I think that anyone making the decision to terminate a pregnancy deserves understanding rather than judgement. The only person who can know if it's the right decision for a woman is the woman herself.

Since when was Melania Trump's opinion a recommendation for anything?

Funny she didn't speak up about this when she had the chance.

Yes, like when Roe v Wade was overturned 2022. It has to be a double edged sword tho, given the make up of Trump voters.

Whethertomorrow💐A difficult decision but the right one.

you do know that contraceptives,of all kinds can and do fail ?Would you expect women to carry on with a pregnancy they didn,t want but due to that contraceptive failure they had to deal with.Or do all those who disagree with abortion want to sign on the dotted line that they will provide help ,financial if needed and support for the child that would be born to a parent who had no intention of getting pregnant and it seems ,some of you think, should have no choice.
PREGNANCY is a tough road for many women who actually wanted it,please dont go backwards and force illegal backstreet abortions on those who didn;t. I thought we were better than that a pregnancy DEPENDS on the mothers body/support until it is viable around 24 weeks thats why its treated AS a part of the mothers body .All the sex education and free comdoms in the world wont stop accidental conceptions from happening

I expect Mr and Mrs Trump agreed this would be a good strategic move

Just so. A very calculated move.

Dear Whethertomorrow please don't say you are wittering . Your feelings are relevant and honorable and thank you for most helpfully sharing them.

Of course abortion as contraceptive is wrong not only in principle but also for sound practical clinical reasons. Sex education and free condoms are also needed.

Luckygirl3 Fri 04-Oct-24 14:12:12

Whethertomorrow - a trauma that has stayed with you - I am so sorry. You had no choice, that is clear. You made the right decision - a difficult one, but the right one.

I abhor the practice of treating early abortion as a means of contraception - and I am not religious. It just feels wrong in principle.

To my everlasting distress I had to have an abortion, god how I hate that word.

I was happily married and had 3 children aged 7 to 10 months. Having my last child nearly killed me so was warned not to get pregnant again. One vasectomy and condoms later I was pregnant again. GP was horrified as so was hospital consultant. Their pressure and my husband’s made my decision something I couldn’t question.

The procedure was horrendous, enema, shaving and pessary to soften cervix, all administered by a nasty vicious older nurse. First time to have a general anaesthetic as well. I was petrified and no one was kind. I nearly got up and walked out despite the life threatening risks.

I was a complete wreck, killing my baby. I was 12 weeks pregnant and I had to get up and go home to my family and pretend it was all fine.

The woman in the bed opposite was having a termination because she was going on a long holiday to Thailand and didn’t want to deal with being pregnant at the same time and had lied to doctors to get the op and was boasting about how she had fooled them. She was in her 30’s and not a young girl! I despised her to the bottom of my soul and still do.

Sometimes the need for an abortion isn’t merely because of a contraceptive choice as it were, but from a dire medical need such as mine. I’m so glad Melania has come out in support of a woman’s right to choose even though I don’t always agree with why women do it. Better to have 100 terminations than 100 neglected children.

Sorry to witter on but I’ve never really unloaded my grief around this and it’s the 37th year this month since it happened.

I agree Bluefox I worked with a woman years ago who treated it as a form of contraception and I do not agree with that. I am not religious but the nuns have left fixed ideas in my brain. They did a good job of brainwashing me.

Bluefox Fri 04-Oct-24 12:42:47

I have never understood why a baby is considered to be part of its mother’s body when it clearly is not. There are reasons for terminating a pregnancy but the whim of the mother ought not to be one of them in my opinion. I am not religious by the way.

My guess is Trump isnt opposed to abortion, whatever he may say, men like him rarely are. Many men support womens right to choose because it frequently helps them out of a difficult situation. Hes not really religious and he isnt even originally 'of the right'.

He’s simply appealing to section factions in order to gain votes! Horrific!

These people aren’t pro-life, they are simply Anita-abortion, there’s such a huge difference!

Cossy Fri 04-Oct-24 11:49:22

So she should! Some of the awful things happening in some of the “bible-bashing” states are simply appalling and pushing women backwards.

No woman should be legally barred from seeking an abortion, for any reason.

It is a rare bit of good news that Melania Trump had published in her book that she supports and always has supported women's rights to control of their own bodies, and therefore supports women's right to abortion.
