Bowel Cancer Screening Test positive

I had a routine test recently which came back positive. I’m quite an anxious person when it comes to health matters so I’m not coping at all well at the moment.

There is a family history of bowel cancer (my brother was diagnosed10 years ago and was successfully treated) and I’m in the higher risk group being 66 years old so this adds to the worry.

I’m feeling generally quite well but have IBS so it’s difficult to say whether I have other symptoms.

I have to have a colonoscopy and there’s usually a two week wait, but have been told they’re running behind so may be up to six weeks, so I’m considering booking in for a private test as I can’t cope with the waiting

I wondered if anyone had any positive experiences they can share with me that would ease my mind?

I’d be very, very grateful.

MissAdventure, no I wasn't busy at all and have no idea why I’ve suddenly started to wobble. Maybe because the date is getting closer?

I’ve started to take Kalms so hoping these will help.

I didn’t think you were making light by the way 😊

MissAdventure Sun 18-Feb-24 17:18:28

I've known a good few people who claim Kalms get them through stressful times
Fingers crossed, they work.
I'm a terrible coward, so I'm petrified of any procedure, let alone the results.

It's a known thing, "scanxiety" but I'm not sure anyone has found the answer to making it less stressful.

NanaK54 it’s so kind of you to remember 😊

I’ve just put the jug of doom into the fridge ready for the first dose at 7.00.

I must admit I’m starting to get properly anxious now.

NotSpaghetti Tue 20-Feb-24 16:50:56

Good luck for tomorrow. You’ve got this!

Sillyoldbird Tue 20-Feb-24 17:53:08

Thanks MissAdventure and LucyAnna 🥰

Labradora Tue 20-Feb-24 18:34:32

The jug of doom is the worst bit in my opinion. Give me the Humming Machine anyday. I hold my nose and sort of pour it down my throat , trying not to taste it. Try and think of the good it's doing. Your bowels will be all pink and clean on the inside when your "session" in the bathroom , to put it politely , is over.
Best of luck for tomorrow

Grandyma Tue 20-Feb-24 19:32:22

Good luck for tomorrow. I’ll be thinking of you 💐

Sillyoldbird Tue 20-Feb-24 20:01:35

I have to say, this bowel prep isn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

I expected something, err we’ll ‘livelier’ All very gentle up to now.

Be prepared, just in case.

Wishing you well sillyoldbird. Soon be over.

Katyj Wed 21-Feb-24 05:58:12

Good luck for today. Hope your prep has done its stuff and you’re feeling good. At least it won’t be long now. The waiting is the worst.shamrock

NotSpaghetti Wed 21-Feb-24 06:52:29

Soon be over!
Thinking of you. flowers

Well, I have piles.

But thank you, thank you, thank you for the support which was just incredible. It sounds a bit of a cliche, but I genuinely am so grateful to every one of you.

To summarise events since yesterday, the preparation was easy (apart from the devil’s brew 🤢) with no major toilet explosions.

The procedure itself was a breeze, sure I could have done it without the sedative. But most of all, the hospital staff, without exception, were fantastic.

The only downside was that I got biscuits and I really needed the toast

Now to do something about the life-long anxiety problem.

Here’s a massive, virtual, sloppy kiss and a hug for each and every single one of you. 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘

I bet you've never been so pleased to have piles!

So glad it went ok.

You were very brave!

Smileless2012 Wed 21-Feb-24 13:44:28

So pleased it went well Sillyoldbird. As MissA has said you've been very brave and just for getting through the procedure, but for sharing your experience here too flowers.

What lovely news and although you are still in shock probably the relief when it sinks in will be so good.
My S’s friend went through similar two weeks ago and I don’t think she really believes yet that she doesn’t have something sinister.
Get help from your GP for the anxiety.
