Facial hair remover when over 70.

Hi all

Does anyone have any tips on getting rid of facial hair in the 70’s. I am 72 and my face would be covered with a beard and moustache if I didn’t go and get it waxed off once per month. In between I usually have to tweezer some of the hairs off. I am fed up with it and just want to get rid of them permanently but with something that isn’t too expensive. Any ideas would be helpful. Also the waxing is £20 per time and I need to save some money. Thank you for reading.

You can buy battery operated facial hair removers for under £30. Braun make a good one.

Maybe look at some reviews online. I’m sure there will be other suggestions.

I am not sure there is a quick and cheap permanent solution. I have the same problem as you Purplepixie, and I had my first coarse hairs my 20s, when i used tweezers and Veeto. Left on its own I would have a beard to rival my DH's.

Since I was 40 I have been having electrlysis. First weekly but gradually dropping to every 3 months in my 60s, but since I reached 75 it has got worse again and I now have treatment every 6 weeks. What now grows is far less and less course than when I started, but we have so many haors on our face, that as one set are killed off by electrolysis a new set grow.

I found it very painful M0nica.
I can't imagine going through that every week

I bought this recently and have been pleased with its performance so far. It's battery operated, includes a light within it (shows up white, easily missed wiry hairs!) and is small enough to fit in a make up bag or handbag.

How painful it is depends on the beautician. the first one was very gentle and it wasn't very painful. The second lady made it excriciating. My current beautician doesn't cause much pain, but I have always limited sessions to 10 minutes.

After a couple of years I was able to go less frequently and for about 15 years I was only having treatment every 3 months. Why it has got so much worse recently I am not sure, but it is only 6 weekly. now.

I had laser treatment (I think it was 8 sessions). It seemed to be brilliant at first but less than a year on I probably need at least another 8 sessions. In all fairness they did say that may be the case.

It doesn't get the white hairs. And although parts of my face are way, way better, they seems to keep appearing in different places!

I couldn't tolerate electrolysis. Laser is marginally uncomfortable for a micro second and each session is only about 5 minutes.

Despite all the industry hype I'm not sure there really is a completely permanent and satisfactory solution.

Electrolysis is the only permanent solution at present. I paid £22 per 30 minute session. Didn’t find it painful at all. Went once every 3 weeks for near enough 2 years. Only have the odd hair popping out now. Long may it last. 😀

I’ve got thick dark (well, grey) hair and have spent years using the horrible, chemical hair remover and/or painful waxing on my upper lip. Then I discovered the finishing touch flawless - it’s revolutionised my facial hair removal. Easy to use; not expensive; doesn’t irritate the skin. I would highly recommend it - think I bought mine on Amazon.

I use one daily. Takes minutes.

I got talking to a younger acquaintance the other day and realised, that she had a beard. I was so embarrassed, because I kept finding myself looking at it, because it was so obvious. I wondered if she was aware of it.
A few minutes a day would have sorted it.

I also have one with a point, for shaping eyebrows. It is brilliant!

Redhead56 Mon 02-Sept-24 20:07:01

I recommend the finishing touch flawless it's painless.

LizzieDrip Mon 02-Sept-24 20:07:01

Yes Marydoll, the flawless is great isn’t it. I was quite sceptical when I first got mine because I thought it would act like a razor and encourage hair growth - not what you want. But it really doesn’t; in fact, my top lip hair doesn’t seem to grow as much since using it. Win, win!

Two minutes with tweezers after lunch when I clean my teeth. The light is good at that time of day.

It is quick, free and effective. I simply do a few hairs at a time, it keeps everything under control.

Lucky you. That worked for me for a few years, but now I would be half the afternoon plucking hairs.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I am going to get a finishing touch gadget today. I’m sick of going to have them waxed off! I’ll save a lot of money as well.

I’m a tweezer person too although my eyesight is not what it was and I miss a few. My 4 year old grand daughter asked me why I had a dog hair growing on my chin so maybe it is time to scale up to something more efficient!

Seagull72 Tue 03-Sept-24 11:27:52

Just ordered a Flawless remover. Tweezers causing spots and some ingrown pesky hairs. Hope this works. Learn so much from Gransnet.

Hi just to add to this I have terrible white chin hair I think its a family thing. I saw an older cousin at a funeral who had a full on white beard bless her, determined not to get to that point after years of tweezers and facial creams I've taken to Epiwand its available on amazon and it seems to be doing the job! On flip side I was thinking maybe there's an opening in the circus and I could make a few quid as the bearded lady to supplement my income!grin

MissAdventure Tue 03-Sept-24 12:00:50

I need to look up this epiwand, and the flawless.

sandelf Tue 03-Sept-24 12:18:48

I use a Braun epilator - bought originally for legs, but of course will do that job wherever. A few minutes in the morning - less time and less scarring than tweezers. BUT it is not painless so if 'tweezing' is too painful, then epilation is not for you.

MissAdventure Tue 03-Sept-24 12:26:07

What is best for the wirey buggers, please?
I'd be hard pressed to call my beard "peach fuzz" blush

Namsnanny Tue 03-Sept-24 13:00:27

Clearly hormones play a part in hair growth.

Has anyone on HRT for a length of time found it makes the situation worse or better?

Gotellthebees Tue 03-Sept-24 14:14:01

Hello. Newbie here. I also use a Flawless remover. I wouldn't be without it.
