I got a uti 6 weeks ago and since then I have been on 3 day courses of antibiotics, 7 day courses and I am now at my wits end. Just finishing a 7 day course and they said they are extending it for another 7 days (nitrofurontion) but I’ve got worse since I started it so worried it’s not working or the bug is resistant to antibiotics. Anyone else had this bother with a uti. I feel like my life is consumed by it. Any suggestions or knowledge about long-standing utis welcome.

MsBee

Thanks everyone. There are some great tips on here which I am definitely going to to try. They have taken my into hospital tonight to try and get on top of it so hopefully I will get somewhere but I am quite keen to try some of the suggestions on here. Funny how doctors have not mentioned any of these things? They sound like good options. Thank you

Sorry to read that you are in hospital flowers hope that you get some good help.
Please let us know how you get on.

I just tend to take D Mannose as soon as I feel the slightest discomfort, and continue for a few days, then stop. That seems to ‘keep it at bay’.

Obviously each person will be different.

Regarding cranberry juice, I did read that it can actually irritate the bladder because it’s acidic, so I tend to steer clear of it. Again, everyone is different.

I have just finished my fourth round of antibiotics this year to treat my uti. I haven’t heard of D Manoose,it sounds like it works. Do you take it daily like you would a vitamin or is it taken when the first symptoms appear and then how many days do you take it? I will do a google search but it would be good to hear from fellow sufferers,Thanks.

I took 1 a day as prevention and first sign of a UTI upped to 3 a day.

I drink lots of water with a lemon squeezed in it. It seems to help.

Another fan of D-Mannose.
As Sago suggested, buy some self testing strips. I always have some in the house and D-Mannose.
Drink plenty of water.
As mentioned it could be that you need vaginal oestrogen.
Hope you get better soon.

I had cystitis about 10 years ago. GP gave me antibiotics but only for three days. His advice was to pay privately for D-Manoose as it’s not available on the NHS. Haven’t had an infection since but keep buying D-Manoose to have in the medicine cupboard when the old one is out of date. Mine is Waterfall and works like magic.

Please make sure that they check out the type of bacteria causing your uti? It is not always the one they think and another antibiotic may be needed. Some good advice given by other posters.

Hi I have been through this and done a lot of reading and research. You probably need vaginal oestrogen in the form of pessary or cream. It’s very low dose so not considered a breast cancer risk. As we age oestrogen levels drop and ph in the vagina changes making it easier for ecoli to colonise and therefore cause infections . ( nothing to do with cleanliness) D mannose can help but vaginal oestrogen can be a game changer.

Ecoli causes 90% of UTI s Keeping quiet
The worry is the the UTI will become embedded

Yes but the Ecoli originates in the bowel, just saying. The female anatomy down there makes it easy to transfer bacteria from one place to another.

MsBee When you get your UTI sorted, ask your GP to prescribe a low dose vaginal HRT. I had your trouble plus a dreadful allergic reaction to anti biotics. The doctor at the hospital made me promise to ask my GP for the prescription. 3 years later not even a hint of a uti.

I think the bug is ecoli in my urine which I have read is the most common one so I thought it would clear within a week or so. Just worried if you have a strain resistant to antibiotics (is that possible?) will you have it for ever?!

Have you had your pee retested OP?

I get annoyed when Drs say it’s a UTI. This covers a number of infections particularly candida cystitis. If it is candida cystitis you must stop all sugars. That includes fruit.

Always ask for your pee to be sent for testing ....I've never had a uti that wasn't ecoli ....but I always ask for sample to be tested anyway ( and start on nitrofuantoi n anyway)

I have only one fully functioning kidney due to an enormous staghorn kidney stone that started to break up and tiny pieces worked their way through my system and caused an ecoli infection.
Unfortunately the infection spread to my liver, kidneys and appendix, this meant the stone couldn’t be surgically removed or blasted until the infection was under control.
The end result was 9 months of antibiotics/antibacterial drugs, many stents and a blocked urethra.
This led to one kidney being badly damaged.
Eventually I was clear of the infection and the offending stone was surgically removed.
I had a year of severe pain it was truly grim.

I had to take steps to try and avoid infections, the hospital were wonderful and gave me really good advice to try and avoid more UTI’s.

Firstly ecoli does not always come from the bowel, it can be carried within a kidney stone.
Caffeine will irritate the bladder always avoid if you have infection.
Cranberry juice has no proven benefits for UTI’s and can often irritate the bladder therefore exacerbating symptoms.
D-Mannose is an excellent supplement and can be as effective as Nitrofurantion for the treatment of UTI’s.
Always have some urine testing strips handy, you can buy them on Amazon.
It’s worth being able to do a quick test yourself to see if blood/protein is present before contacting a doctor.
If you have pain in the flank or rigours then this is often an indication of kidney infection or stones.

I do hope you get this sorted.

E coli comes from the bowel.

first day or SO

Waterfall D-Mannose is very good and they deliver really quickly - usually the next day. Take a high dosage for the first day or Sat, then continue with a maintenance dose. Drink lots of water too.

A UTI is a miserable thing. I had if continuously a couple of years ago. A couple of courses of Trimethoprim and lots of Cranberry juice is the answer. And I heard panti-liners can stir things as well. I don’t feel right if I don’t use pantiliners, so I try to change them at least twice a day.

Thank you for the advice everyone. I am at my wits end. The gp gives me one antibiotic for 7 days than another one for 7 days. This particular one I am taking just now is one I have had twice before for 7 days each. Just been given another 7 days but I am worse than when I started which makes me wonder if it is working?

Have they sent your urine samples to lab?
That would indicate which anti-biotic is needed
