Welcome to the latest Hips and Knees where help advice support and encouragement is readily available to all

*Silver lining:" I would eat spag bol, curried mince, shepherd's pie, macaroni cheese, fish pie, scrambled eggs, and cheese omelettes. Obviously, mix them up so you are not dining on mince 3 meals on the trot.

Have you tried googling? You may find the odd edible dish that does not take long to prepare.

Had my THR on Monday which has left me reeling! First major op in 85 years, I’m feeling battered and bruised. However, being well looked after by DH and on hand daughters so all well during the day, but please, any tips on how to get comfortable in bed at night? I’m no back sleeper and am aching to get on to my side which I think is now allowed but my operated leg just won’t co-operate. My foot and heel are particularly uncomfortable with my heel feeling the pressure. I just long for a good night’s sleep - or is that expecting too much at this stage? Best wishes to everyone else going through TH and KRs.

I have had two THR’s and one reverse shoulder replacement, now waiting to be referred regarding left knee! I am not a back sleeper but had to adapt. Getting up from a lying down position was hard and painful so I had at least four pillows propping me up and basically slept sitting up. If heals are uncomfortable try putting pillow under them. Good luck with your recovery, keep moving as much as possible without overdoing it. I ended up with cellulitis the last time because I didn’t rest enough and had to go on antibiotics. My paramedic daughter confined me to bed until meds were finished and said I could only get up to use bathroom and to prepare dinner, unfortunately my husband can’t cook and finds the kitchen a no go area!!

Not too bad thanks grammaretto. It’s slow and steady.

Grammaretto Thu 16-Jan-25 09:39:59

I agree about ready meals Silverlining but sometimes needs must and the Sainsbury pasta was tasty. A Lidl pasta ready meal was not nice.
I made a big soup at the weekend too.

How are you today?

silverlining48 Thu 16-Jan-25 09:34:21

We had home made shepherds pie last night which wasn’t too bad and was thinking about fish tonight. Great minds Nannytopsy.
Not keen on ready meals grammaretto, but thanks pasta is a possibility, as long as it’s not al dente.
It’s really awkward.

Nannytopsy Thu 16-Jan-25 08:57:43

Fish pie or shepherds’ pie are soft?

Grammaretto Wed 15-Jan-25 19:56:41

How long since your op Redcar?
You are doing well.
I have been doing the exercises just not as many or as often as I should.

I walked, with stick carefully, to yarn group this morning. It was great to catch up with the group again. They all seemed impressed with my progress.

Soft food Silverlining 😋 I find that easy at this time of year.
A red cabbage is looking reproachfully at me but I just don't fancy it.
Tonight I had a ready meal, cannelloni from Sainsbury. Pretty soft.
I have put pillows under my mattress as per your advice.
It may help reduce the swelling in my thigh.

grammargran Wed 15-Jan-25 18:55:32

I can’t stride out for all that long, Redcar, certainly not for half-an-hour, and I don’t have your extra problems, so you’re probably doing just as well, if not better!

silverlining48 Wed 15-Jan-25 18:03:37

Soft food is a nightmare. suggestions most welcome,

Redcar Wed 15-Jan-25 17:44:26

silverlining glad you’re ok, but soft food is a bit restricting isn’t it. Take care eating & cleaning your teeth, hope the pain eases soon. Certainly not warm enough to sit out here in Essex, and I put the heating on this afternoon because I was cold. I’ve got a long sleeved blouse on with a long sleeved jumper on top of it!
grammargran you’re doing really well. I’m not using crutches indoors, but still use both to walk outside, just to hold my back up. I can walk for about half an hour outside with the crutches but would probably only manage about 5 minutes without them!

grammargran Wed 15-Jan-25 15:28:26

Silverlining48 I’m in Gloucestershire - 10 degrees. Redcar was wondering how you were doing. I’m feeling quite optimistic these days, too, almost striding out with the stick, still very wimpy without, but I know now not to push that side of things. I also know that the exercises are a definite means to an end so they’re not so much of a chore as they were. Still can’t stand for any length of time but am certainly sleeping much better than a few weeks ago as I can turn over onto either side.

silverlining48 Wed 15-Jan-25 15:22:18

Red car luckily I had a general anaesthetic. I am ok but jaw quite stiff and a bit painful. I have to be v. careful eating and cleaning my teeth etc.
good to hear how you are all progressing, well done.

Redcar Wed 15-Jan-25 14:40:09

silverlining I had to look it up too, but it sounds potentially quite painful. I hope you’re feeling better today.
grammargran no sun here today, cloudy and about 9 degrees. I’ve been for a walk this morning and done one lot of exercises both for the hip and my back. I feel that I’m at last making progress with my hip, looking back at the things I can now do, that I couldn’t do a few weeks ago. I’m even able to lie on my side (operated side) for a short while. Some more exercises beckon!

silverlining48 Wed 15-Jan-25 14:32:21

Thanks Grammargran. Apparently it’s not uncommon though I had never heard if it either. Having to eat soft food for 2 weeks and running out of ideas already.
I don’t know where you are but I have the heating on and have just put a fleece on top of my thick jumper and tee shirt underneath, and am still cold, brrr

grammargran Wed 15-Jan-25 14:28:34

Glad you came through your op OK silverlining48 although it doesn’t sound pleasant (had to look it up!). Nannytopsy make the most of the time of year and hibernate. That said, it’s almost springlike in my neck of the woods today - it was lovely to sit in the garden and soak up a bit of sun. And now …. back to the exercises!

Charleygirl5 Wed 15-Jan-25 11:50:24

Nannytopsy ditto here.

Slowly but surely you are getting there.

Nannytopsy Tue 14-Jan-25 14:48:43

It was more comfortable but the physio told me not to do the pillows, so I am being good. We have a very deep heavy mattress - I think the pillows would just get flattened!

Charleygirl5 Tue 14-Jan-25 14:33:24

Nannytopsy I am delighted to hear you are behaving. You obviously need the rest so enjoy it without a guilty conscience.

Can you fit two pillows under your mattress to elevate the leg at night?

Although it is much more comfortable, it is inadvisable to put your leg directly onto the pillows because they can cause deep vein thrombosis.

Nannytopsy Tue 14-Jan-25 14:20:47

You must be very special silverlining48 if none of the grans have heard of it! Best wishes for your recovery.
I have been walking a bit and doing the exercises and taking the tablets as necessary. As a result I am very sleepy! It was past 11 when I got down to breakfast and now I have just woken from a nap!
My knee is a bit swollen, so out with the ice packs and elevation again.

Grammaretto Tue 14-Jan-25 13:14:40

That must be such a relief to have it over with Silverlining.
I hope you continue to make a good recovery.

Aveline Tue 14-Jan-25 11:40:44

That sounds like a very scary procedure silverling48. I bet you're glad it's over and all seems OK. Hope you're feeling great this morning.

Charleygirl5 Tue 14-Jan-25 11:28:19

Sorry silverlining I have never heard of that word, which is unusual considering my background.

I hope the recent surgery is not too painful. Enjoy the rest.

silverlining48 Tue 14-Jan-25 11:12:05

I got home last evening so went to bed early after having a small bowl of home made whizzed lentil soup.
Thanks for asking grammargran.
Feeling ok, but have to be careful. Best of all my hearing hasn’t been affected so far at least, as the jaw op was very close to my only good ear. My other ear is almost completely deaf so was concerned that I keep what I have in the left ear. Apparently it was more complicated than they expected.
I did a thread on here asking about arthrocentesis but got no response. I had hoped someone else would have had or heard of it.

Charleygirl5 Mon 13-Jan-25 22:32:17

Grammaretto I would accept the physio as it is being offered. I assume there will be a waiting list.

Grammaretto Mon 13-Jan-25 22:24:38

Sorry to hear susytish and flur that you are suffering.
I hope once the weather improves, you will too.
My leg is swollen again tonight but I was phoned by the hospital today - 2 weeks on- and was told my symptoms are pretty normal.
The nurse also told me she can arrange physio for me. 😃

So I shall stop grumbling about the NHS.
