Greetings hipsters and kneeknockers. It is with great pleasure and some surprise that we have reached episode number 4 in this 🧵. Welcome to all.
Onwards and forwards we go. Advice, support, encouragement and everything else available here.

Aveline please get your name on the waiting list- it can always be removed if you have a minor miracle which I doubt.

Aveline Sat 23-Dec-23 14:45:14

The pain seems to come and go. Some days it's absolutely fine then others it's back. Nothing in particular seems to trigger it.

Birthto110 Mon 25-Dec-23 19:25:12

My knee replacement was recently and it's really hurting - I wanted to get rid of the pain and be more mobile - but guess it's early days.

Aveline Mon 25-Dec-23 19:48:07

How long since the op Birthto110?

Charleygirl5 Mon 25-Dec-23 21:20:19

Birthtol10 if it is of any help I was in a lot of pain 6 weeks after my last knee replacement. My GP allowed me to have a few tablets of a morphine derivative and I was soon fine.

Talking of pain relief, I've been taking hydrocodeine since my TKR almost six weeks ago and I've started to reduce the number of times a day I take it. But I'm having some awful withdrawal symptoms, hot flushes, windy pains in bowel and in my chest. Maybe I'm coming off them too swiftly. I went from 4 a day to 3 ,2 and then nothing. Anyone worked out how to avoid this? Some sites online say withdraw over months not weeks.

Aveline Tue 26-Dec-23 07:44:47

I was so scared of those tablets that I never took them Diggingdoris. That's not very helpful to you though. Sorry. I found that paracetamol worked very well for me. Could they help you?

Birthto110 Tue 26-Dec-23 13:06:27

Interested in what Aveline says about not overdoing exercise after a TKR and clinical evidence to support this - I am walking, some weight bearing with crutches etc but felt pressure and guilt for not managing more exercise due to the pain.

Aveline Tue 26-Dec-23 13:27:40

It was such a relief to just dismiss the pressure and guilt about exercising. Of course walking is exercising so it's good to walk about doing everyday activities plus maybe add in an extra walk round the house, then maybe, walk round the garden, introduce some steps etc. Take it easy. My consultant completely agreed with me and the physio wrote that I was taking over my own rehabilitation. I was and it worked.
Interestingly, the hospital I was in specialised in orthopaedic surgery and when I was in for my hip op I was surprised to find that the out patients physio dept had been closed down and physios made redundant. There were two for in patients to show newly operated knee and hip patients how to use sticks (no crutches) and go up and down stairs but that was all.

I am bumping this up before we fall off the page.

Morning everyone, just letting you know that my news is I have Covid fir the second time which really messed up my Christmas 🎅 but if this goes to the top of Active then it’s all (sort of) worth while.
Christmas greetings to you all. Keep well and here we go……post!

Aveline Wed 27-Dec-23 12:56:28

Oh no! What bad luck *silverlining48". Hope you're not feeling too bad and recover completely in record time.

silverlining48 Wed 27-Dec-23 16:37:39

I am not feeling too bad Aveline, it’s early days. Just had a bath and hair wash and though I can’t stop sneezing don’t feel too bad.

silverlining48 Wed 27-Dec-23 16:39:27

Here we are again…down at the bottom of Active.

Hoping someone can help me. Had hip replacement July 22. This week I have noticed I'm getting pain in my outer thigh in that leg. Should I be worried. I have had a busy week moved house on the 18th then out Xmas eve, Xmas day and boxing day so been sitting on different chairs and driving more than usual. Fingers crossed its just the extra activity. Obviously trying to get a gp appt will be difficult if I need to see anyone.
Just wondered if anyone else notices pain when straying from usual activities or do I need to get it Checked out???

Charleygirl5 Wed 27-Dec-23 19:11:12

Before attempting to make a GP appointment try and get your life back to normal. Maybe you have just been overdoing the activity. I would think you need to spend a few days in your own home and not gallivanting here there and everywhere.

Is New Year going to be similar to Christmas? At least you have identified the problem if it is one. Have a lie-in tomorrow!

Aveline Thu 28-Dec-23 07:46:47

There's a long ligament down your outer thigh. Maybe you've strained that? Give it a chance to settle.

silverlining48 Fri 29-Dec-23 13:28:05

How are things today travels.? Hope you managed to rest the last couple of days and things are better.
I still have Covid and so does my dh now so he’s in bed and I am …. Sitting here thinking I am a bit peckish. Oh dear oh dear. 😅 have a good day all.

Charleygirl5 Fri 29-Dec-23 13:46:51

Please do not blink or you will miss us being close to the top of the page.

I also did little in the way of exercise and I am fine! The pain was bad enough without me making it 10 times worse.

travelsafar Fri 29-Dec-23 22:00:12

Hi silverlinning48. Not too bad today thank goodness. Am getting back into my normal routine and that definitely helps pairwise and mentally. I didn't realise how stressed and tired I was with the house move then Christmas right behind it!!! Even managed to make a cauliflower cheese from scratch today. I also went shopping. Fingers crossed it was all the extra activity I have had recently. It was hard work clearing a 3 bed house, garden, shed and greenhouse so my body has been working really hard for the past few weeks. Now I can relax and enjoy my new one bed flat😊

travelsafar Fri 29-Dec-23 22:00:59

Painwise not pairwise!!!

I hope you’re feeling better today silverlining. My new hip is 17 days old and I’m gradually trying to increase the walking. Dd1 wants me to have more physio as she thinks it will help, but I’m doing the exercises given to me by the hospital physiotherapist and am not sure what else will help? I guess I’ll go along with her suggestion & hope it helps. Has anyone any advice please?

Aveline Sat 30-Dec-23 11:38:26

Do not overdo the exercises!! It's so easy to set up inflammation and that leads to all sorts of problems. Ice, elevate and walk around. Just walking is what your knees are for so is the ideal exercise.

Redcar Sat 30-Dec-23 12:47:38

Thanks Aveline, I’m very wary of doing too much! I’m trying to strike a balance, with walking & the exercises. I’m trusting in the nhs physiotherapist to give best advice!

cornergran Sat 30-Dec-23 12:54:01

A surgery physio recently told me to always listen to my body when prescribed exercises and it is ok not to do any exercise which aggravates. Seems sensible to me!
