Anyone had any experience of it?

crazyH Tue 09-Apr-24 10:00:55

I’m with you Grammareto. I read somewhere that women who were renowned for their beauty, try to hang on to it, any which way. They find it difficult to grow old gracefully.

Grammaretto Tue 09-Apr-24 09:56:13

I do know a woman in her 80s who had a mouthful of implants spending her kids' inheritance.
Honestly I would prefer to spend that kind of money, if I had it, on something else!
This woman must have been a great beauty in her youth as she is tall, slim and elegant still.

Wow! The cost! Sounds like it was a horrible experience too. I'm sure you're glad it's all over tickingbird - at least I hope it is

And petrol on top! An hour each way. 🤣
I assume it a typo.

maddyone Tue 09-Apr-24 09:06:35

Good gracious, £250,000. Just wow.

Urmstongran Tue 09-Apr-24 08:58:18

Did you really mean almost a quarter of a million ££s tickingbird? 😮

Additionally, the costs mentioned are extortionate. I’ve had extensive work done taking two years and all backcteeth upper and lower plus 4 veneers on front teeth - £200000. I shopped around and this dentist was recommended. It was an hour’s drive there and then back again but I’m extremely happy with the results.

I have just finished almost two years of this!

Sinus lifts, bone grafts top and bottom and gum graft.

All went well and no bone was taken from me so I assume synthetic bone was used. It’s not as bad as it sounds BUT the gum graft is horrendous. Not the actual procedure but the after effects. If it’s what’s known as a free gum graft the pain from the donor site, which is your hard palate is truly awful. They can place some kind of ‘plaster’ over the donor site but only if you have teeth to affix it to. I didn’t as they had been removed so I had a raw open wound for a week. The dentist did give me some gel to put on which did alleviate the pain for a time and after a few days I used some Bonjela - wow I nearly went through the roof! It definitely numbed it but the initial pain was excruciating.

Speak to your dentist. The bone grafts and implants should be fine but the free gum graft (which is the worst type) is very painful during the healing stage due to the donor site being raw inside the mouth.

crazyH I am 73. Both top and bottom gaps would have been in my smile line.

Grammaretto Mon 08-Apr-24 23:47:32

I couldn't afford implants so when my 2 lower front teeth broke, I had a small denture fitted. It isn't wonderful but I have got used to it. At my age, 75, I can only imagine adding more teeth.

maddyone Mon 08-Apr-24 23:30:00

The only bone graft I had was a powdery type of stuff that was applied to encourage bone growth. It worked.

maddyone Mon 08-Apr-24 23:29:00

£27,000 for an implant? My cost about £5000.

crazyH Mon 08-Apr-24 22:37:19

Just curious - you are all probably under 70 . I’m over 70 and certainly wouldn’t spend £5000 for an implant I have gaps in my lower jaw but it’s not obvious. I eat, chew, no problem.

25Avalon Mon 08-Apr-24 22:28:20

I thought the grafts were from other parts of your jaw, mistakenly it seems, and would need to be done two or three times over a 7 month period, as my gum was deep enough but not wide enough. It was a back tooth I had extracted (well it was falling apart tbh) thinking a transplant would be soooo simple. Decided not to have it done in the end, couldn’t face 7+ months of dentist visits and it was a back tooth. Saved £5,000!

I had three implants put in a couple of years ago - very simple procedures no bone graft needed.

Last Thursday I had two teeth removed (lower molar and pre-molar) prior to having bone augmentation and two implants and it’s a very different story. The molar was cut in two and removed in about fifteen minutes, but the little pre-molar took ninety minutes to extract and four days later I’m still taking painkillers every two hours and there is still a lot of facial swelling. The teeth needed to be removed due to recurring abscesses and my dentist had to do quite a bit of tidying up of the gum and bone to prepare for the next stage. The appointment time of one and a half hours was supposed to cover extracting two teeth and a socket augmentation procedure using Ethoss (a synthetic material) and an equine collagen fleece. However, we were all exhausted by the time the teeth had finally been taken out so the second stage has been put on hold. I’m going back in two weeks and I can’t say I’m looking forward to it. Altogether it’s going to be at least six months before the implants are in place and the cost is eye watering, but short of leaving a huge gap in my gum I had no real alternative.

Thanks all. That’s encouraging

Oldbat1 Mon 08-Apr-24 20:04:09

Similar to other posters. Had bone graft and was asked if i prefered animal or synthetic. Takes a long time. Started in January and last appt was Sept. Would do it again tomorrow and would describe slight discomfort but not pain. Had a temporary denture which often made me gag but it was my front teeth. It was worth the expense.

dogsmother Mon 08-Apr-24 17:38:51

I did for an implant m. Very expensive however a piece of cake in terms of recovery and now I wish I’d had two!!

Aveline Mon 08-Apr-24 17:16:30

It's a horrendous amount of money shock

annsixty Mon 08-Apr-24 16:55:34

My GD’s bone was taken from her own hip.

HousePlantQueen Mon 08-Apr-24 16:33:51

This is helpful as I have been considering the same procedure. I have a crossing over tooth on my lower jaw, right at the front, and it has thus become rather wobbly. My dentist said that although a partial denture may be feasible for a top row tooth loss, they are not satisfactory for the lower jaw. But, when he started talking about bone grafts, implants etc., I did wonder where the bone came from, now I know thank you. I am still undecided as it is such a lot of money which could pay for a few holidays

Juliet27 Mon 08-Apr-24 16:29:23

Yes Ginny the price tag is certainly another consideration 😱

Juliet27 Mon 08-Apr-24 16:28:39

I just pm’d you karmalady only to find you don’t accept messages. 🙁

granny'sbuttons Mon 08-Apr-24 16:27:24

When I had an implant I needed a bone graft. I was offered bone from animal tissue or synthetic. So if you would prefer synthetic or are vegetarian there is an option.

Juliet27 Mon 08-Apr-24 16:09:09

Thank you both. I have a lot to think about as it will be more than one tooth but it’s about time I started enquiring about options.
