Retinal detachment symptoms

As Aveline says, a dark patch or feeling of a curtain coming down are symptoms of a detached retina - I only had a hole in mine.

I had the flashing light and floaters in my right eye several years ago and was told by an optician that it happens when the gel changes as we age and pulls away from the retina. However, the floaters were increasing so I made a hospital appointment (I had private health insurance then) and the gel had pulled away so quickly that it had made a hole in the retina. Laser treatment couldn’t repair it so I had surgery to have it repaired with a scleral buckle. A couple of years later I had the flashing light in the other eye but no I’ll effects.

Snap Loons. After my cataract ops one eye after the other began to have the flashing lights and floaters. First time NHS24 sent me to A&E where the Dr made an appointment for me at the Eye Hospital the next day. I was thoroughly examined and given info about PVD which seems to be very common. I'd never heard of it. Two weeks later when the other eye started I went to the local optometrist (the course of action round here). Same again. He told me I was at additional risk as I was very short sighted and had recent cataract surgery.
I must say it was a shock and a whole new worry I hadn't anticipated.
I gather that a large dark patch or the feeling of a curtain coming down are retinal detachment symptoms. The Dr was very blasé about it. Apparently it's fixable with lasers. Easy for them to be blasé!

I have just been diagnosed with Posterior vitreous detachment. Whilst it is not serious, the optician told me that 10 - 20% of people who have this will experience a detached retina within 6 weeks. Reading about this, all the information says to go to A&E straight away. Has anyone on here suffered a detached retina and how do you know? I am seeing flashing lights and the occasional floater but is a detached retina really obvious? and what would they do at the hospital if I did have one? I do feel as though this is a ticking time bomb...
