I discovered lately that my sister, 79, had had the RSV vaccination, whereas her husband, 80, was deemed ineligible and so am I at (almost) 84. I haven't discovered the reason for this discrimination, can anyone enlighten me?

Husband and I are the right age but our surgery had one clinic a while ago but apparently no plans for another. They didn't offer us any advice so I looked online and cant find anything helpful.

As for your question anno, I can’t help I’m afraid. It’s a mystery.
I have no idea if others have had the same problem.

What is the RSV one, please?

gulligranny Tue 29-Oct-24 17:11:05

Same with my surgery Silverlining48 - one clinic only, and then nothing. A couple of weeks later I got a notification on the NHS website about this vaccination, telling me to wait until I heard from my local surgery!

You have to be 75-79. I'm not sure why. We have had ours. MissA it's something to do with preventing respiratory illness. We'd never heard of it but we got called and went.

Thanks,I just looked it up and found this.

Infants
The CDC recommends two immunizations for infants to protect them from severe RSV:
Maternal RSV vaccine: Pregnant women can receive the Pfizer Abrysvo vaccine to boost their immune system and produce antibodies that pass to the baby through the placenta.

RSV antibody: Infants can receive an RSV antibody after birth.

Adults
The CDC recommends the RSV vaccine for adults 75 and older, and adults 60–74 who are at high risk for severe RSV. Adults at high risk include those with chronic heart or lung disease, a weakened immune system, or other chronic medical conditions.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus.

I lost my long and mildly amusing response, and return to find all the info has already been helpfully provided. Yes I think it’s worth while, my arms are already stuffed with vaccinations, one more won’t hurt. 😭 . If only I can get it,

David49 Tue 29-Oct-24 17:26:58

75-79 yrs it’s the first year, limited quantities available, the aim is to expand the age group if it proves as effective as expected.
It is supposed to protect against low level winter respiratory viruses.

If youve had the Flu and Covid jabs the next best thing to do is wear a mask in crowds or shopping.

silverlining48 Tue 29-Oct-24 17:27:43

It’s probably a way of not getting lots of old people filling up hospital beds. Sensible really. If only you could get one.

MissAdventure Tue 29-Oct-24 17:29:01

Bed, or jab? smile

westendgirl Tue 29-Oct-24 17:30:42

I wrote to my MP about this (and other things)and received a copy of a letter from Parliamentary Under-secretary of state for Public Health, who says that the decision about eligibility when a new vaccination programme is introduced is based on advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation".It was decided that the greatest benefit would be gained from vaccinating 75-79 year olds.as there was currently very limited available evidence about the vaccine's efficacy for those over 80."
I did hear on a Saga piece that there were fewer over 8os in the over 80 group, therefore less evidence, but cannot vouch for that.
The JVC added that an " extension to the initial programme would be considered when there is more certainty about protection in the very elderly and the impact of the programme on 75-80 year olds "

westendgirl Tue 29-Oct-24 17:32:30

By the way I am over 80 but was quite shocked to see that I am considered "very elderly " by the great and the good .!

silverlining48 Tue 29-Oct-24 17:43:49

Either MissA either, but preferably the jab

silverlining48 Tue 29-Oct-24 17:45:43

I think there’s space in my not quite overloaded arm.

MissAdventure Tue 29-Oct-24 17:53:23

That's what I was thinking.
I had a gp appointment yesterday, and he nipped off and came back with a tray of needles, without so much as a by your leave! (2, in fact; I'm prone to exaggeration)

I wondered if one was the rsv.

Sarnia Tue 29-Oct-24 17:59:25

I was called to have my RSV as I fall into the 75-79 age category for the injection. The nurse said they were also accepting those who had just reached 80. No after effects. I was not allowed to have this injection at the same time as the Covid/flu though.

silverlining48 Tue 29-Oct-24 18:30:04

At 76 I do (somewhat reluctantly ) admit to being early /elderly, hard to face the huge jump to very elderly in only a few short years. Do we ever feel we are old? Really old?
I wear jeans, walk miles, drink gin, go to the occasional gig well ABBA Voyage (but on the dance floor…. )
Who am I kidding ?! grin

silverlining48 Tue 29-Oct-24 18:30:56

You may have had the rsv MissA. Hope so.

grandMattie Tue 29-Oct-24 18:51:04

It’s like the shingles vaccine which is only offered to people in their 70s…

MissAdventure Tue 29-Oct-24 18:59:28

silverlining48

You may have had the rsv MissA. Hope so.

I'm too young! 🤗
It was the pneumonia one I had, and flu.

My surgery doesn't do the covid one.

silverlining48 Tue 29-Oct-24 19:01:42

Ah pneumonia is a good one, lasts either 10 years or a lifetime, depending on who you talk to.
You are too young , of course. grin

MissAdventure Tue 29-Oct-24 19:08:12

A lifetime, my doc said.
Perhaps he knows something I don't. 🤔

M0nica Tue 29-Oct-24 19:44:06

DH and I, both 81, have been completely flattened for over a fortnight with a severe respiratory infection. DH has had 2 house visits and a day in a day hospital. I have read the symptoms done the research and think we have RSV, only a swab test could confirm that.

Please can over 80s qualify for the jab as soon as possible. I do not want another bug like the one we have. I am actually investigating if we can pay for the jab as we do not qualify under the NHS.

SillyNanny321 Wed 30-Oct-24 12:26:47

Had the RSV jab as I am not quite 80. Was told at the time it could make me feel faint or actually make me faint. Wish I had taken notice of that as came down the stairs from the bathroom very proud of myself not slipping & lost a couple of seconds to blackness & landed on the floor against the outer wall thinking ‘dont bash your head’! So got ‘slight’ fracture of my shoulder & lots of bruises! Wish I hadnt had the rotten jab now! Sad arent I? Just hope the wretched thing worked! Wondering if that side effect is why I couldnt have it at same time as Flu& Covid?
