Yes , it turned out to be caused by my shoes being too tight !
Are you nails discoloured -yellowish /greenish /blackish ?
Is there nasty debris accumulating under the nail ?
If so it could be a
fungal infection .
I hope not because they are so difficult to cure .
I find tea tree oil useful for fungal infections .
Trauma also causes it - though this will probably be more obvious to you (!) and there would be considerable pain and bleeding .

Some medications can cause loss of nails and so can psoriasis .

I think that I'd check with my GP .
I hope that it clears up .

Definitely seek advice. It’s important to understand potential causes and if it could be an indicator of an illness. See what a pharmacist says initially I think.

It’s a condition called Onycholysis - dermnetnz.org/topics/onycholysis

It can be caused by various factors, fungal, chemical, trauma etc. I don’t think a pharmacist will know the cause, you might need a dermatologist for that.

I have had it a couple of times, never knew the cause, but possibly a chemical reaction from nail polish or remover. Nails should eventually grow out normally, but that can take a few months, I’m afraid.

In the meantime, I would stop using any varnish on them in case that is the problem, and keep them cut short, to avoid catching them.

Sounds like a fungal infection - check it out with your pharmacist.

Maybe a fungal infection?
Best get it checked out.. good idea to start with pharmacy...

That sounds painful - I think I’d be seeking medical advice - perhaps from a pharmacist first.

Has anyone experienced the problem of fingernails coming away from their nail bed. I currently have this happening on three of my fingers and they are not all on the same hand. I don’t have gel put on them but they do split and flake so just wear a layer of a treatment varnish to try to improve the look of them. Just wondering what has suddenly made them go like this.
