Bea not long now. Soon it will be dine and you can start to recover. As for toiletries I think I was given gel to shower with for a few days before the operation but nothing for my nose. However havnt forgotten the pre op clear out 24 hours before. Suggestion is you remain within easy distance to a loo.

Bea I wonder which century your consultant was born because all of that (I will try not to be rude) was stopped in the 1970's. I suspect he is close to retirement. Carry on and pander to him as Tuesday will soon be here.

Travelsafar I agree with silverlining and on Monday, ring the consultant's secretary. So many major operations are carried out that people forget how major they are, and you are thrown out almost off the operating table.

Why not take a day off, please keep the leg elevated to try to reduce the swelling. See how you feel the next day, as you may be trying to push yourself too much.

What you use to walk does not matter if you feel safe. It will all click in eventually, and we are not in a race.

Morning Travels . Sorry to hear that things aren’t going as well as you expected.
It’s still very early but understand your concern.
I don’t know when your phone appointment is due but why not ring the hospital and speak to the consultants secretary about your concerns? Or your GP? Or 111 or a walk in urgent care unit at the hospital. Physio where I live is self referral it may be the same for you.
Take some photos if you can and send these if possible.
It’s major surgery and will take time to recover. It’s good you are mobilising even if it’s still a walking frame instead of sticks, it doesn’t matter as long as you keep doing what you are doing .
Try not to worry and keep in touch with us as there’s always someone who will try to help.

I don't feel I'm recovering so well with this 2nd HR. I still can't lift my leg high enough to go up a step, exercises are painful to do despite taking meds x 4 times daily. My leg is very swollen from top to bottom and I don't have an ankle it's so swollen.
Trying to walk three times a day any more starts pain in the hip area.
Still using a frame to get about not 2 sticks like last time. Feeling despondent and not cared for by the
Professionals. Last time I attended physio after 6 wk check up at hospital, this time check up will just be a phone call and not sure about physio.
I am feeling fearful for the future!!!!

My THR is on Tuesday…I’m day 1 using the Hibiscus body wash and nasal gel…sounds silly but did any of you receive this treatment to use for 5days pre-op as, when they say to use around hairline do I wash it off ? Keep reading the instructions but still not sure…🙏

Travelsafar I’m not at all surprised by your ankle. I woke from the sedation to see my leg being held at a 90 degree angle to my body. I know you had a new hip but I’m sure something similar could well have happened in your surgery. Once home admiring my bruises we laughed and were not surprised at seeing a full set of finger bruises round my ankle. These joint replacements are wonderful but for sure not gentle surgery.

Well done silverlining. I have a friend who lives near there and from one of her previous houses we could see France from one of the upstairs windows.

I started walking slowly increasing them as soon as I could after my hip op grammargran, it’s just this is the longest and probably the hardest we do.
We have always done the cliff walk but only part way say about 4/5 miles, but thought we would try to do the whole thing yesterday. And do we did. Still
A bit achy but not too bad. We were definitely the oldest walkers that we passed on the way.
Yes it was nice to see France sparkling away. It can be too hazy to see but yesterday was clear. Made us think about booking a small gite and returning to visit.
Surprised there were few cars going across, the port looked very quiet.

How lovely, silverlining to see the white cliffs of Calais. How I miss France. Perhaps we’ll get over there again soon, who knows! I was starting to get a tad concerned about my four month progress with my THR when I read about your 23,000 steps & seven mile walk, then I read the three years ago bit. Phew, that made me feel better!

silver lining You have done really well and are also lucky to have a really good THR that works and allows you to do what you want to do.

I cannot believe it is 17C here, warmer out than in and my washing is drying beautifully.

I did a very long walk yesterday along the white cliffs of Dover. It was 23,000 steps a bit over 7 miles perhaps, but so hilly, up and down cliffs, was exhausting but we did it.
As a bonus we saw the white cliffs of Calais shining back at us.
When we got out of the car on return I could hardly walk I was so stiff but very happy we did it. Much better this morning.
It will be 3 years in a couple of weeks since my hip hop op. Absolutely no regrets.

One thing I have a concern about is a pain in my ankle which I've never had before.

Not quite the same thing as you, travelsafar because I had a pain before I had my op, terrible, inexplicable pain down the shin of my 'bad' leg. which stopped me sleeping at night I was very disappointed when it happened after my op, but it did go within a few weeks and I have never had it since (I'm 7 months on now). I hope your ankle pain goes in the same way.

Glad you are doing ok travels and hope your ankle feels a lot better soon.

We are on page 39 so I will keep an eye on it and open our 6 th iteration of this thread as whdn or if we get to the end of the page.

The bruises are spectacular and I look like I've been in a dreadful accident. Onwards and upwards is the way to go. 😊

Your ankle would have ended up in strange places during the op, and it is not unknown for it to be suspended. It will eventually pass. After my knee surgery, I was able to have a shower immediately when I arrived home because my wound was glued together, which suited me fine.

I think you are doing remarkably well.

The pains in strange places are not unusual it seems.

Goodnesstravelsafar you’ve had a shower and a hair wash already? I had to wait over three weeks for mine! I had spectacular bruises from the top of my leg right down to my toes. The pain in your ankle may be from the pummelling your poor old leg received during the op. I had all sorts of pains down my operated leg in the early days, particularly below my knee. The worst discomfort was my swollen foot. However, you’ve been through all this before and you know that eventually it will all pass (with the emphasis on ‘eventually’). You can do it!

Have felt so much better today. My tummy actually rumbled this morning and I managed a slice of toast and a small coffee. Lunchtime I had fresh vegetables with fish pie, my first proper food for about five days. I had a shower and hairwash which felt heavenly. I've managed 3 sets of exercises throughout the day but need to do more walking. The bruises are horrendous that have started to appear today as well. One thing I have a concern about is a pain in my ankle which I've never had before. Has anyone else had this happen to them. I'm hoping as my hip heals this new pain will go too

I think you need to see your GP. OA is not usually painful at the rear of your knee. I wonder what you have done, especially as you cannot comfortably get out of a chair, but ballet is different. I would've thought that with plie, you may have fallen on the floor.

As it is in the rear, I wonder if you have a hyperextension injury, but you really need to see your GP.

So, what could it be all of a sudden when both knees ache, especially at the back, in a pulling sort of way? And at night, both feet have decided to join it, especially the instep.
I can still do the lowest pliés and rises in the ballet class, though getting up from a chair is horrible.

Well done, travelsafar, the big bit is over, now for the recovery. Don’t stint on the painkillers (but don’t forget the laxatives!!). The nausea is absolutely part of the anaesthetic, I remember it very well and lost my appetite for several days, but like everything, it passes. Good luck, we’re all here for you!
