Anyone had any experience of it?

My GD who was born with a very bad cleft had this done when she was 11.
I don’t know if this is the same technique that you are asking about.
She had bone taken from her hip and grafted into her gum to allow teeth to grow,
I don’t know just how it works but it is a minor miracle to me.

Thank you. Yes that sounds similar. I feel I need some work done, maybe implants but I think the gums would need building up. When I had hip replacement surgery I was asked if I would donate the bone, which I did. Maybe I should have kept some for a rainy day!

Sometimes it is needed for implant(s). A friend had it some years ago. Due to my persistent questioning as to the source of the bone, she admitted “from a cow” but added “a Swiss cow”! She was OK with that thought 🤣 It worked well and she still has the implants.
I had an implant without the need of supplementary bone graft. Mine is going well, too. It was a simple, pain free process and I’m no lover of dental work.

Coincidentally DH and myself are going through the implant process and have both had bone grafts. All done without any pain except to our bank accountsmile I also had a previous implant for another tooth a couple of years ago. I have though said we both can’t afford to carry on replacing our teeth with implants and will have to draw the line at some time and go down the denture route. We are both children of 1950s dentistry and, in my case, school dentists.

How long in your case did it take for healing to be enough for the implant? My concern is that this would be for front lower teeth and obviously I wouldn’t want that gap for long. Hopefully there would be some temporary way of covering that"

I am wearing a temporary denture for a single tooth at the front. I need to wear it daily to stop the tooth either side from migrating towards each other. I had a bone graft and the full surgical kit plus antibiotics.

The procedure was 12 days ago. 7 days later the sutures were removed. Next stage in 4 months is the healing abutment at which my gum is again opened up in order to place the abutment. Three weeks after tthat he impressions are taken and I assume another ct scan I go back 2 weeks later for my final abutment and tooth for my final stage

Cleanliness is absolute key and the pre-procedure took into account my mouth hygiene. There was also an initial ct scan to assess my suitability

Pain and swelling increased greatly up to the 24 hour peak and gradually subsided. At 72 hours I was without pain, just discomfort and residual swelling.

I hate wearing my denture and the procedure will be worth every penny to me. The antibiotics wiped me out and I needed to rest for the first 5 days

You will need to go for the initial consultation, everyone is different

Wow. That all sounds very traumatic karmalady. Glad it's all working out.

Juliet27 Mon 08-Apr-24 15:59:37

Thanks karmalady that was the sort of information I was after. I’ve pm’d you.

spottybook Mon 08-Apr-24 16:01:59

Karmalady I had just started a reply to Juliet and you beat me to it. My experience is exactly the same as yours. I had the swelling but fortunately no pain. I also have a temporary denture which I hate.

DH had his bone graft and post insertion at the same time. As you say, all cases are different.

I hope it all goes well for you Juliet27. I admire anyone who opts for the procedure Karmalady. I have decided against, as I'm such a wimp, I know I'm just not courageous enough. The 27K price tag was also a consideration. shock

Juliet27 Mon 08-Apr-24 16:09:09

Thank you both. I have a lot to think about as it will be more than one tooth but it’s about time I started enquiring about options.

granny'sbuttons Mon 08-Apr-24 16:27:24

When I had an implant I needed a bone graft. I was offered bone from animal tissue or synthetic. So if you would prefer synthetic or are vegetarian there is an option.

Juliet27 Mon 08-Apr-24 16:28:39

I just pm’d you karmalady only to find you don’t accept messages. 🙁

Juliet27 Mon 08-Apr-24 16:29:23

Yes Ginny the price tag is certainly another consideration 😱

This is helpful as I have been considering the same procedure. I have a crossing over tooth on my lower jaw, right at the front, and it has thus become rather wobbly. My dentist said that although a partial denture may be feasible for a top row tooth loss, they are not satisfactory for the lower jaw. But, when he started talking about bone grafts, implants etc., I did wonder where the bone came from, now I know thank you. I am still undecided as it is such a lot of money which could pay for a few holidays

annsixty Mon 08-Apr-24 16:55:34

My GD’s bone was taken from her own hip.

Aveline Mon 08-Apr-24 17:16:30

It's a horrendous amount of money shock

dogsmother Mon 08-Apr-24 17:38:51

I did for an implant m. Very expensive however a piece of cake in terms of recovery and now I wish I’d had two!!

Oldbat1 Mon 08-Apr-24 20:04:09

Similar to other posters. Had bone graft and was asked if i prefered animal or synthetic. Takes a long time. Started in January and last appt was Sept. Would do it again tomorrow and would describe slight discomfort but not pain. Had a temporary denture which often made me gag but it was my front teeth. It was worth the expense.

Juliet27 Mon 08-Apr-24 21:29:03

Thanks all. That’s encouraging

I had three implants put in a couple of years ago - very simple procedures no bone graft needed.

Last Thursday I had two teeth removed (lower molar and pre-molar) prior to having bone augmentation and two implants and it’s a very different story. The molar was cut in two and removed in about fifteen minutes, but the little pre-molar took ninety minutes to extract and four days later I’m still taking painkillers every two hours and there is still a lot of facial swelling. The teeth needed to be removed due to recurring abscesses and my dentist had to do quite a bit of tidying up of the gum and bone to prepare for the next stage. The appointment time of one and a half hours was supposed to cover extracting two teeth and a socket augmentation procedure using Ethoss (a synthetic material) and an equine collagen fleece. However, we were all exhausted by the time the teeth had finally been taken out so the second stage has been put on hold. I’m going back in two weeks and I can’t say I’m looking forward to it. Altogether it’s going to be at least six months before the implants are in place and the cost is eye watering, but short of leaving a huge gap in my gum I had no real alternative.

I thought the grafts were from other parts of your jaw, mistakenly it seems, and would need to be done two or three times over a 7 month period, as my gum was deep enough but not wide enough. It was a back tooth I had extracted (well it was falling apart tbh) thinking a transplant would be soooo simple. Decided not to have it done in the end, couldn’t face 7+ months of dentist visits and it was a back tooth. Saved £5,000!

crazyH Mon 08-Apr-24 22:37:19

Just curious - you are all probably under 70 . I’m over 70 and certainly wouldn’t spend £5000 for an implant I have gaps in my lower jaw but it’s not obvious. I eat, chew, no problem.

maddyone Mon 08-Apr-24 23:29:00

£27,000 for an implant? My cost about £5000.
