A number of years ago I had acupuncture on my knee for osteoarthritis pain and it was successful. Recently my knees have deteriorated and I am waiting to see a consultant. In the meantime I thought I would try acupuncture again. Last time it was an NHS physio who treated me and the needles were all placed around my knee. The NHS no longer offer acupuncture for knee pain so I found a private acupuncturist. However I went yesterday for the first time and she didn't go near my knees. Needles were placed in my head, hand, back, shin and thigh. I don't understand why she didn't put needles around my knees and (stupidly) didn't like to ask. Can I ask anyone else who has had acupuncture for knee pain whereabouts the needles were inserted? Thank you

Referred pain? Possibly she was thinking about nerve points.

As far as I understand (and that isn't much) acupuncture works by enabling a better flow of chi around your body which helps in a general and in specific ways.

Maybe just around your knee wasn't enough to get the chi flowing, so she selected more general points.

I've never had it though, so I'm sure there will be others here who can explain.

I thought it had something to do with the nerve points. I had acupuncture for plantar fasciitis and the needles went into my foot, knee, hands and two on my face.
I have been recommended to use a TENS machine for an overactive bladder, the pads are placed above the ankle and just below the knee.

I have acupuncture for knee pain with my (private) physio. Needles were all inserted on and around the knee.

Thank you for replying. That reassured me a bit. Was worried she had me mixed up with another patient 😬

Hmm Thoro. Now I'm confused.
