Greetings hipsters and kneeknockers. It is with great pleasure and some surprise that we have reached episode number 4 in this 🧵. Welcome to all.
Onwards and forwards we go. Advice, support, encouragement and everything else available here.

Seen by surgeon yesterday who says I need to have both knees done. So am being referred for pre op assessment.
So thus thread is very helpful!

A few years ago one hospital was giving away perfectly usable frames, perching chairs etc. A friend and I helped ourselves and luckily my garden shed had been cleared so that is where mine sits. I needed them when I had my last knee replaced and I think next on the cards will be my hips.

That hospital is now collecting similar items because amazingly they are short of money.

That was a fabulous day out you had Mizuna it was well worth the pain to get such a good result.

Mizuna, thanks for your uplifting post. I can feel your joy. Glad you had such a lovely day.

Also impressed with all your aids and happy they will be used for the next hipster or kneester.
Well done flowers

Aveline Tue 08-Oct-24 09:01:14

Great to hear Mizuna. It's quite a day when all the paraphernalia is not needed any more.

Mizuna Tue 08-Oct-24 08:15:16

14 weeks since my knee replacement and it's as if I've never had it done except for the faint scar. Last week, suddenly, I woke with no soreness at all after sleeping so I ventured to Plymouth, my nearest city, by train and strode for miles around the streets like a young thing, revelling in the wide pavements and lack of obstructions compared with where I live. No-one noticed my jubilation. 😂

Yesterday the NHS collected my crutches, perching stool, raised loo seat and toilet frame and I celebrated with a coffee. 😄

It hasn't been easy compared with my hip replacements but for me it's been a life-changing operation. All the best to those waiting and thank you silverlining for this invaluable thread.

Keep on phoning nannytopsy, it’s all you can do and one day your luck will change. Make sure you let us know when it does.

Aveline Tue 08-Oct-24 07:52:14

Fingers crossed for you Nannytopsy

Nannytopsy Tue 08-Oct-24 00:04:22

I phone most weeks, said I will accept a cancellation with any consultant and have had three pre op assessments because they expire after 12 weeks. It seems a waste of their resources and it’s a 45 mile drive for us!
I am now banking on Christmas week! 🤣

Redcar Mon 07-Oct-24 17:33:34

nannytopsy I’m so sorry you’re still waiting for a date, so disheartening for you. I hope you hear soon.

Charleygirl5 Mon 07-Oct-24 16:06:15

Nannytopsy I agree with silverlining and you should ring the consultant's secretary stating you are so desperate you would accept a cancellation.

Unfortunately there is the pre-op assessment first so that can knock out cancellations. Just let your voice be heard.

silverlining48 Mon 07-Oct-24 15:10:43

Sorry to hear you are still waiting nannytopsy. All I can say is keep phoning them every couple of weeks. I have done this a few times recently, for other reasons, and have been offered an appointment on the spot, sometimes as close as the following week.

Nannytopsy Mon 07-Oct-24 14:50:04

It’s 12 months since I first saw the surgeon and I still don’t have a date, so don’t hold your breath Loopylou. Every month they say there may be a date next month … November should be sorted early this week so I am hanging on the phone call!

My knee has improved so much over the past few days and was ok after a long car journey yesterday ( I usually hobble for ages when I get out of the car). But, blow me I knocked my knee against the stair wall last night then, a few minutes later knocked it against something in the bedroom. It’s also the knee that my dog always crashes into when she has a bonkers few minutes. It’s almost as if it has a sign on it saying hit here, It never happens to my good knee.

silverlining48 Mon 07-Oct-24 11:53:07

Oh dear, isn’t it something when we need to go to drama school in order to play the role of people in pain. When we actually are in pain. It’s come to this .
Hope your appointment goes well loopieloo.
How are things georgie? Hope you are getting on ok.

Aveline Mon 07-Oct-24 08:28:21

As I once painfully slowly climbed the stairs to the consulting room I looked up and the GP was watching me over the bannisters. He took me seriously after seeing me quite unaware that I was being watched

Charleygirl5 Sun 06-Oct-24 22:46:57

Take your time walking into the GP's room, you are in a lot of pain. Sigh after you sit down as you are pleased to get some pain relief.

For once do not put your best foot forward, good luck.

MayBee70 Sun 06-Oct-24 18:26:38

Don’t wear any make. Go there looking as awful as possible!

Charleygirl5 Sun 06-Oct-24 18:10:26

I agree, get on the list asap and say you would be happy to take a cancellation.

Aveline Sun 06-Oct-24 09:45:22

Good luck loopyloo. Pile it on. Cry if necessary. If you're at the stage of seeing a surgeon you must be nearly there.

loopyloo Sun 06-Oct-24 08:54:03

Yes thanks. Seeing my surgeon tomorrow am going to plead for a tkr
Am very limited now.

Aveline Sun 06-Oct-24 08:42:29

Good idea Charleygirl.

Charleygirl5 Sat 05-Oct-24 23:36:00

I am bumping this in case somebody needs information.

Charleygirl5 Sat 05-Oct-24 08:47:47

Maybee please do not leave the surgery too long because it makes it more difficult for the surgeon and you want and need the best outcome.

I looked up that gel on Amazon and nearly fainted when I saw the price. I wondered if it would work which held me back so I ordered a much cheaper one to start,

Aveline Sat 05-Oct-24 06:45:54

No it's not easy georgiejg but it's well worth it. I'll bet you're glad it's done. Sounds like you're taking rehab easy. That's the best way.sunshine

georgiejg Fri 04-Oct-24 22:44:43

Had my 1st tkr in June, 2nd one 11 days ago. They say no two are the same but mine seem to be following the same route. I kept the physio to what I was able to do, you can't expect a painful swollen bruised knee to bend much, it was better when the dressing came off. A little improvement every day. I was lucky that the NHS reffered me to a private hospital, it is at least an hour and a half away but I was just grateful to get them done, pills, rest, ice and gentle exercise worked last time. It's not easy.
