Greetings hipsters and kneeknockers. It is with great pleasure and some surprise that we have reached episode number 4 in this 🧵. Welcome to all.
Onwards and forwards we go. Advice, support, encouragement and everything else available here.

I hope so too MayBe. Glad it’s helping manage your pain.

Well, having used Flexiseq for two weeks now my knee has felt better today than it has for a long time. A friend who recently had a TKR tried it at one time and it didn’t help her at all. I’ve had this bad knee for many years and it does sometimes improve so I’m hoping that I can put the TKR on hold again. I think that giving up on having baths so I don’t have to kneel down has helped, too. I’ve just bought two more tubes ( it’s horribly expensive but my partner gets a Boots discount) so I hope it’s the Flexiseq that’s helping!

Our bath came out quite neatly and the new shower tray fitted in to the space it left. The tiler did a great job matching up all the tiles. The worst aspect to this was his singing along to the radio!

Your old boiler is a good 12 years younger than my current boiler Redcar. It might be sensible to consider that if and when we change to a shower.

Redcar Sun 29-Sept-24 15:38:18

I had difficulty getting to the shower over the bath, so two years ago I bit the bullet and had the bath taken out and a walk in shower fitted. I had the old boiler (23 years old) replaced at the same time. I’m very pleased with it all, I know I’d not be able to get into a bath now.

Thanks Charley. Already have the possibility of a shower over the bath but I don’t use that.
It will take me a while to decide because I really much prefer a bath. 🛀 but think the time is coming. Will check back when I decide.

Charleygirl5 Sun 29-Sept-24 14:40:41

From memory mine took a week and thank goodness I have a downstairs loo although that was a problem during the night.

Please do not have a shower put over your bath, it is not 100% safe and you could slip. If you feel you need a shower I think it best to bite the bullet and get it done.

Please mention if you do decide because there are some do's and dont's which I did not discover until too late.

silverlining48 Sun 29-Sept-24 12:22:08

If I have a shower put in I woukd have to have the bathroom redone completely with tiles and flooring etc so I imagine it to be a messy job.
I can kneel for the few seconds before I haul myself up but know the clock is ticking.

Charleygirl5 Mon 23-Sept-24 23:59:08

Aveline I agree. it is the best thing I have done for many years. I have a stool in my shower and occasionally I need to use it.

I do miss having a bath but it was like sinking the Titanic and then I could not get out because I could not kneel. Now my water is metered so a shower is cheaper.

Getting rid of the bath and having the shower fitted was quick and easy.

Last year I had a new central heating gas combi boiler installed and changed my shower to electric. In retrospect, I should have left it.

Tempting providence re the weather in Cornwall Mizuna!
When our bath was replaced by a walk in shower the job was done quickly and well. No long drawn out mess. It was well worth having done.

silverlining48 Mon 23-Sept-24 13:59:08

Well done Mizuna, glad you are doing so well.

silverlining48 Mon 23-Sept-24 13:57:18

I have always preferred a bath and can still use my bath, get in and out of it, it’s the sitting down and getting up which is the problem.
I flop into it, so keep the water a few inches high as I make a huge splash, and run the extra water in. When it’s finished I turn around onto my knees and use the sides of the bath to help get me up.
My nightmare is that one day I will get stuck and have to be winched out by the fire brigade….
I don’t know how long this can continue, or whether I should bite the bullet and get a shower in rather than leave it too long and have to deal with all the mess a new-bathroom makes.

Mizuna Mon 23-Sept-24 13:56:15

Thanks Charleygirl, I'll be fine. I had the other knee done early one February. The only thing that keeps me in is snow on top of ice and that's as rare as hens' teeth here in Cornwall. 😁

Charleygirl5 Mon 23-Sept-24 09:09:04

Mizuna you have done incredibly well in the 3 months since surgery. You are now almost set up for winter but if there is frost or ice please stay indoors as it is not worth the risk.

Mizuna Mon 23-Sept-24 06:48:13

It's 12 weeks since my TKR - where did that time go! - and I'm very mobile, no sticks, just a bit of soreness when I bend my leg after a night's sleep. I still feel that my thigh needs strengthening but I know that will come the more I walk.

Attached is a pic of the flexible gel packs I've used for all four of my joint replacements; they refreeze very quickly. They're now useful in my cool box. 😁

Aveline Mon 23-Sept-24 06:03:43

MayBee70 I loved long baths too but no more alas. If I ever win the Premium Bonds I dream of having a beautiful sunken bath with steps down into it. Obviously with staff to fill it and clean it of course. Those rose petals don't clear themselves away. Unlimited hot water too. It's a pity we live in a flat. I doubt my downstairs neighbour would allow my bath to protrude through her ceiling!

MayBee70 Mon 23-Sept-24 03:15:22

Thanks cornergran. I’ll check that one out.

cornergran Mon 23-Sept-24 01:23:32

Hello maybee. I used the Vive knee ice wrap from Amazon. It stays on the knee, is comfortable as it’s adjustable and the flexible ice packs fit nicely. I bought extra ice packs so I always had some frozen. A friend has borrowed it since and was very pleased at the difference it made.

From memory the instructions say no more than 15 minutes at a time. Please don’t worry too much, we all find our way through.

MayBee70 Sun 22-Sept-24 23:29:07

I’ve looked at ice packs on Amazon. Is there a particular one that people recommend ( I have got my trusty bag of peas). I’m giving Flexiseq another go having tried it a few years ago. Going to restart doing the pre op exercises. I’m resigned to having showers from now on ( I love having a long soaky bath) as I can’t get in and out of the bath without kneeling down in the bath. Looked at Revitive but I can’t use the one I wanted to get because you can’t put the tens machine bits near to varicose veins. Need to strengthen the muscles round my knee. Think I’ll go and see my osteopath in a couple of weeks time when I go home.

silverlining48 Sat 21-Sept-24 22:33:45

Hi all, how are you grankle? Hope you are progressing well.
How are you Maybee?

I am popping into my neighbour tomorrow to compare notes ( and drink wine) as we both coincidentally went to the same area of Italy the other week.
Enjoy what’s left of the weekend.

Aveline Wed 18-Sept-24 08:53:05

Disagree re static exercise. Legs made for walking so just walk between times of icing and elevating.

cornergran Wed 18-Sept-24 07:56:08

That should be charley, apologies, iPad has a mind of its own!

cornergran Wed 18-Sept-24 07:55:09

Agree about ice packs. Combined with elevation they help swelling to subside. Charlie is right about the exercises. Look on line or ask a physio for advice. It really is worth it.

Aveline Wed 18-Sept-24 06:20:50

No need for Revive. However, ice packs are really helpful post surgery.

Charleygirl5 Wed 18-Sept-24 02:18:48

I think you will be wasting your money because you should not use it post surgery because over time it will loosen the cement holding your new joint together. Quads and straight leg raising are what you need to be doing.
