I would imagine you have grade 4 osteoarthritis, which is bone grating on bone. That is not going to improve.

Most but not all hips are done with robotic assisted surgery.

I have a date for my TKR! Since mid September I have lost 1st 11lbs and now can go to the orthopaedic hub.
The bad news? It’s on Christmas Eve. You couldn’t make it up!

My hip joint was in such a bad state my leg was half an inch shorter than my ‘good’ leg. My consultant said he would try to put this right and he has. I had the operation 9 weeks ago, didn’t even need a stick after 5 weeks and not only has the pain gone but I walk better as both legs are now the same length. Go for it!

Which one Aveline ? Mine will be at a Spire (in Sheffield ) but contracted to NHS. No one’s mentioned a robotic arm or CT scan though …

Far better for all your other joints to have the extra strain of this bad hip to be removed. My op was at a Spire hospital.

marymary my right leg was one centimetre shorter than my left leg when I had the right hip replaced last December. I had put the operation off until I could hardly walk because of the pain. The consultant managed to increase the right leg length a little and I didn’t notice the difference in length after the operation. I also have osteoporosis in my spine and the pain decreased after the hip op. I have just had the left hip replaced (4 weeks ago) and I am getting about quite well on one crutch. The hip aches quite a lot, probably because I am expecting a quicker recovery and so am doing too much.
I’m sure you won’t regret having the operation.

Just get it done. I had my right hip replaced last year, no leg length difference . Neither have 3 friends who have had replacements.

I kept being told I didn’t need my hip doing , even though I needed a stick at all times and really was in pain
Mind you I didn’t argue as I was afraid of surgery
However I brave in and got it done ( my daughter was pushing behind my back ) I couldn’t believe the difference after !
,
But , by then my back was b…..d !
For a few years I couldn’t believe how well I manage with no aids , now I use a rollator with a seat so I can catch my breath , if I had given in and pushed for it my back would not be as it is ,
So MaryMary please think on and get your new hip

I never felt any leg discrepancy. I had the robot assisted op so had a CT scan first to get all the measurements exactly.

Mary Mary hello. My advice is to seize the opportunity and go ahead with the hip hop op. It will make so much difference, you will be painless almost immediately
As for steroid injections I was offered and accepted a guided hip injection prior to surgery, which was ok for the first couple of days, but then my pain trebled and I ended up with necrosis.
Obviously was unlucky but fir ne I woukdnt repeat.
I was a fairly fit and healthy 74. Recovery was quick and I was back walking miles a couple of months later.
As for leg discrepancy I did feel a difference post op but was told it Woukd resolve and it did.

For goodness sake seize the opportunity for a pain free life which also helps your other conditions! Absolutely no reason to put it off.

Hello everyone, looking for some combined wisdom. Has anyone put off a hip op and regretted it or, conversely, regretted getting one ? I’m an active 69, have had hip o/a for a decade which I’ve managed well and kept strong and flexible but last few years more stiff and painful and I’m doing less despite physio and painkillers. I have spinal osteoporosis so really need to be active. My GP and consultant are keen for me to have my hip op , on the grounds of pain , while I am relatively young and fit as they say I will recover well and get a lot of benefit now - improve spinal strength heart etc . Consultant is not keen on a steroid injection as he feels they actually carry a high risk of infection in themselves though I know they can be helpful as a temporary solution . I laughed at the description of slim in an earlier post - my GP described me as “lean’ which somehow is less flattering ! Do I carry on and grin and bear it or seize this opportunity ? I’ve put the decision off for as long as I can - op is booked for Jan 30’th - if I cancel it’s back down the waiting list ( sounds like snakes and ladders 😂)

Though, what the surgeon puts in you must weigh about the same as what they take out. So how would you know any different😉

I weigh the same now as I did before the operation. Consultant referred to me as a slim lady in a letter to my doctor! My comment to my daughter was that he should have gone to Specsavers! I’m not slim, and never have been.
I do think it’s cruel to deny people possibly life changing surgery because they weigh too much. Exercising is not always easy, especially when it hurts.
grammargran I was 76 when I had my first hip replacement operation and that was the first operation I’d ever had. 77 when I had the second hip done and possibly not as fit this time round. Things are getting easier now though, I hope you’ll find that too.
