Lots of celebrities, rugby clubs and of course dairy farmers are extolling the benefits of full fat milk.

My daughter’s friend is to be on GB news this evening talking about this, she and her husband have a large dairy farm.

We eat full fat natural yoghurt, I make my own butter from full fat cream but I just cannot do full fat milk in tea.

Since having to drink milk at school I just cannot drink milk alone or on cereal.

My mother used to buy gold top milk and poured the cream from the top in her coffee every morning🤮

Are you skimmed, semi skimmed or full fat fans?

Would you be willing to change for the health benefits?

I had to read the OP again to remind myself why we were discussing this at all!
It was because celebs were extolling the virtues of full fat milk on GB news. Well really! grin

All in all I think we like to justify what we do and why. It's food for thought.

I call myself a vegetarian because I don't eat meat but I eat eggs and dairy. I only shop organic and fairtrade so this takes most of the guilt away.

I knew I had read that info at some point.

Skim milk is one of the richest food sources of calcium, providing around 325 mg per cup. This is even higher than the calcium content of whole milk, which is 306 mg per cup

Oat or soya. I've never forgotten the pitiful sound of the cows on the farm next door.Bellowing day and night for their babies who'd been taken away so people could have their milk.

Same here. Aside from having a dairy intolerance I just can't bring myself to drink milk which wasn't intended for humans 😢

I am same, like skimmed in drinks but enjoy drinking a glass of ice cold full fat milk so both in my fridge,no semi skimmed

Bodach Thu 22-Feb-24 20:32:46

As a child, my milk often came warm from the cow, and I have generally stuck to full-fat ever since. Now I take only tiny drops in tea or coffee; lots with my porridge or other cereal, and every so often a glassful cold from the fridge. Writing about it has made me thirsty, so...

Used to buy orange top pre covid but now semi.
I too can't drink full flat due to having to drink it as a child, the milk having sat outside all morning 🤢

Always have proper full fat butter, but cannot abide anything other than skimmed in my tea; don't mind full fat or semi-skimmed in coffee. I normally get the Cravendale skimmed, as it keeps well.

I grew up on a farm, drinking full fat Jersey milk. I wasn't so keen on it when the cows were in the kale field because I swore I could taste it in the milk. I drank my school milk and anybody else's if they didn't want it! In my adult life, I drank semi skimmed milk on my breakfast cereal and in my tea and coffee. 3 years ago I became dairy intolerant - all of it. So now I use oatmilk. And I so miss the cream teas, the cheeses, the cream cakes ...

We use the BOB milk ( best of both) it is skimmed milk but tastes like Semi, it also froths when we use the frothing wand on our coffee maker, which normal skimmed milk doesn't. DH has it with his porridge and We both have an occasional glass. We don't like normal skimmed milk. If we are out for a coffee , I don't think to ask for a "skinny" version and just take what is given.

Amalegra Thu 22-Feb-24 16:36:16

I always drink skimmed milk as I don’t like the rich creamy taste of full fat or semi in my hot drinks. Don’t like any sort of milk cold. Use semi or full fat for cooking. The calcium content is actually higher in skimmed milk which is useful post menopause or on certain medications. I accept that other vitamins etc may be missing from skimmed but I can make them up by eating other things. Often just a question of taste isn’t it? I’m a little tired of being told what we should and shouldn’t be eating/drinking! The aim is a good balanced diet, surely, which can be achieved in various ways to keep you healthy!

40 years of setting a good example to kids and grandkids and now I’ve gone back to full cream……glorious

Missiseff Thu 22-Feb-24 16:28:38

Semi-skimmed, I care about my arteries

Milest0ne Thu 22-Feb-24 15:36:35

Our school milk supply was stopped when there was a radiation leak at Sellafield resulting all milk in the area being destroyed. We had Horlicks tables as a substitute. I never liked horlicks since.
I have heard that milk is better than water for rehydration after exercise .

Full fat. It's the natural product. Take out the fat and the body cannot metabolise some of the nutrients, for instance calcium, I believe. The health 'problems' that have been associated with full fat are questionable, according to many professionals. All this messing with nature is, in my opinion, one of many causes of food intolerances, allergies and other ills

Gwenisgreat Thu 22-Feb-24 14:14:51

I'm a no milk fan!

Annma Thu 22-Feb-24 13:52:20

We have semi skimmmed milk because it is lower in fat than whole milk.Skimmed milk is a bit thin, full fat is the tastiest.I must admit homemade rice pudding made with Jersey milk is sumptuous.

4allweknow Thu 22-Feb-24 13:41:19

Semi skimmed all the way unless cooking and recipe requires otgerwise. Full fat is just to fatty/oily texture for me.

Astitchintime Thu 22-Feb-24 13:18:15

Semi-skimmed here but I do like full fat when I am making a mild pudding.
Maybe I should revert to full fat all the time for the A. and D vitamins that it contains - I am in the early stages of osteoporosis.

SueEH Thu 22-Feb-24 13:14:37

I’m soya 🤣 I can’t abide cows’ milk. I’m not allergic to it but quite intolerant and don’t like how it makes me feel. I try to use soya yogurt but am ok with none full fat, and don’t eat much cheese.

Romola Thu 22-Feb-24 13:04:17

We used to get semi-skimmed, but when DH was recovering from his oesophagectomy the dietician advised him to have lots of rich food as he had lost weight and needed to re-establish normal eating.
We went on having full-fact milk, it is much nicer on cereal and for cooking. And we went back to butter.
DH had a very good quality of life until he died 11 years later at the age of 87. And my weight hasn't changed at all.
But I am beginning to have a problem with dairy food with regard to cattle and methane.
