Anxiety particularly at night

Hello everyone, I just wondered if anyone had any tips to help. I periodically go through phases of really bad anxiety at night and spend the nights awake. I get up and make a drink and appear to calm down but as soon as I’m back in bed it returns. I am going to see my son in Australia next week so my sleeping pattern will be even worse. I am worrying about going as I am leaving my husband behind (2nd marriage). I don’t know why I am worrying but if I’m not careful the anxiety will spoil the whole visit! I have been looking at a herbal supplement called Sleepee which seems to have a lot of good reviews. It takes up to 14 days to work as it boosts the melatonin levels. Has anyone tried it? Alternatively CBD seems to be mentioned a lot but it is a minefield as to which one works!

You can buy melatonin here in Australia at the chemists but it isn’t cheap. I have found it doesn’t work that well ,either. What works for me are anti histamines which also stop you wanting to cough or snuffle at night. Failing that, prescription drugs but that would be a lst resort.

I’m widowed, so have my radio on low all night. LBC with a boring broadcaster fits the bill. I also listen to old Steve Allen podcasts, I like his voice and very lighthearted.

If sharing a bedroom whilst away, I just put one earphone in for comfort, but I must have something to send me off!

Thank you for your suggestions. I will definitely try a couple. For those listening to podcasts, do you listen on earphones and which ones are comfortable for sleeping in? I am actually worrying about sleeping!! To a vicious circle as the worrying stops you from sleeping!!

I have a similar problem, and can really empathise. When I find myself not able to sleep, plug in my Kindle, it'll go flat otherwise, no headphones as single, and listen to bite size audio classics, get sleepy, and other free book readings on you tube. Can guarantee you'll miss the endings. Hope you find some sleep. Worrying
, perhaps a GP visit will help to get to the bottom of the cause. X

Sue Breton has two books - Why Worry and Don't Panic, both are excellent. Dr Claire Weekes books are also excellent - Self Help For Your Nerves which help with anxiety and panic attacks. Dr Weekes also has audio resources, one talks specifically about going on holiday. There is a Claire Weekes website but you may be able to get the books in your library.
Rescue Remedy Night is a Bach Flower remedy that can assist with sleep.
It is so easy to say dont worry but so difficult to do despite knowing that worrying is pointless.

I have to have a podcast on at night. Unfortunately last night I listened to a The Rest is History podcast about Christmas but it then moved on to the next podcast which was about the rise of Hitler. Even though I was asleep by then I must have been listening to it subliminally which is why I woke up feeling exhausted. I listened to it because my other favourite podcast, Hypnogoria alternates between children’s fantasy and horror and I didn’t want to listen to the latter.I think I would have been safer with HP Lovecraft shock

It can help to put the specific worry down on paper plus plan A, B and C for dealing with it. Then put the paper away. Can save your brain from going over and over the same things.

I can empathise with you, I've suffered with sleepless nights for years. It's usually something I'm stressed/ anxious about. I also suffer with arthritis pain , which is worse at night. I use amitriptyline and drink herbal tea etc , sometimes it works, sometimes not . I do find my audible books very relaxing

Night time is the worst for anxiety, I find. Thoughts go round and round in your head. Perhaps, OP, your anxiety about the holiday will go away once you’re there. I hope so.

It's so easy to tell people not to worry. Not helpful at all. I'm a very big worrier. Telling myself not to worry doesn't help at all.

My DD is right, though - it doesn't change anything and you have to keep telling yourself that.

I hope she lets me know when she gets there .....

Phenergan/Promethazine as a gentle antihistamine can be beneficial for anxiety. Alternatively there's some great resources on No Panic and a crisis number if experiencing heightened anxiety to help bring you down a little bit, it plays a recorded message. 01952 680835

Sounds like a panic attack. G.P. can prescribe a beta blocker to help calm you down. Also Sleepeaze will aid sleep

I'm a worrier, especially if I wake in the night but try to remind myself of my mother's saying "Don't meet trouble halfway".

When I mentioned to one DD that I worried (about her, amongst other things) she said "Don't worry about me! In fact, don't worry about anything, it's pointless and just causes stress. If you can change something then do, but if not, what is the point of worrying about it?".

I have this frequently, I am fine all day but as soon as I get into bed the worries begin. Have you tries listening to Mr Mosley’s BBC programme on sleep? You can get it on BBC Sounds, it is useful, he has lots of tips. Breathing exercises sometimes work for me, if not I listen to the radio, something boring! I understand there is a sleep podcast of soothing noise which I am going to try.

I find phenerghan work for me. Prescribed by gp but can be bought over the counter, Night nurse works well too,

Think your sleep is being disturbed by thinking about your trip I know if I am going away my sleep suffers,

Try the sleepee but if you see your Dr they will prescribe melatonin now. Google sleep hygiene. I’m sure you already know it all though flowers

Can you buy melatonin in Australia? I’m pretty sure you can buy it in America. I couldn’t sleep last night as my mind was racing.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Ask yourself which comes first the anxiety or something to worry about
If it’s the anxiety have something lined up on your iPad to listen to. Just interesting chatter nothing too loud nothing funny It may just occupy brain activity and stop you finding something to worry about Especially if you don’t worry about it during the day
Oh also check any change of meds

For a quick nighttime fix try Boots Sleepeaze, they do two kinds, one that you take one only, another that you can take two.I use the latter one but only take one.They really work and you get a great night’s sleep, non addictive btw .
