carers after hospital discharge.

Hi aprilrose, when my mum was discharged from hospital 12 months ago we were told that she was entitled to 6 weeks free reablement care. Carers subsequently visited mum 4 times a day & when the 6 weeks expired she was financially assessed. The care package continues to this day due to the fact that her savings fell below the threshold.

You get 6 weeks free Aprilrose and lots of stuff to borrow like chair risers, bath or shower seats, toilet risers etc etc
If you need longer you the pay for it I think it’s very generous of NHS

I think it is a built-in part of the NHS process, intended to enable people to return home sooner and so ‘free up’ a hospital bed. And also recuperate more quickly.

Yes you are entitled to 6 weeks reablement free. When my DH had a stroke we didn't take them up on the washing and dressing but they came in to do an exercise programme with him. Let them start if after a week You find it more of a hindrance than a help , you may find the timings don't work for you, you can stop it but I would let them come and help with the exercise regime as you often find they will do things for others that they won't do for you. Try and contact your local Stroke association coordinators , ( number can be found on their website , and hopefully they can offer you both some support too. Try and enquire if he will get some physio after the re-ablement finishes , we found the physio really helpful for downloading to other services. We are 6 years down the line, my motto has been don't say no to any help offered its always easier to cancel things if they don't work out than try and get 're referred if you find you do want it at later date.

If you feel you need more help after the 6 weeks is up, you apply to your local social services department.

I got 6 weeks free visits just once a day which was all I needed when my H was discharged after a fall which left him very disabled.However a few months later when he had a major stroke I got no free visits as it was not considered a new case.
I paid until he needed full time care in a nursing home where he only stayed 4 months until he needed hospital admission when he died.
I did of course pay for the nursing home, even for his 4 weeks in hospital as he was considered still a resident.

Is your DH in receipt of Attendance Allowance? This is exactly what it’s designed to pay for - things that will make his life easier.

You are entitled to 6 weeks free care burt some areas don't provide this. You should have a hospital social worker who will help you claim it.

Thank you for all the replies. We have re-ablement care and apparently it is free for six weeks. It is reviewed after two weeks to see if he has enough or doesn't need as much - hubby actually asked on of the carers when he first came.

Hopefully in six weeks hubby will be walking better. He is starting to improve now.

The stroke service is a little behind. They are sending someone out next week to make an assessment it seems.
