RSV vaccine

I have been contacted by our surgery for an appointment to have the RSV vaccination. I have looked it up on Google as I had never heard of it. I can't make my mind up about it, as I shall soon be having the Covid and flu jabs, and I do worry about all these jabs. Has anyone else been contacted?

My surgery told me I would be receiving an RSV invitation shortly and I shall certainly accept.

shysal When we had ours, the nurse said we will probably have one every two years or so.

I m very nearly 80 but have been offered it, I m not at all sure.

I m having flu and eighth(I think ) Covid in a couple of weeks but I ve never had any lung problems no CoPD or asthma I don’t smoke and never had any illnesses relating to lung health
I m thinking I may not have it this time NOT for any fears or conspiracy theories though

Still trying to find a believable reason as to why people over 80 are not offered this vaccine.
There is a piece in the online Saga mag. which doesn't find any definite reason. The point is made that there is not the evidence to show how effective it would be,because over 80's are under represented in medical research . perhaps letters to M.P. might help.I cannot see how the thinking works .

Ive heard nothing about it,

I saw the same article westendgirl and came to the same conclusion. We are having our flu and Covid jabs as normal but I'm not happy to be having three vaccines at once nor run the risk of GB side effects. I am 80 next month and have decided that if it isn't effective at that I am going to give it a miss. If I had COPD or any auto immune disease then I would.

westendgirl Thu 19-Sept-24 11:47:20

Have just written to my M.#p. to ask if if he can find out . please can you support by writing to yours .

Witzend Thu 19-Sept-24 11:49:00

I missed the window the first time it was offered by GP practice. Will try not to miss again - there will be another session in the not too distant.

Good idea, I will do it now, thanks.

I am 'only' 69 but have asthma, a history of respiratory conditions and had pneumonia this year but I have not been offered it. I asked my doctor if he could refer me for it and after 'careful consideration' he decided I would not qualify for it. Anyone else in this situation?

Marydoll Thu 19-Sept-24 12:57:24

I too am 69 with multiple comorbidities, including COPD. I am also immunocompromised, so am hoping I will be offered the RSV vaccine.

I was offered the Shingles vaccine in the summer, due to my problems and am hoping the criteria will be similar.

I am 75 and have been confined to my bed after having the RSV vaccine last Thursday and catching RSV from it,

boheminan

I am 75 and have been confined to my bed after having the RSV vaccine last Thursday and catching RSV from it,

RSV vaccine cannot cause RSV because it's not a live vaccine. The vaccine contains a protein from the RSV virus, not the whole virus.

Perhaps coincidental.

Get well soon.

boheminan Thu 19-Sept-24 14:02:00

A huge coincidence? I've not had a cold like this before and hopefully never again but I won't have the vaccine if it's offered again

veejay Thu 19-Sept-24 14:07:53

Never heard of this vaccine.but too old for it anyway at 81,due for flu vaccination on 3rd of October, also offered another COVID,but not sure as last time I was asked first if I had any heart problems,so a bit worried as to why I was asked that

Marydoll Thu 19-Sept-24 15:23:17

I believe it is one off does.
Did you inform your GP of your reaction, boheminan or report it to the Yellow Card site. By doing so, it helps the research into these vaccinations.
I have had to do this a number of times, as I am very sensitive to meds and vaccinations.
However, if and when I am offered it, I will be having it.

Having read the literature, as I always do before starting new treatment, I am satisfied that the RSV vaccine cannot cause RSV, because it is NOT a live vaccine.
I am happy to listen to anyone, who can prove that this is false information.

Marydoll Thu 19-Sept-24 15:25:22

Sorry for the typos. My phone won't scroll up to correct.😊

Luckygirl3 Thu 19-Sept-24 15:32:21

I have had it.
It is a good way of protecting ourselves and our GC from this virus which can be serious in little ones.
They are now giving it to pregnant women to protect their unborn babies, but there will be vulnerable GC until this new cohort filters through.

boheminan Thu 19-Sept-24 15:41:25

Marydoll. Yes, I reported my possible reaction to Yellow Card and GP who called me and had a long chat - she didn't fob me off as imagining it/lying or that it wasn't possible. The symptoms are of RSV...BUT I do accept it could be a coincidence.

Marydoll Thu 19-Sept-24 16:45:38

Thank you for doing that. It helps to make treatment safer for all.

It is a bit of a faff, I am on nineteen meds and have multiple comorbidities. Some people would give up, because it takes so long to fill out.

I had severe reactions to two different types of biologics. The next thing, the manufacturers want access to my medical records and permission to speak to my clinicians.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

Greyduster Thu 19-Sept-24 16:59:14

I had mine a few weeks ago. No side effects that I’m aware of. Given the amount of coughing from the little ones in my one to one reading group on Tuesday, I’ll take whatever’s on offer this winter😁!

grannysyb Thu 19-Sept-24 17:14:59

Booked mine today, for next Tuesday. Really annoyed that 86 year old DH can't have it as he has a very dodgy chest due to catching farming diseases when he was young. He usually has at least one horrible chest infection in the winter, and I was hoping that this would help him. We're both having flu and covid jabs next month.

Kate1949 Thu 19-Sept-24 17:15:24

Apologies. The nurse told DH we would need the vaccine every two years. The NHS site says probably a one off.

westendgirl Thu 19-Sept-24 17:17:12

I also pointed out in my letter to the M.P. that older people did not get invitations to mammogram or bowel cancer checks.

Cadenza123 Thu 19-Sept-24 17:31:55

I don't think that I'm eligible but probably would do a lot of research before accepting it.
