We were on holiday once and my husband's arthritic knee 'went'. We found a good, solid wooden stick in a charity shop. I used to volunteer in a charity shop and the walking sticks were kept in the back so it is worth asking.

I can offer no suggestions if you are in the US ( you say walking canes we usually refer to “walking sticks) but this shop in London, James Smith of New Oxford St is world famous for connoisseurs of all kinds of walking sticks and umbrellas.
Ordinary adjustable sticks, not wooden, are available in chemists all over.

I have actually kept DH’s in a umbrella stand by the front door along with DD’s lacrosse sticks and a couple of golf umbrellas!
I loaned a stick to a friend recently and she seems happy with it, so I hope she keeps it.

This thread has set me thinking

Mine, or rather DH’s are mainly thumb sticks or hiking sticks with tops, often horn, carved as dogs, birds, fish, etc. Maw - not real ‘walking’ sticks. They suit my current hall and DH’s friends often comment on the collection - they all have similar.
I know neither DD will want them, but they could take one each and I’ll add the rest to a load of stuff I’m gathering up to take to take to auction.

Branches of Timpsons have walking sticks, those plastic ones anyway.

Usually, good garden centres sell wooden walking sticks and thumb sticks, but I’m not sure if they are made in this country. You could try shops that sell country clothing or, as indicated on here an artisan stick maker with an online site. My son makes them in his spare time, but though they are very beautiful, it does take him an age to turn one out. A lot of hours goes into making a good one, hence the prices of some.

Our neighbour gets them in the woods where he walks his gun dogs. He always has the necessary to cut them in his pocket.

He makes some fabulous walking sticks.

If you are aiming to build up a collection, you could look at The Stick Man. He has a shop at Helmsley in North Yorkshire making and selling beautiful bespoke sticks, and an online site. DS often goes up here to buy handle blanks and have a chat with him about his craft.

LadyGracie it is seldom that DS will come back from a walk without a suitable stick or two! I have been press ganged into dragging some of them home. I tell him it’s not in my contract but always manage to let myself be sweet talked……

Rosiesmaw, my DH got a lovely wooden walking stick fom that shop, he us very happy with it.

Nordic walking poles from Nevis Sport are very good.

I use one that that is like NHS ones but brought it off disabled equipment site. But I did buy 3 wooden ones from a charity shop. A friend at the Brain Charity needed them for her sit fit exercise class for the arm exercises. When I told the lady in the shop why I needed them she wasn't going to charge me the proper price but I said no I will pay what they cost plus I wouldn't have the money of my friend as it would defeat giving to charity.

There are lots of site where you can get custom made sticks of all sorts a friend had one with the picture of her dog and cats head all over it . It wasn't cheap but it's what she wanted.

Me I am not a prod chap as my mom would say so an adjustable NHS sort suits me.
