Is it safe to take Senacot once a fortnight?

Or am I setting myself up for trouble ahead? I just find that after a really good clear out my digestive issues settle. I think I may have diverticulitis or maybe even Crohn's or UC. Who knows. Needs investigating. Had on off fluctuating bowel symptoms for years. Lots of investigation no findings.

But in the last two years my abdomen has slightly sharp pain when pressing close to my right ovary /appendix.

After senacot I feel ok for a while.

Fibogel (?spelling)) is a bulker not a softener. Ask the doctor to diagnose your symptoms. I was recommended a softener (Macrogol) years and years ago and have taken it daily for years. It works well together with plenty fluid and apples with peel and so on.

Fybrogel works by bulking the poo with liquid.
According to the NHS website.

Have you still got your appendix ?
Is it grumbling ?
Rare as we get older , but it can happen .

There are so many reasons for right sided pain - could be anything and it needs investigation .

I don't like Sennokot and prefer Dulcolax suppositories for constipation .
Several members of my family need assistance with emptying their bowels and we've tried all the available meds .
Massaging your abdomen in a warm bath and just going for a walk can help as well .

I have the opposite problem !

MissAdventure Sat 04-Jan-25 16:01:21

Yes, sometimes my mishaps are amusing.
I told someone I couldn't keep texting because my 'fongers' were playing up.

Definitely see your doctor

Have you tried taking fermented foods to aid your gut biom?
I’m now making kombucha and have some every day. It’s really easy and cheap to make st home ( instead of £3.50 for a tiny bottle on a shop) . Otherwise eat some sauerkraut or kimchi. Also up your consumption of vegetables and fruit and eat a bit less protein. Diet can really affect health. But don’t just do that without a medical diagnosis.

As it turned out, I didn't have an ulcer; I had a large hiatus hernia, so at least I know what I'm dealing with when it flares up.

RillaofIngleside Sat 04-Jan-25 15:35:29

That's what I was trying to illustrate! Best to get it checked out properly by a medical professional and follow their advice as to scans or colonoscopy. Taking over the counter drugs may be masking something that needs treating.

MissAdventure Sat 04-Jan-25 15:21:10

My first gp told me that omeprazole working for my indigation proved that I had an ulcer.

The next one told me bluntly that if I had cancer and he gave me omeprazole, it would work, too, on indigestion caused by it.

MissInterpreted Sat 04-Jan-25 15:17:32

Totally agree with that, MissAdventure. There could be any number of reasons behind the OP's symptoms, so getting proper medical advice is definitely the first step. Treating what you 'think' it may be could easily make the problem worse.

MissAdventure Sat 04-Jan-25 15:16:47

Oops. Magic pressional. blush
Health professional.

MissAdventure Sat 04-Jan-25 15:15:46

The whole point is, that it's not "safe" to take anything without some input from a magical pressional as to why you need it.

At best, in this case, it would be guesswork, even from a gp, unless he' has xray vision.

The digestive system consists of lots of different parts, so best to find put what part is giving the problem.

However, she knew where they were from a colonoscopy. They were on the other side.

My post was intended as general advice re diverticular disease. It's a common misconception that DD pain is always left-sided, when that's not always the case.

RillaofIngleside Sat 04-Jan-25 15:01:41

I have had one recently, the thought is worse than the reality! The prep is the most demanding to part, but not too bad. I hope you get sorted out.

RillaofIngleside Sat 04-Jan-25 14:59:42

The colonoscopy is a very useful exam and can identify many problems, in your situation I would have thought it was essential.

RillaofIngleside Sat 04-Jan-25 14:58:07

She did not have diverticulitis and never had.

My friend had an undiagnosed grumbling appendix for years (GP said diverticulitis even though it was on the wrong side!). She nearly died when she was rushed in as an emergency .Just a thought.

Actually, you can have diverticulitis on either side, although it is more common on the left. The pouches caused by diverticular disease can be found throughout the large intestine.

Greciangirl Sat 04-Jan-25 14:24:08

Galton.

Is a colonography a scan. Is that the same thing.?
I have requested a scan instead of a colonoscopy as I’m anxious but they refused saying it’s better to have the colonoscopy.

Hi sounds like ibs.. I get the same off and on.
Pain same as you lower belly pain.. Then constipation.
Once I go to the loo I'm fine.
I take dulcolax liquid form. Don't take too much though.
I take 7 and half ml 3 times a week. At night
If I'm really bad take 10ml.
Only one a week.
The Dr's say this is OK.
Hope you get to the bottom of it.. Get it bottom haha

I have diverticulosis and have had it for years. Definitely ring 111 if you cannot get an appointment, they are very good and will help you get to see someone. Doctor needs to have a prod around your old tum. Diverticulitis when it strikes is usually more prevalent down the left hand side of the bowel and not the right. It may just be a case of an infection and they can and I have had a course of very strong antibiotics, so strong that you are banned for 14 days from having any alcoholic drink. Not even a drop is allowed otherwise you would end up in hospital and very ill. Best to get this sorted. Worrying about it is far worse as I found out. I even failed my colonoscopy but all was not lost I then was sent for a colonography , which is like a huge polo mint they put you through and believe me is a doddle. My wish for you in 2025 is to get better. You can live with diverticulosis it isnt easy at times , in fact it is a b nuisance but we cope.

All my love.

My GP recommended Lactulose, a reflux medication I take causes constipation.

icanhandthemback Sat 04-Jan-25 13:26:50

I second Caleo's treatment. It makes such a difference to my life. I have IBS and Diverticulitis which aren't cured by it but certainly assist.
