment with orthopaedic doctor on Thursday . My very successful injection into my hip is wearing off and hip hooray he’s booked me for another guided injection. He said as long as the gap is more than 4-5 months you can continue to have them for as long as it works which is good news. I should get a date within 3 weeks although this was before the IT issues ! 🤞I get it before the family holiday in Cornwall at the end of August.

silverlining48 Sat 20-Jul-24 10:24:36

That’s interesting Susie. I was told by my consultant that people should not have. more than 3 of these injections in a lifetime.
My guided hip injection prior to my hip op 2 years ago worked for only a few days before my pain returned, unfortunately much worse than it had been before.
I was told there was necrosis so wonder if that was the reason, and asked the consultant if the injection had made things so much worse and whether it caused the necrosis, but never had a satisfactory explanation. I think it was probably just bad luck.

mizuna I hope you’ve had a good day today and that you get to visit your daughter in Liverpool soon. You are certainly making excellent progress with your new knee.

Mizuna Sat 20-Jul-24 20:40:46

Thank you both re Liverpool. It's an eight-hour train journey so I won't be doing that for quite a while. My daughter will probably come this way first. She and her husband usually come down in August and she stays on when he goes home.

Had a good time with my eight-year-old granddaughter today, first time on our own at my place since the op. She crocheted and pottered and worked with some clay while I iced my knee. She's fascinated by my scar, just as her dad is. 😂

silverlining48 Sun 21-Jul-24 13:23:16

That’s a long trip Mizuna. I am sure your dd won’t expect you to make that journey so early on. Not long til August.
The day with your gd sounds really relaxed and enjoyable.

SusieB50 Sun 21-Jul-24 13:50:43

silverlining yes I was always given that information too , maybe the guided by ultrasound injections are more precise and recommendations have changed . My first injection into the other hip ( now replaced) was not done with guidance by ultrasound and performed by the orthopaedic doctor. Like you it had no effect at all. I think it depends very much on the skills of the doctor who performs it unfortunately. I got lucky!

Susie I had a guided injection …… sad

greenmossgiel Mon 22-Jul-24 08:19:51

I look at the thread every day to see how everyone is getting on. I’m a bit isolated due to the support my husband needs and just catching up on others’ progress is really helpful.
I’m finding that the only way I can get any sleep is to lie back on my recliner, which I end up doing a couple of hours after trying to sleep in bed. I need to bend my knee and I do find that uncomfortable while in bed. I have a 90 degree bend on my knee, which I’m quite happy with and I can manage this fine while on the recliner. I did try to do the exercises, as I mentioned in my earlier post, but gave up and just walked about the house and I think (hope) that this will suffice. I walk in the garden with a stick. I’ve found that regular paracetamol works for me now, and haven’t used Oramorph for a few days. I haven’t ventured further than the garden, and am absolutely desperate to get out somewhere and do ordinary things, but I know this will come. I see my consultant early next month, so I hope I’ve been doing everything right!

Aveline Mon 22-Jul-24 08:29:05

Sounds like you're doing as well as possible Greenmossgiel. I'm glad you're getting a bit of sleep. I always ended up on my recliner too. After my knee and hip ops I never take a good sleep for granted.
Keep walking about. You're doing fine sunshine

greenmossgiel Mon 22-Jul-24 08:52:04

Thanks, Aveline. ☺️

silverlining48 Mon 22-Jul-24 09:05:29

Greenmoss Giel have you tried using a pillow under/between your knees?
I still use one 2 years post op. It would not help in a lounger though but for me it does in a bed where there is more space.

silverlining48 Mon 22-Jul-24 09:09:49

It might help to use a sleeping pill if you are not sleeping well. My gp prescribed pfenerghan which gives a nights sleep when needed.

greenmossgiel Mon 22-Jul-24 09:52:38

silverlining, I’ll give a pillow a try. I probably catch enough sleep on and off during the night, though.

SusieB50 Mon 22-Jul-24 10:06:20

I found being unable to sleep properly the worst thing after my hip replacement. I also still use a small cushion between my knees two years on. Not sure it would work for knees though. I am grateful that although my knees are creaky, stiff and knobbly , I don’t have any pain in them and they work OK. My SiL had a knee replacement and didn’t do the walking or exercises, she has other problems and is immune suppressed and doesn’t go out much so just pottered around the house and garden but it’s been very successful and has no problems.

Charleygirl5 Mon 22-Jul-24 10:41:53

It is frowned upon in hospital to put a pillow lengthwise under one's knee because it can cause a DVT, deep vein thrombosis.

It is comfortable to lie on one's side, a pillow lengthwise between the legs and one behind one's back. That stops sliding onto your back.

I dreaded going to bed after my first knee replacement because I could not get comfortable. It is trial and error for each individual.

greenmossgiel Mon 22-Jul-24 11:34:03

SusieB50, that’s good to know, that your SiL had no issues after having done no exercises.
Things change from day to day, I think and it’s always good to learn what works for each individual.

Aveline Mon 22-Jul-24 12:03:51

greenmossgiel legs were designed for just walking so that's the ideal exercise. Don't overdo it though.

silverlining48 Mon 22-Jul-24 12:23:16

I should have said using a pillow for knee/hip and sleep on one side .

silverlining48 Mon 22-Jul-24 12:32:34

Just thinking what I still use 2 years on other than a pillow between my knees.
I still use a long handled shoe horn , and now have a bit of a collection of these in different lengths ( and colours) [smile) in different places. Even a tiny one for my bag if I am out shoe shopping .
Always use poles if walking for any length of time.
What I miss most is proof the raised toilet seat which was so easy on my knees.
Wonder what others hipsters and kneesters used and still find useful.

silverlining48 Mon 22-Jul-24 12:33:38

Is probably the raised toilet seat

SusieB50 Mon 22-Jul-24 14:18:16

My picker up thingy ! Definitely drop more stuff than I used to , it’s permanently in the kitchen, also I can reach things too high up with it. I still have a stool in the bathroom to sit on when drying myself. I think we had the stool for late DH actually but it is very useful..
My brother came to stay the other day and he said that we should have kept DM’s walker .Cheeky devil !
