silverlining it is very noisy and you do not want to hear a hammer, electric saw or chisel grinding or hammering away. You would also hear music and the surgeons voices.

I imagine it’s quite a noisy operation topsy so not to hear any of it was just as well.

Parksey I had a TKR with a spinal
Block and very light sedation 8 weeks ago. I was awake and chatting with the anaesthetist and the theatre nurse. However, I may st have dozed too because I didn’t hear any of the operation. I’m hoping for a new hip soon and will hopefully have the same anaesthesia. Don’t worry.

I’m so thrilled with my first THR that I wouldn’t be worried at all about having a second one if I needed it. Though I am hoping that the other hip will see me out, as I couldn’t bear to go through the arthritis pain and loss of movement again.

Parsley you definitely won’t be awake. You will see hear or feel nothing.

parksey please don’t worry about having a spinal block, the recovery time is generally quicker than a general anaesthetic. You should be offered sedation, if not, ask for it. There are different levels of sedation, you can be completely asleep, or just half asleep where you can hear what’s going on. During my first hip replacement I could hear noises, opened my eyes & was immediately given more sedation. I came to on my way out of theatre. After a period in recovery I was taken back to my room and had coffee and toast. Out of bed and in a chair later the same day.

Parksey I had to be talked into having one when I had my last knee replaced. I have never had any problems after a GA, but reluctantly, I agreed to this. The next thing I knew, I was in Recovery, fit as a flea and, more importantly, heard nothing.

Late to the party again because GN doesn’t keep to its promise to notify when others post. travelsafar best of luck with your surgery, sounds as though everything is falling into place. Parksey, for my THR 15 weeks ago tomorrow, I had a couple of spinal injections and a mild sedative (into the back of my hand, I think) and the next thing I knew was waking up in Recovery a couple of hours later. It’s quite scary not being able to feel/move your legs or toes for a short time afterwards but it soon passes. In fact, everything passes given time, just remember to do the exercises and be a patient patient - the latter is the hardest by far! Best of luck anyway, you’ll be recovering all through the summer, not the dark grey winter months like some of us ….

I requested a spinal anaesthetic for a TKR, the surgeon laughed saying he usually had to talk patients into it. In his opinion it’s better for the patient and recovery is quicker. Given sedation with the spinal I recall not a thing until the operation was over. No nausea afterwards, within an hour I was back in my bed eating a sandwich and enjoying a cup of tea. Please don’t worry parksey, if you’ve a contact number why not phone, explain you are nervous and check that sedation will be offered or if it’s still to come you could check at your pre op appointment. The staff will understand.

I am having a hip replacement in may this year. It sounds like I will be awake! I am very worried about this, can I insist on a general anaesthetic? Can anybody reassure me on staying awake? Thanks for any support or advice.

My THR was rather short notice too and I had to cancel my NY plans to travel south but no matter. I'm now about 8 weeks post op and almost back to normal better than before

Typo error 13th not 23rd

I got a call on Thursday asking if I'd take a cancellation for hip replacement I jumped .... not literally....at the chance. Am booked for the 23th March, thankfully not a Friday 😊 pre op 1st March which is lucky as I am away until the Friday evening on a short trip to Devon with 5 friends. It's gonna be busy leading up to the op as I have opticians appt to get new glasses sorted after a recent cataract op, my car is due for its MOT and service and it's my youngest sons 40th!!! I feel so fortunate the hr op is the date it is as I can fit everything else in before hand. Also my sister starts 2 weeks annual leave the 14th so will be around to help me. Some one up there loves me🙏. This is my 2nd replacement so feeling nervous as I know what is coming. Fingers crossed it will go well as the other one did. Wish me luck please.

If they are seen on x-ray, they will be removed, but no harm in reminding.

Why not ask if you could have an earlier pre-op appointment? Believe it or not, some people prefer a holiday to life-changing surgery. For other reasons, people may cancel.

I agree—keep ringing weekly. So what if it reaches the stage where the secretary thinks, "Oh, that pesky woman again?" I will squeeze her in there, and my life will be simpler.

I had similar with a shoulder and part of the surgery involved removing the osteophytes Sealover. Ask if that will be done.

Hello Sealover sorry to hear you are in such pain. I hope you can get some medical advice or someone here can help. You probably need stringer painkillers, but be careful of cocodamol as it can bring on constipation very quickly.

As for ringing about a cancellation I would mark in your diary to contact them every week or two just in case, but if your pre op isn’t til May doubt you Woukd be given an earlier date.
Certainly worth phoning after though.

I had necrosis in my hip. No one on here had experienced it so I was very worried before the operation but it was ok in the end. The consultant said it was all in the bin and imagine your bony bits will be in a bin too.

Hi again, sorry to keep asking questions, just wandering if any of you had had these pesky osteophytes (bony growths) on your hip joint prior to replacement? They press on nerves causing a lot of pain. Pain relief prescribed hasn't helped much and I'm waiting for my regular GP to return from leave to see him. I feel as though I'm dragging my leg behind all the time. Phone call to hospital re cancellation not very fruitful, certainly not until after the pre op on May 7th. Am so hoping that after the op this nerve pain will go, am I being too hopeful?

Delighted to hear your washing machine has been repaired. I could not live without mine.

It is the only excuse I can think of at present. I thought spring had arrived but tomorrow's T is back to 5C.

A bit of a lazy day today, loading then hanging washing from the freshly repaired machine, and resting.

At least it is warmer, even if you are feeling under the weather. (*Silverlining*.) I have been looking at the hoover, but if I do not use it, I will be saving electricity. That is my excuse.

I am a little better thanks, but still doing multiple sneezing.
I have just folded the dry washing and put it away and feel whacked out now. Here’s to a better day tomorrow.
